Hi all...

I just got a cockatiel from a family that didn't have any time for him. I've had a cockatiel before but it was hand fed and VERY tame. This one is just down right mean. He acts like he wants attention but as soon as you get near the cage, he hisses and tries to bite. (He's gotten me a couple times, too)
He's such a delight when we're not right at his cage....whistling and talking up a storm. Any suggestions on how I go about training him to trust us....me especially?

Thanks so much!
Sondra

Sondra,
Congratulations on your new feathered friend!
Patience is required with any bird and especially one that has been rehomed.  Poor thing doesn't know who to trust.  If you have patience - you will eventually have a true companion.
He.....like a lot of birds may be territorial over his (home) cage.  Interaction outside of this environment sounds like a great idea!
Regarding the biting - perhaps letting him come out on his own for awhile will save your bandaids!   Or try using a small perch until he gets used to you.
Good luck!!
Crystal

He isn't mean, he's afraid.  Imagine if you were removed from the life you knew and placed in a small cage in the jungle, with people looking in at you, speaking a strange language.  You would be wondering when you were going to be "dinner".

If he's whistling and acting happy when you aren't near him, just give him time to watch you and begin feeling safe in your environment.  Yes, it takes patience, and sometimes LOTS of it.  But if he never becomes comfortable with being handled, just accept that too.  There's nothing in the birdy rule book that says every bird must enjoy being held.

I have a female that was recued out of a pet store that was in a cage with to many others. The kids got her for me for a mothers day gift. She was scared and I waited a month to get her use to me. Its almost 3 years later and she still doesnt want to be handled. But she is just a joy to have around and to watch romp about with the other 2 I have.

We "share" our home with Buzzy - the tiel.  He's nearing 11 years old, handraised by me, and most folks see him as the "sweetest little guy"!  Or as Etta put it awhile back - "he's full of himself"!  LOL....however, he has a dark side.  He didn't get his nickname BUZZY BUTTHEAD for nothing......and I have the V marks to prove it.
Patience, patience, patience, patience, patience...
Crystal

Thanks so much, everyone. Patience it is, then. =)
I haven't let him out of the cage yet because I'm afraid I won't be able to get him back in. I may try this weekend.

Love the name Buzzy Butthead! LOL

I know we should be ashamed our ourselves giving our cute little bird that name... even though he's lived up to it to many times to count.  Sadly - he's been referred to by it so often, he now beats you to the punch!  Walk into any room he's in and you'll be greeted by that squawky little voice...."HI BUZZY BUTTHEAD".

Buzzy's on the left.....with friend, Pippen!  (One of Goodbirds little guys!)
