I am at my wits end with these two!  I caught them mating last night and this morning.  They are still laying on a clutch of 7 (if none hatch by this Sunday I'm throwing them out since they'll be old).  I can't seperate them b/c they're still taking turns on the nest.  Has this happened to anyone else before?  Should I seperate them for the hen's sake?

Beth

They must be a smaller species of birds and I'm sorry that I don't know what species they are....

I have only raised larger birds and I would take the eggs and hard boil them and then put them back into their nest (what I did that is) therefore they saw the eggs and didn't lay although still tried to mate...

Normally mine laid only two eggs but one pair of D2's started out wanting me to do the honours of finishing what they started and when I had candled both eggs I saw they were dudes.

They did leave the boiled eggs in the nest but continued to mate and "wake the dead."

Hopefully someone with more experience with smaller birds can advise you... Have you called your vet for suggestions as to what diet might help curb this instinct? I always had to cut back on greens/salads when mine were in the breeding mode and I'm sure there will be suggestions here about amount of light etc...
As for separating... I'm at a loss as to advising about that. I never had an option since mine were in the aviary.

Sorry, I forgot too mention these are tiels.  I'd try taking out the greens from their diet, but they don't even EAT greens (though I try and have been trying for a few months now!).  So frustrating!

If you don't want any new babies at all--and since this will most likely be an on-going problem, I'd suggest buying a set of fake eggs (they are intended for cockatiels, so they are the perfect size--can get them at many petstores or online) and replacing any real eggs with those, leaving them until they get tired of them.

Beth. this is from Annie who has been unable to reply

I haven't been able to reply in hours.

Beth, when my Maxi pionus went on her laying spree, 18 eggs over a period of a couple of months, my vet had me cool her area down, darken the room except for 5 hours a day of light, remove all veggies so it would look like winter with no fresh foods. It didn't work for us but may for you.
She lived in the birdroom with full spectrum lights, usually, so I moved her to the panelled den, put a quilt over the window and cut her fresh food out. She loved those veggies. I turned on the overhead incandescent light for only 5 hours each day. I cried because I felt like I was abusing her, but the vet said she is going to die eggbound if you don't try this.
She sat on her eggs for a long long time til I finally sneaked them out, one by one. She didn't act like she missed them after the first day. (She didn't sit on 18 at a time, just 2 or 3.)
Have you candled the eggs? It's possible some are viable and it would be a shame to toss those. If the eggs are not viable you can start taking them out one each day. Looks like they are ready to do this all over again. Be sure to have a good calcium source and that the hen eats it. Cuttlebone will be good if she chews on it.
Annie

Thank you guys for the replies. I am going to be separating them once we move. They will be in a divided breeder cage with bars in between them so they'll be able to see each other. It's not the baby situation I'm worried about, I don't want her to become egg bound and die. 2 of the eggs are fertile (or look to be, but haven't hatched yet---they have red veins and one has dark spots in it) the other 5 are not fertile. She originally laid 8 but one broke so I had to take it out. The last one was laid on the 7th so I'm giving them until Sunday/Monday to hatch/begin hatching. I check the 2 fertile ones today and neither has a pip mark. I didn't mark them in the order they were laid, so I'm not sure which ones they are.

I began limiting their day light today. They are usually in the light from 9 AM when I leave for work until 7 PM when it gets dark, but today I covered them when I took my lunch break at 2. I too, feel awful about it, especially when they can hear the other tiel whistling and chattering up a storm. But until I get the new cage for them, it's the only thing I can do to prevent any more egg laying for her. She has plenty of cuttlebone and vitamins in her water.

I will keep you all updated on the baby situation!

Beth
