Daniel 4 Text Verse 31
For centuries the Bible with all it’s wonderful truths and all it’s types and shadows of actual people places and events is absolutely convicting to the soul. Many things of the natural realm were used set forth a spiritual truth and also we can use those spiritual truths in our everyday lives. The Bible says in Proverbs 8:13 the fear of the Lord is to hate evil, pride and arrogancy, and the evil way and the forward mouth do I hate. Pride is the exact opposite to true wisdom because true fear of the Lord produces humility. When pride cometh then cometh shame but with the lowly is wisdom. Pride can also produce a strong contempt and dislike for the person who has it causing others not to be around that person. It has happened and will probably happen again where God will surely bring a prideful person to a place where they could loose everything and to a place of utter destruction. Mark 7:22 links pride with such words as foolishness, blasphemy, theft, and covetousness. Many times the word pride is mentioned with evil either preceding or proceeding verses. It is an awful sin and a lot of times it is not easily detected until it’s too late. Nebuchadnezzar is one such person. A leader of many accomplishments all backed up by historical records. Unfortunately though he obtained and kept much by shedding blood and with the sword. He was about to come to a point where he would be brought low to the place literally of an animal. Lower than I believe any human can comprehend. He was going to be taught by none other than God Himself how to properly praise and evoke the name of God the Creator. If you’ll notice old Nebuchadnezzar had a terrible habit of me, mine, I and drawing attention to himself. His kingdom would soon be taken away. Even after Daniel warned him he still didn’t listen. It would seem he was repentant at times but like many of us today just an act and no true heartfelt Godly sorrow. So let’s see what happens when pride sets in using this old wicked king as an example: (1) He thought he was the best ever (2) He was a braggart (3) Selfish (4) Wouldn’t say I’m sorry or was wrong (5) His kingdom was taken away (6) His possessions were to become useless to him (7) He was partly an partly beast (8) Brutish (9) No human understanding or sense (10) His nails became as claws (11) His hair as feathers (12) Probably bellowed like an ox (13) Probably also bent over or walked on all fours (14) Separated from his loved ones (15) Emotional distress You can tell a prideful person by the way they hold their head and by certain body language and also the look in their eyes. They also are boastful, large mouthed, who believe they have just got to be heard. They try to manipulate and control. It is a shame that God may have to put some people flat on their backs to get their attention or let a terrible tragedy come to them or a family member. Sometimes if we refuse to repent God can and does put folks in a coffin. God will prove that He and He alone is worthy of praise. I do wonder at times just how many preachers, evangelists, deacons, teachers have gone way before their time because of pride. After seeing some of these things shouldn’t we look at ourselves in the mirror and wonder if I’m that way. God has always given people space to repent. Beware though, just because He doesn’t act swiftly doesn’t mean He’s brushed it off. God will resist the proud. Pride goeth before destruction and an haughty spirit before a fall. Proverbs 16:18 |
