I have 2 white faced cockatiels, about 2 years old but not sure as they were a rescue. Mating has been going on since February. Only recently did eggs start appearing. First on the 24th, then the 26th, and yesterday. I know they lay every other day. I've had birds all my life, but never did I have a pair breed. The female started laying on them yesterday but she seemed too pre occupied with shredding the box and rolling the eggs out of it. (they had a breeding box, but rolled the eggs around in there also.) Now she's not going near them. I'm not sure as to whether it's their first clutch together or not, like I said they were a rescue. I was actually told by my vet to euthanize them when I got them back in November, but I wanted to give them a fighting chance and now they're great birds! Is there anything I can do to see that she's comfortable laying on the eggs??

I'm not sure what the answer is but if it were me  I would leave well enough alone... Let her roll them around, she may or may not sit on them but just leave the eggs there for the pair to do as they see fit...

Eventually you will know when to remove them as there will be no interest shown...I have so many questions I'd like to ask only the object of the post was you wanting to know how to make it comfortable for her... It seems since you have offered a "box" she is interested in making her own nest... Looks like she wants to "do it alone."

What sweethearts.  Thank you for rescuing them and giving them a fighting chance.

Both clutches of Cockatiel babies at this house came in a disposable Glad container with some of that paper bedding for hamsters.    She sat on eggs in a nest one time and abandoned them a few days before they should have hatched so I never went the nest route again.

Your setup looks good.  She might like some loose paper to settle on, though.

Good luck!

Hi Beth.
They are pretty! Why on earth did the vet think they should be euthanized?? I think I'd be shopping for a new vet. Were you able to get any background info. on them besides estimated age?
Jack looks like a Cinnamon Pied White Face, and Diane looks like a Grey Pearl-Pied White Face. Do I have it correct? Sometimes in pictures it is hard to tell. Either way they should have some pretty babies as long as they aren't related.
Some tiels don't start sitting their eggs tight until they are done laying, some start setting right away. They could be inexperienced. Often the first clutch is unsuccessfull, so don't be surprised.
As far as the nest, I'd try to get a more closed in box filled at least 1/3 with all natural shredded  aspen (prefered) or clean pine bedding. My birds seem to do well with that. Do NOT get cedar or the pine bedding with the green chlorophyll treated chips as they can be toxic to birds. Shredded paper is usually too light and the eggs sink to the bottom and become covered. I have never tried the paper hamster bedding so I can't comment on that.
If you have any other questions, feel free to ask.

Well, here's an update!  5th egg was laid this morning and the parents have moved into their wooden nest box with pine shavings!  Here's a picture of them nesting.  I think it's sweet that when momma goes to get some food or a drink, papa is close by and goes with the eggs.
