I was curious what different types of things people use for the bottoms of their cages with their tiels?
I have just recently started to use newspaper and wondered if this is safe for the tiels.
I havne't noticed them eating at the paper but I know how they can do that from when they use to eat the sides of their birdie playground and books.
is the newsprint poisonious to them if they did chew at it?

Just don't use the shiney colorprint paper like the suff for ads of coupons. That's toxic. Regular newsprint is fine... They have been using vegetable based inks for many years....

Hi Xena

There is a very good article on the Bird N Ways website called Cage Liners - The Bad and The Ugly by Carol Highfill (to read the article click here). She tells you the safety issues with each of the options.

The article recommends paper products as the best and safest materials to use. Newspaper is very good, but don't use either the glossy pages or those that have coloured ink or pictures. The glossy paper and coloured ink can contain lead and harmful chemicals.

I've always used either newpaper or plain white paper towel (which I buy when it is on special). It makes it easy to monitor bird droppings. You may not know that this is one of the first indicators we have of illness in our birds. An excellent article about understanding your bird's droppings is Poop-ology by Dr. David J. Kersting, D.V.M. To read the article, click here.

Cheers!

Abby

Newspaper!  That's the favorite around here too!

Thank you for all the info.
I had used regular bedding in the beginning but changed to paper towels and
recently changed to newspaper but wanted to be sure it was safe.
thank you for sending those links and experiences.
I am running now to take out that color shiney paper.   ughhhhhh
this site has saved my birds more than once.

Thank you
Xena
