Hiding Your Altar?/STRONG>

*Hiding Your Altar *

If you're in the broom closet, there is a good chance your altar needs to be in there with you.

Just remember that your altar area doesn't need to scream "I'm a WITCH" to
everyone that sees it. Try a more subtle approach. You can represent many sacred things and no one would be the wiser. Items like seashells, feathers and pretty stones could represent water, air and earth. Candles are usually a pretty safe item for display, for fire. Appropriate (but non-Pagan) artwork on the walls is another way to add sacred images to your space. Even if these things are meaningless to other people, all that matters is what they represent to you. I have more suggestions on hiding your altar in this other article.

I can relate to "hiding in the broom closet".
The weekend of Aug. 8th I was having a family/friends party on the 9th for my birthday (on the 8th). Even though my altar is in my room, my son who lives with me and I packed up the whole thing into a box, before all the company arrived, until after my sister from Vancouver and other son from southern Ontario and family left. My son arrived with all 3 kids, the boys being 2&1/2 and 3&1/2 are just to curious and my son's wife and my sister would freak right out to see the altar.
I had enough comments when they saw the crystal ball I have out 2 years go, let alone the whole kit and kaboodle, they would have seen now! Just easier to not have to explain myself and my things to those who don't understand.
Once they all went home, I took everything out and set it back out on a table in my room, and beside it have a lovely chest with the triple moon on it with a whole bunch of new herbs I had just bought last month.
On one hand I feel like a hypocrit, but knowing how especially my sister would react should she see my altar, was just easier to pack everything up than explain myself and my belief system to her.

Oh well one day maybe even family can move into acceptance to everything that is "different".

I  know what you mean about hiding it from family members its even harder when you have to live with someone. My sons dad lives with my son & I . He  always asks me why I  worship the devil & I say I do not . And then it gets into a heated discussion and I  feel like I  have to keep explaining it over and over again. So now I  just ignore it. I  still believe what I  believe.
