This is a guess as diagnosing someone else bird sight unseen isn't always wise but it sounds very normal when they are hormonal and what you have to deal with is not so much the rubbing (it won't make him raw) but to change his environment...

And you could give him a stuffed toy. Does he have anything as a favourite such as a towel or another soft article that he is fond of? A toy is probably the best bet and attached close to the perch he uses.

Then the daylight hours needs to be adjusted, that is less daylight time including indoor lights and his diet should be adjusted with less proteins... If he gets vitamin supplements hold off with those till he gets through this stage and it is a stage ... nature kicking in .... unfortunately it happens quite a few times a year.

I am surprised that this hasn't happened long before now considering he is eight years old...

If for some reasin you are finding it difficult to get material on the web about hormones and the effects on our birds we will be glad to assist you further...

It is quite normal for male cockatiels to do this. Just as in people it is called masturbation. He will be like this maybe 3 weeks and then settle down for a while.
One of our members gives her bird a stuffed sock and has replacements available so they can be cleaned often.
The private area is called his vent.
It does bother us but we have to get used to it because he will do it a lot once he has begun.
My cockatiel chirped loudly the entire time he did that.

I refer to Cockatiels as the "rabbits" (or "cats") of the bird world, lol. When hormonal, they can be bad, but it will pass. Because of hormones, I keep all but the 2 bonded pair seperated not only in seperate cages, but seperate rooms. If I don't, the males whistle and display constantly to try and draw the girls' attention to the point where they lose weight (too busy acting silly to eat), and I'm ready to figure out how to make birdie gags. It isn't just the boys either. My girls are bad about "advertising" fo a male.  They put their tails up, squat down with wigns slightly raised and chirp away while they back up to their hanging toys .
As for an 8 yo 'tiel being "too old", he is just in his prime. Sonny & Pearl, one of my tiels pairs, are about 12 & 13 now if the age I was given 4 years ago (8 & 9) is accurate and have been breeding a few times a day (that I know of) for the last 2 weeks.
I also have "Smoke", a normal grey male who is 19 or 20 according to the previous owner.

What do you stuff the sock with paper?  I was worried about this behaviour too and was wondering if it's cruel for him not to have a partner though I don't have time to care for baby tiels.  I have two budgies but they just tolerate one another not friends.

Kooky, just fold the top part of the sock into the foot. Uhhh. Slide the upper part down inside the foot. Gee, that's hard to drescribe.
You could stuff it with polyester fiberfill or with quilter's cotton but if he tears the sock up the filler will make a mess.
I'd just fold it myself.
If you have a knee high sock, tie it around his perch in a knot. Easy to put in and take away. Very easy to wash, too.

I had a love bird that use to do that constantley I gave him a rolled up pair of socks  because he would rub himself raw and pluck all the feathers in that area  but after igave him the socks he was better I just use old odd socks and rolled 2 together I would have to change them on a daily basis because he would regurgitate on them trying to feed them but they are easy to throw in the wash Pat

I buy cheap ( cheep?) socks in the Dollar Store for Jack Bird. He cuddles it unless it 's hormone season. I feel like I should cover the cage. Emms and I agree Jack would make a terrible husband. He'll cuddle the sock for a while then beat the ever loving cheese out of. the next thing you know he's whispering to it. Is there an anger management for Lories?? Nan

LOL.  He didn't seem interested in the sock I put out but maybe it was too big so I'll try just rolling the one sock into itself.  Thanks.  Birds sure are funny.
