Sorry for so many posts, but I'm new at my birds laying eggs. I candled a few of the eggs today, they have been sat on since June 1st. A few of them you can see the red veins but at the slightest movement (I hold them steady and don't shake or roll/tilt them) this little red dot, which I'm assuming is the embryo, correct me if I'm wrong, please, starts to move around also. Does this mean the embryo is likely dead?

Hi Beth. If you are seeing red blood vessels, more than likely it is a live embryo. If it had died, you would not see bright red blood vessels. They would darken and shrivel without blood circulating in them. Also, if you are holding it very still, there is no way it would be able to move. Cockatiel eggs have a gestation period of 17 to 23 days. So if an egg was laid the 1st, then it should hatch between the 18th & 22nd. They will usually hatch in the order they were laid and with the same spacing. Cockatiels normally will lay one egg, then lay every other day until they have a full clutch. 5 to 7 eggs is average, however I have had clutches of 3, 4, and 9 as well. |
