October Edition

Facts about OCTOBER

October is the tenth month of the year. October was the 8th month in the early Roman calendar. October has had 31 days since the time of the Roman emperor Augustus.

The first frost usually happens in October in the North Temperate Zone. Leaves change to their brilliant colors, and begin to fall, making the ground a beautiful haven of color. The farmers have to finish harvesting of the crops, but winter isn't here yet. The cold won't stay. In fact, we will still have warm days ahead.

Most birds have left for the south by the first frost, but the sparrows love the weather. They are seed eaters, and eat many weed seeds that would otherwise damage the next field crops.

Farmers bring in the last of the fall crops and either store or ship them to other parts of the world. In some parts, apples and grapes are still on the trees and vines. Many apples are harvested at the end of October.

Football usually dominates the scene in October. Hockey also begins it's season in October. And, the World Series will steal some of the spotlight from other sports.

COLUMBUS DAY is celebrated in many schools and various organizations. It comes on the second Mondayin October. Columbus Day honors Christopher Columbus' arrival in America on Oct. 12, 1492.

THANKSGIVING DAY is celebrated in Canada on the second Monday of the month

HALLOWEEN is celebrated on the last night of October, with children dressing up in masks and costumes, going door to door, asking for a treat

                                   Columbus Day

 When: Second Monday in October

For decades and decades, American history books and school teaching told us that Christopher  Columbus discovered America. What those books and teachings did not give credit to was the fact  that Native Americans were already here first and truly discovered America. It also ga ve little mention to the fact that Nordic explorers had travelled down the eastern cost of Canada thousands of years earlier.

Today, we celebrate Columbus day for what it accurately is. Columbus did discover the existence of the New World for Europeans who until then, believed the world was flat and ended somewhere in the      Atlantic. And, the focus is more upon discovery of the "New World", and less upon Columbus    himself.

Did You Know? Columbus day is sometimes referred to as "Discoverer's Day".
