Principles for losing weight

by Lisa Sanders, MD
Based on my research and clinical experience, I have developed a number of principles that apply to everyone trying to lose weight, no matter which diet they're following. Here are just a few:

Weight Gain Is Not a Moral Failure
For generations, dieters have been told that weight control is all about self-control and willpower. In fact, losing weight has nothing to do with willpower and everything to do with finding a diet that fits. Guilt is weight loss enemy number one. You don't have to be a paragon of willpower, but you have to learn not to give in to despair and self-destructive bingeing when you lapse.

Life Is Unfair
You've long suspected it; now science has proved it to be true. We inherit factors that determine how easy or hard it will be for each of us to gain or lose weight. Genes aren't destiny, but you can't pretend they don't exist. Work with what you've got. It's the only body you'll ever have.

Eat When You're Hungry, Not When You're Starving
Many dieters believe that it's good to feel hungry because that means they're eating less. Yes and no. When you allow yourself to get too hungry, your body thinks it's starving. Then when you finally allow yourself to eat, the cues that tell you that you have had enough are drowned out by your body's "panic" at the prospect of starvation. To stay in control, aim to eat three meals a day plus snacks.

Get Some Satisfaction
Eating is one of our most primal life drives, and like sex, eating is engineered around satisfaction. Diets that deny you that satisfaction don't work, for the simple reason that you can't stay on them. Make sure you eat foods you enjoy, and enjoy the foods you eat.

Deal with Stress--Don't Add to It
Stress makes most of us overeat high-fat foods. And stress hormones change our body's metabolism and cause us to gain weight. Since we all have stress in our lives, much of weight management really comes down to stress management.

Exercise Smart
What few dieters understand is that, like food, exercise has to fit your preferences. Otherwise you won't stick with it.
