Grapefruit Diet

The Promise:

In 2 1/2 months you should lose 52 pounds. I'm not sure if this promise is accurate, and I haven't tried this diet, it seems a little odd though, but who knows, maybe just read this one and laugh at it.

The Rules:

  1. You must drink eight 8oz. glasses of water daily (64 oz. total per day).
  2. At any meal you may eat until you are full.
  3. You must eat the minimum listed at each meal. (yep, this diet list the minimum you should eat).
  4. You cannot eliminate anything from the diet. Especially the bacon at breakfast and the salads. You must eat the bacon and salads. These combinations of food burn the fat, omitting one part of the combination will cause the whole thing not to work.
  5. The grapefruit or fruit juice is important because it acts as a catalyst that starts the burning process. Don't add or reduce the amount of grapefruit or juice.
  6. Cut down on coffee, it affects the insulin balance that hinders the burning process. Try to limit to 1 cup at meal time.
  7. Don't eat between meals. If you eat the suggested foods you will not get hungry.
  8. You can fry food in butter and use butter generously on vegetables.
  9. Do not eat desserts, breads, and white vegetables or sweet potatoes.
  10. You may double or triple helpings of meat, salad or vegetables.
  11. Eat until you are stuffed. The more you eat the more weight you will lose.
  12. Stay on the diet 12 days, then stop the diet for 2 days and repeat.

Diet Plan:

Breakfast:
  1. Either 1/2 grapefruit OR 8 oz. juice (unsweetened)
  2. 2 eggs any style
  3. 2 slices of bacon
Lunch:
  1. Either 1/2 grapefruit OR 8 oz. juice (unsweetened)
  2. Salad with any dressing
  3. Meat any style and any amount.
Dinner:
  1. Either 1/2 grapefruit OR 8 oz. juice (unsweetened)
  2. Salad with any dressing OR a red or green vegetable cooked in butter or spices.
  3. Meat or even Fish any style cooked any way.
  4. Coffee or Tea (1 cup)
Bedtime Snack:
  1. 8oz. glass of tomato juice or 8 oz cup of skim milk.

The Grapefruit Diet Plan

Fad Diets - Review

For information and reading purposes only.  Diet Bites does NOT recommend the Grapefruit Diet Plan due to its potentially harmful health risk.  And have you ever known anyone who achieved LONG-TERM success on this diet? We haven't.

This fad promises a loss of 10 pounds in a dozen days without starvation.  Isn't that nice?  It also allows 3 meals per day with a bedtime snack.  Isn't that nice?

And supposedly, the juice of the grapefruit enhances the fat burning process.  So does exercise, which by the way, is part of The Grapefruit Diet Plan.  Hum.

Let's not forget about that oh-so-important beta-carotene found in the exotic pink grapefruit which helps to reduce the cholesterol level and build a healthy heart.  Too bad that any heart benefits are squashed due to low calorie food consumption, as well as bingeing on unhealthy meats for lunch.  Note: Meats are a healthy part of a balanced diet when eaten in MODERATION.

The diet is intended as a jumpstart for the dieter.  We are still trying to determine if that is a jumpstart to a pre-mature heart condition OR a jumpstart to a unsuccessful diet.

Again, we have never met anyone who achieved LONG-TERM success using this potentially harmful diet plan.

THE MENU

Whenever 'grapefruit' is mentioned below, the dieter has the choice of eating 1/2 a grapefruit or drinking 8 ounces of unsweetened grapefruit juice.

Breakfast:

grapefruit + 2 eggs prepared any way you choose + 2 slices of bacon

Lunch:

grapefruit + salad with the dressing of your choice + all the meat you want

Dinner:

grapefruit + salad with the dressing of your choice OR a red or green veggie prepared with butter/spices + meat or fish + 1 cup of coffee or tea

Bedtime Snack:

1 cup of skimmed milk

Unless you go totally a-i-p at lunch and clean the local butcher out of business, the diet is ultra low in calories - actually, insufficiently so for daily nutrition.

Our advice?  Skip those citrus mouth ulcers and stick with common sense - a diet packed with nutrition!

The Grapefruit Diet

The old Grapefruit Diet has been floating around for a long time. Its popularity for so many years can be attributed to pseudo-science and good marketing copy. This is one of those fad diets that you can use to drop some quick pounds, but, like all fad diets, you need to recognize that it's deficient nutritionally and that you'll gain back what you lose as soon as you get off the diet IF you return to your old eating habits.

It's pretty much agreed by the Grapefruit Diet gurus that most people who try the program for a week or two will probably lose somewhere between 12 and 20 pounds.

Below is a typical day on the Grapefruit Diet

Breakfast:
Half a grapefruit and plain coffee or tea [Note from Chet: I recommend that you give up coffee for good. Click here and then click here to learn why.]

Lunch:
Half a grapefruit plus two eggs
Cucumber and tomato salad with vinegar, lemon and herbs dressing
One piece of dry melba toast and plain tea or water

Dinner:
Half a grapefruit
4-6 ounces of chicken or beef or ham slices
Half a head of lettuce and a tomato
with vinegar, lemon and herbs dressing
Plain tea or water

With a diet this restrictive -- eating fewer that 800 calories a day -- you can see why you'd lose weight. You can also see how nutritionally deficient this program is. And talk about boring. Phew.
