I'm about to join up with a new group as I've told you about in another discussion. They ask for 6 months of hanging out and learning then after that if your ready to make the choice of joining the coven or not.
Which do you prefer? Sole practioner or in a coven (group)? Do others, family, friends know what your into? Are you open to the public about your beliefs in witchcraft or paganism?
It does make me nervous to come out of the broom closet. And I wonder if it's just me.
As back in the 1970's there was a rightwing Christian group, from about 500 miles away, who made it their mission to be after "witches and pagans". Causing not only emotional damage but damaging homes, property and kidnapping cats and anything they thought a "witch" would use. If they got the witch alone they would want them to repent and go with only 1 God and basically was a form of kidnapping and torture....the stories about it were down right scary, that kept several of us deep in the closet until we knew the leader had passed away. My best friend and I were warned by her mother and her girlfriend who "they" had found out about (the friend that is) and had been kept in her home for hours by them until she burnt her craft things and "repented". Fortunately she convinced them she was a sole practioner so she didn't give up any one else's names she knew of. (sounds like the old witch hunts eh? but it was very true unfortunately)
But this is one of the main reasons that I'm so nervous about being open. Even in both sides of my family who are very psychic or sensitive, and have decades of history reading cards and tea leaves and knowing "things" and a few great aunts who were known "witches" but there was always the underlying thing of keeping things quiet and appearing "normal" to the world.
So do you find society is more open now and accepting or do you just do what you do behind closed doors? .... for whatever reasons.
You were asking for a discussion I thought this might be a good one
I'm interested in what everyone thinks and says.
Have a great long weekend.
