H, Mz Marz! I've been thinking about you and the tiels off and on all weekend. I know you don't have a computer on the weekend, but hopefully you'll give us an update when you get to work tomorrow! I really love your pictures ... I particularly love the one of Sidney (Daddy) peaking out of the nesting box! If anyone hasn't seen the pictures Mz Marz put in her album a couple of days ago, are here: So sweet! Abby |

I have never seen a crop that huge. It seems to sag down too far. I wonder if he needs a crop bra? Do they allow it to empty before they refill him? Cute cute pics. Annie |

I don't know if they allow it to empty all the way - when they're closed in the cage, one parent is usually in there - always seems like bb has food in the crop - bb doesn't seem sick - I haven't seen it close to empty for awhile. I made sure over the long wkend to hang onto bb for awhile to let him digest what's in the crop - but like I said, its usually full.
Well, I'm ready to go home for the day - I hope its eyes are open! |

I've also kept an eye to see if there is any air in there...if there is, I get bb to open mouth and ease the air bubble up so he can burp! |

sad news. i opened the box this morning and baby was not alive. i don't know what went wrong. it was getting so big and i thought everything was ok. the only thing i can think of is that maybe with one baby, the parents kept feeding it and feeding it, and maybe like annieokie's comment about letting crop empty was a good one. maybe they didn't let it empty out...maybe sour crop. i don't know. it seemed to be progressing fine - bb was OK when i put it in box last nite, and sometime during the nite something went wrong. momma was in box with baby this morning. |

I'm so sorry that you lost your little baby bird. Especially so suddenly, without warning. I've lost a number of baby tiels in the first couple of weeks for unknown reasons. It is probably nothing the parents or you did or didn't do. I have a feeling that Mom and Dad will be trying again shortly, and will have even better luck next time. When cockatiels get the idea of being parents, they keep trying. It is hard for us to lose the babies, but the parents seem to take it in stride. Kathy |

I am so sad for you. Your excitement over this little guy was wonderful to see. I think that with only having one baby they did overfeed and that's probably what caused his death. His crop looked the size of two full crops to me. Tiels are notorious for being excellent feeders. Maybe if they do this again there will be more babies so the feedings will be more normal. Blessings. Annie |

Oh Ms Marz I am so sorry.. I came looking to see if you had posted more pics... Being first time parents, bird sometimes don't get it right but the one thing you do know is they will make great parents with the next clutch.. Erika what did you think about the idea of having only the one to feed and it being overfed? Sour crop I doubt that and as everyone says... there's too mnay things that could have contributed to it's passing away... I am sad though to read about it... (((((((((((((((hugs)))))))))))) |

I think it is quite likely a large contributing factor, that the parents were over-zealous in feeding. I don't think sour crop though. As Mz Marz said in message 24, she kept the baby out 'to let him digest what's in the crop'- I'm assuming that the crop emptied or nearly so. If it had sour crop, it would have been very slow to empty and I've heard there is an odor... of this I'm not sure as I have been very fortunate to never have had any problems with my tiels. I can't help but wonder thou if there was something else going on as well though. It seemed a bit odd that the eyes were not open yet. My baby tiels eyes have always started to open by a week old and usually fully open by 10 days. I could be normal for some to open later. Maybe mine open theirs early? |
