Daniel 2:31-49, The Lord Reigns

Daniel 2:31 31 "You, O king, were watching; and behold, a great image! This great image, whose splendor was excellent, stood before you; and its form was awesome. 32 "This image's head was of fine gold, its chest and arms of silver, its belly and thighs of bronze, 33 "its legs of iron, its feet partly of iron and partly of clay. 34 "You watched while a stone was cut out without hands, which struck the image on its feet of iron and clay, and broke them in pieces. 35 "Then the iron, the clay, the bronze, the silver, and the gold were crushed together, and became like chaff from the summer threshing floors; the wind carried them away so that no trace of them was found. And the stone that struck the image became a great mountain and filled the whole earth.

The head of Gold

Daniel 2:36 "This is the dream. Now we will tell the interpretation of it before the king. 37 "You, O king, are a king of kings. For the God of heaven has given you a kingdom, power, strength, and glory; 38 "and wherever the children of men dwell, or the beasts of the field and the birds of the heaven, He has given them into your hand, and has made you ruler over them all-you are this head of gold.

Nebuchadnezzar was the head of gold. But not Nebuchadnezzar only, but the entire kingdom of Babylon, as Daniel quickly makes it clear that he is speaking of empires, not individuals. As the head and representative of the kingdom, Nebuchadnezzar stood in symbol for the kingdom itself.

Now the use of gold as a symbol of Babylon is significant. The choice was not a random one. Speaking of Babylon the prophet Jeremiah says: “Babylon hath been a golden cup in the Lord’s hand.?(Jeremiah 51:7). And Isaiah spoke of Babylon as, “The glory of kingdoms, the beauty of the Chaldees’s excellency.?(Isaiah 13:19).

Under Nebuchadnezzar, Babylon was the recognized intellectual capital of the world. Babylon became the center of wealth and power. If any single metal could be used to symbolize Babylon it would be gold. All the great wealth of gold collected by king Solomon had, by one route or another, by the time of Nebuchadnezzar, made it’s way to city of Babylon. When Herodotus, the ancient historian visited Babylon almost a hundred years after its fall, even at that late date he found temples, alters, shrines -- all plated with gold. But Daniel continues:

The Chest and Arms of Silver

Daniel 2: 39 "But after you shall arise another kingdom inferior to yours; . . .

Babylon was not to last forever. A new “world?power was to make its mark on the pages of history. From the east came the armies of the Medes and the Persians. And they attacked and they conquered until in all the middle east, Babylon alone held out against them.

Cyrus, commander of the Medo-Persian armies laid siege to Babylon.

The Babylonians gathered within what they truly believed to be impregnable walls (as impregnable it proved, as the Titanic was unsinkable) with (historians tell us) provisions that potentially could have lasted them for 20 years, and with the ability to grow more food within the walls should that be needed.  In fact, the Babyonians were so confident they could outlast the Medo-Persian armies that they decided to throw a party. And humanly speaking they had good reason to feel secure. By any means of warfare then known, that city could not be taken. Never! It was said of the Titanic that God Himself could not sink that ship. Well we know how that turned out. The Babylonians probably felt much the same way about their city. And history tells us how that turned out too. And indeed, except God had been on their side, the Medo-Persians would have been no more able to take Babylon than the Israelites would have been able to take Jericho in their own strength.

Cyrus knew that there was no way he could ever breach those walls, but he had a plan. Archaeologist tell us that the walls of Babylon were so broad that there was actually a row of houses on the outer rim of that wall -- and another row of housed on the inner rim -- and a street between them so wide that a chariot with a team of four horses could be driven down it.

But, the Euphrates river also flowed under that wall, providing the city with an unlimited supply of water. Cyrus decided to make the cannel of the Euphrates river his highway in to the Babylonian stronghold. Accordingly he divided his army into three parts. One part he stationed a few miles upstream with orders to divert the river into a new channel. The other two parts of his army were stationed on either side of the city where the river passed under the walls, with orders to enter the channel just as soon as they found the river shallow enough to be fordable, and then to make their way under the walls into the city, and on to the palace -- where the Bible tells us -- that on that very night Belshazzar, king of Babylon, feeling very secure inside those massive walls was holding a drunken feast in praise of his gods. (Daniel 5).

It was a brilliant idea, using the river channel to enter the city; but there was one rather major flaw in Cyrus’s plan, and if it were not for the direct intervention of God, Cyrus’s plan would have failed. You see, on each side of the river through the entire length of the city, were walls just as formidable as the outer walls of the city. In these walls were massive bronze gates which when opened allowed access to the river - but when closed barred all entrance from the river. If those gates had been shut, Cyrus’s army might have marched into the city along that river bed, and marched right on through and out the other side for all the good it would have done them. But God had long before taken the matter into His own hands.

Isaiah 45:1 "Thus says the LORD to His anointed, To Cyrus, whose right hand I have held-To subdue nations before him And loose the armor of kings, To open before him the double doors, So that the gates will not be shut:

Impressed? You should be. This prophecy was written a good 150 years before Cyrus was even born. Imagine it. Some 150 years before Cyrus was born, some 200 years before the siege of Babylon began, (I am not exactly sure of Cyrus’s age at the time, but he was somewhere in his 50‘s or 60‘s) God had already promised Cyrus by name that those gates leading into the city would be open for him. And so they were. The Medo-Persian army walked in right through those open gates and took the city of Babylon without a fight.

Daniel 2 is not so much about the rise and fall of empires as it is about the power and sovereignty of God over all the nations and kingdoms of the world. As it says in . . .

Daniel 4:25 . . .the Most High rules in the kingdom of men, and gives it to whomever He chooses.

Acts 17:26 [God] hath made of one blood all nations of men to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation.

God is rightly called, “the King of Kings, and Lord of Lords.?(1 Timothy 6:15).  For our God is great enough; and our God is big enough; and our God is strong enough; and our God is smart enough; and our God is wise enough to rule over the nations of the earth - even in this age in which we live. And just what is God up to in all this seeming turmoil of the rise and fall of nations? Just read on to verse 27 of Acts 17.

Acts 17:27 That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us.

What is all the turmoil among the nations all about? The salvation of souls. “That they should seek the Lord.?/FONT> With our limited understanding, with our limited vision, it all looks so confusing and out of control. And we wonder what good can ever come out of it all. But some day we will see the big picture. And in that day we will have nothing but glory and praise to give to God -- for the wonderful work he has done on the earth.

There is a very revealing passage in the book of Deuteronomy concerning this very thing. Take a look at it.

Deuteronomy 32:8 When the most High divided to the nations their inheritance, when he separated the sons of Adam, he set the bounds of the people according to the number of the children of Israel.

Note what it says. It says that when God divides the nations, when He sets their boundaries, (the very thing Acts 17:26 speaks of) the one consideration He makes is “the number of the children of Israel.?When you understand “Israel?in this verse in the greater sense of “spiritual Israel?this takes on even greater significance for our day. In the rise and fall of nations, the one and only consideration on God’s part is how it will affect His people.

And so, the Medo-Persian army conquered Babylon. Not by the might of their armies. Not by their spears and swords. Not by their superior cunning. But because God said so. Period.

And just as gold was a fitting symbol for Babylon, silver very rightly represented the Medo-Persian empire. Since by law all taxes had to be paid in silver, the empire grew extremely wealthy in silver. But more than that, just as silver is a stronger metal than gold, the Medo-Persian empire was stronger military power than Babylon ever was, and as a consequence conquered a much larger territory. This too was indicated in the prophecy. In the King James Bible this kingdom is said to be “inferior?to Babylon. What Daniel actually said in Aramaic was, “After thee shall arise another kingdom downward from thee, earthward from thee,?While it was to have less concentrated wealth than Babylon - it was also to have a more extensive territory.

The Belly and Thighs of Bronze

Daniel 3:39 . . .and another third kingdom of brass, which shall bear rule over all the earth.

This was the Grecian empire. And by the way, I am not merely guessing at the identity of these empires. Not only is history very clear as to the sequence of empires in history, but as you progress into the other prophetic sequences in Daniel, these empires are called by name.

If any empire, any people, could be characterized by bronze or brass it would be the Greeks. They were experts in the use of the metal. Greek soldiers wore helmets of bronze. They carried shields of bronze. Bronze was their metal of choice, so much so that historians have styled them “brazen coated Greeks.?/FONT>

And just as silver is harder that gold, so is bronze harder that silver. The conquest of Medo-Persia by the Greeks was unprecedented for it’s swiftness. Under the command of Alexander the Great, the Greek armies conquered not only all of Persia, but also all of the then known world; thus fulfilling the words of prophecy that this third kingdom “shall bear rule over all the earth.?But the prophecy continues.

The Legs of Iron

Daniel 2:40 "And the fourth kingdom shall be as strong as iron, inasmuch as iron breaks in pieces and shatters everything; and like iron that crushes, that kingdom will break in pieces and crush all the others.

In its turn, Greece gave way to Rome. And it is Rome that is represented by the legs of iron. For more than 500 years Rome seemed almost unconquerable. Known to history as the iron monarchy, It was Rome that conquered Greece. And it was Rome that ruled when Christ was born. Romans standards waved from the British isles to the Sahara desert; from the Atlantic to the Euphrates. Her Caesars were worshiped as gods, and Rome ruled every nation under her influence with an iron fist.

Through the political and social turmoil of the ages, through the rise and fall of nations and empires, God was working out his purpose. But the prophecy does not end here, and this world’s history is not yet over. Daniel continues. . .

The Feet and Toes of Iron and Clay

Daniel 2:41 "Whereas you saw the feet and toes, partly of potter's clay and partly of iron, the kingdom shall be divided; yet the strength of the iron shall be in it, just as you saw the iron mixed with ceramic clay. 42 "And as the toes of the feet were partly of iron and partly of clay, so the kingdom shall be partly strong and partly fragile.

Rome was never conquered. Nevertheless it fell. A new element of weakness is introduced. Clay is mixed with the iron. Rome lost that iron strength which had made it such an unstoppable force in those first centuries.

The iron legs of the image terminated in feet and toes of iron mixed with clay. Some have seen in this a symbol of our modern world largely built of reinforced concrete, iron and clay. At this point explicit mention is made of the toes, and it has been noted that the western Roman empire was in time carved up into ten divisions. All historians agree, that out of the territory of the western Roman empire ten, (one for each toe) and only ten separate kingdoms were ultimately established. No historian places the beginning of this division of the Roman empire earlier that AD 351, and there is general agreement in assigning its close to AD 476.

These ten divisions were the -- Lombard’s, Alemanni, Anglo-Saxons, Ostrogoths, Burundians, Franks, Suevi, Vandals, Visigoths, and the Heruli. Indeed the connection between these ten kingdoms and the modern nations of Europe are still traceable in the names. For example, the Franks became the French. The Anglo-Saxons the English, The Alamanni the Germans, etc.

From time to time the exact number of European nations have varied. From time to time a strong nation would be able to weld a few of the fragments together, only to see them shatter once again. “Partly strong and partly broken?/FONT> the prophecy said. And so it has proven to be.

Daniel 2:43 "As you saw iron mixed with ceramic clay, they will mingle with the seed of men; but they will not adhere to one another, just as iron does not mix with clay.

The iron was mixed with clay and lost the power of cohesion. No man or combination of men can ever again consolidate the fragments of Rome. Yet, time and again men have dreamed of a building new Rome, a new European empire. Charlemagne tried, and failed. Charles V tried, and failed. Louis XIV tried, and failed. Napoleon tried, and failed. A single verse of Scripture was mightier than all their armies and all their scheming. The iron was mingled with the clay. Time and again people have thought they could defy the prophecy, but history faithfully records their failure.

But if military might cannot weld the empire back together, perhaps diplomacy can. And so the prophecy says “They shall mingle themselves with the seed of men.?/FONT> Marriages were formed with the hope of consolidating their power and uniting these divided kingdoms. And the history of Europe is a running commentary of the exact fulfillment of these words of prophecy -- until by the opening of the 20th century every ranking hereditary ruler in Europe was related to the British royal family.

World War I showed the utter futility of these attempts. Kaiser Wilhelm II tried, and failed. The League of Nations tried, and failed. Hitler tried, and failed. And today the United Nations is trying, and failing just as miserably as all the rest. Today many put their hope in the European Union, but prophecy says that that too will fail. “Partly strong and partly broken."  Just strong enough to give false hope, but too broken for their ever to be true success. From time to time men have come very close to fulfilling their dream of an fully united Europe, but always, in the end, the word of God proves too powerful for them.

Psalm 33:9 For He spoke, and it was done; He commanded, and it stood fast. 10 The LORD brings the counsel of the nations to nothing; He makes the plans of the peoples of no effect.

God has spoken. His will, will be done.

Alliances may come and go, and it may appear for a time that the iron is mixing with the miry clay. But God has said, ?FONT color=#006600>They shall not cleave one to another.?/FONT> It may seem that the old animosities have disappeared, but the Scriptures cannot be broken. And indeed, in Revelation we find that near the very end of time it will appear, for a mere flickering moment, that man has finally at long last succeeded in reuniting a broken Europe - only to have it all crumble around them, toppling like a house of cards.

We serve a great and mighty God. These verses bring this prophecy up to our own day. We are living in the days represented by the toes of the image. In, fact, we are most probably at the very end of the toe-nails of the image. And still the prophecy continues, for this is not yet the end.

The Stone

Daniel 2:44 "And in the days of these kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom which shall never be destroyed; and the kingdom shall not be left to other people; it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand forever. 45 "Inasmuch as you saw that the stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and that it broke in pieces the iron, the bronze, the clay, the silver, and the gold-the great God has made known to the king what will come to pass after this. The dream is certain, and its interpretation is sure."

We are living in the days of these kings, in the days of these kingdoms. And the prophecy says that in these days, while they still exist as independent kingdoms, God will smash, utterly destroy every trace of every earthly kingdom and set up his own kingdom which will last forever.

This image has stood complete for more than 14 centuries. The only thing that remains is for it to be ground to dust by the Stone, the Rock of Ages. So far as this prophecy is concerned, the very next event is the setting up of God’s everlasting kingdom.

This Stone strikes the feet and toes, at the very time the nations are desperately trying to reunite a divided Europe. This prophetic message thunders its message -- There will be no more “world?empires. There will be no United States of Europe. There will be no one world government -- until God himself sets up his kingdom in the earth made new. God’s kingdom will not be ushered in through the gateway of politics.

The stone that smote the image was not quarried by human hands -- that is, it is not of human making. Human schemes; all our best laid plans, all our devising, all our pacts, all our politics, all our armies, all our treaties, all our legislation, all our laws, all our revolutions -- none of these are the stone that destroys the image and sets up God‘s kingdom. The Stone, the Rock of Ages is heaven sent.

Before God’s kingdom is set up, every last trace of all earthly kingdoms are forever destroyed. Absolutely nothing pertaining to earthly politics remain. As the prophecy said. “Then was the iron, the clay, the brass, the silver, and the gold, broken to pieces together, and became like the chaff of the summer threshing floors; and the wind carried them away, that no place was found for them:?(Daniel 2:35).

It is not a take over. It is not a make over, not even an extreme make over. It is a world made new. When Jesus comes, all that we see, and all that we know will be utterly destroyed. Total destruction, total eradication, utter annihilation.

In His divine providence God is once again directing the movements of nations, and the tide of human impulse, preparing a world and a people for the second coming of Jesus. Everything is being worked out for that one event.

Daniel 2:46 Then King Nebuchadnezzar fell on his face, prostrate before Daniel, and commanded that they should present an offering and incense to him. 47 The king answered Daniel, and said, "Truly your God is the God of gods, the Lord of kings, and a revealer of secrets, since you could reveal this secret." 48 Then the king promoted Daniel and gave him many great gifts; and he made him ruler over the whole province of Babylon, and chief administrator over all the wise men of Babylon. 49 Also Daniel petitioned the king, and he set Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego over the affairs of the province of Babylon; but Daniel sat in the gate of the king.
