Fairy Godmother

The Faerie Godmother

We've all read about the Faery Godmother in childrens stories like
Cinderella but who is The Faery Godmother?
The Faerie Godmother is the faerie that brings speical gifts to newborns.
In ancient Greek mythology the Greek Fates were three women who visited a child three nights after it's birth to determine the course of its life. Now these Fates were described as cold, remorseless old crones or hags. Not at all like todays images.

The Celtic ancester of the Faerie Godmother was known as the Celtic Triple Matres/Mother. She watches over special places such as wells, springs, and the home, and over the course of our lives, our destiny.

In Fairy tales the Fairy Godmother woud cast spells with the wave of her magic wand, and help save the hero or heroine of the story from danger and from themselves. In many stores the Faery Godmother must cast off the curse of a bad faery or evil step parent. Stories like Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, Snow White, are all stories that remind us not to forget to not only invite the faeries to important events but to thank them for the good they do.

Believing in Faeries

fairbeli.jpg

Do you believe in Faeries? Have you ever seen one? Faeries are very elusive creatures who live in a world that coexists within the magickal Otherworld known as the underground country. It's hard to for some people to believe in a world that runs alongside our world but in a different dimension and time frame yet that is what Fairyland is. In this world faeries are able to move from their world to ours using doorways and the magickal secret passwords because they know where these doorways are all over the earth. It's different for humans because not all humans remember the old ways. It is said the ones who do remember these ways are called "walkers between worlds" and these are druids and witches who hold onto the old ways.

Faeries are refered to as natural spirits. It depends on the person as to how they envision these creature. There are many different types of faeries but it is up to you how you wish to envision them for that is how you will see them. Since the spirit of the faerie is a different sort of body than we know then the way they appear to us comes from a more psychic interpretation than just looking in the mirror and seeing yourself or your friend. It doesn't matter what your perception of a faerie is because there is no wrong perception since it is a personal interpretation.

It really doesn't matter what our interpretation of these spirits of nature are most Pagans will agree they do exist in one for or another. The belief in faeries or nature spirits seems to be natural when you follow the magickal path. My belief in faeries started long before I knew I was going along a magickal path. I would have to say it started with stories like Peter Pan, Cinderella, and Sleeping Beauty but my favorite faerie I would have to say was Tinker Bell. There is a famous line in that movie that goes "Every time you say you don't believe in faeries, a faerie dies." Sad to think of it that way but in a way there is some truth to that because for every time we say we do not believe in faeries then it makes it harder and harder for them to stay in our world and coexsist with humans. They slip back into their own world, back into fairyland. It is our knowledge and belief in faeries that gives them the magick to come and go from our world to theirs.

Have you ever found yourself in a conversation with someone about faeries and they seem hesitant to talk about it as if they were waiting for you to say you believe before they would admit they believe? Well I have. During those times, for most of my life, I was afraid to admit I believed in faeries or anything else magickal for fear they would think I was crazy. Then shortly after I came out of the broom closet I was having a conversation at a relatives house about things missing from the house and hearing footsteps but no one was there and I just smiled and didn't say a word. The person who was talking noticed my responce and asked me what I thought and I answered one word, "faeries." At first she smiled and the others chuckled but I added, "think about it! You can't find something you placed on the bed, then poof it's back again. You lost your wallet, then all of a sudden it shows up. You hear giggles or footsteps but no one is around and you swear it sounds like children." That is exactly what she had said. Well she thought about it and so did every one else and before you know it they agreed they believed they just felt funny saying so.

Typically faeries are mischievious and light heart, they like music and dancing and just having fun. Aside from that they teach us a lesson. They teach us the ancient secrets of old that empower us and help us with our every day struggles in life. Since most humans do not believe in faeries or will not admit they believe the faeries don't see why they should pass on this knowledge, why they should help those who do not believe in so it is only those who do believe in the faerie realms that the faerie appears and helps.

Take the time every day to acknowledge the spirits of nature in daily rituals like the tradition of leaving a bit of milk or honey out. I don't have an out door garden but I do plant indoors and I take the time every day to talk to my plants and in doing so I am communing with the spirits of nature and reminding them every day that I do believe. This of course does have it's benefits since it not only brings an inner peace but faeries are very helpful in magic if they choose to be and faeries who become familuar with you can be an asset to a magical working. However, always keep in mind they to add their own special touches to the intent and although it is usually good you need to be a bit careful of the possibility of misdirection since nature spirits are basically like nature itself and can at times cause chaos.

Even though every persons perception of faeries is different it is what draws us together. Each faerie is unique because our it comes from our psychic perception. House spirits, nature spirits, no matter what you call them they bring magick into the lives of those who acknowledge them. Once you have made that connection and have a faerie for a friend you are truely blessed and the magick never stops. When a faerie knows you can see them they will never leave you alone, they will become apart of your family. Remember if a faerie plays a trick on you it is usually to get your attention or to teach you a lesson. You need to pay close attention to what it is he or she is doing.

Long ago humans used to honor Mother Nature and her children, "The Fae" by praying, singing and feasting. But as time went on and more and more people inhabit this world we lost touch with nature. We lost touch with her children. We have forgotten they are still there. How could we just turn our back on Mother Nature? How could we tell her not only do we not care about the environment but we don't believe in your children? Yet so many have said just that. I, for one, am glad they did not listen to the many and are hanging on to those who do believe. They are still here by the woods, water, and gardens, playing hide-n-seek and waiting for just the right person to come along and let them know they have a friend. That someone does believe. Believing in faeries and letting them into your life is letting happiness and fun into your life. I for one believe and now that I think about it, I guess I always have.
