Today's Meditation:

There used to be a time when I wanted to have a really nice car, one that would be super comfortable and enjoyable to drive.  Nowadays, I'm pretty happy to have the car I have.  It's eight years old, inexpensive, and more than comfortable enough for me.  When I watch car ads on TV, I really have no desire at all to rush out and buy a new car when my car gets me where I'm going quite well.

I used to want to have all the answers to everything; now I'm quite content to keep in mind that I'll probably never know most answers.  I used to have a pretty strong desire for positive feedback from other people, but now that I understand people and their motivations much better, I don't need to hear certain things from them.

I'm definitely a different person than I was five, ten, or twenty years ago.  And the more I grow and learn, the more I realize that the things I wanted when I was much younger were youthful desires, and they really play little part in my life right now.  Then, I was much more susceptible to the influence of others, and my wants reflected that influence.  Now, I'm learning to be my own person, and I'm becoming more and more satisfied with all that I have already.  Life's nice that way.

Questions to consider:

What are some of the things you used to want?
Why did you want them?

Do you feel that you want more things now than before, or fewer?
More expensive things, or simpler things?

Why do our wants change as time goes on?

For further thought:

If you realize that all things change,
there is nothing you will try to hold onto.

the Tao Te Ching

Today's quotation:

We believe we can change things according to our wishes because that’s the only happy solution we can see.  We don’t think of what usually happens and what is also a happy solution:  things don’t change, but by and by our wishes change.

Marcel Proust
