Athena’s Scarf~Spider Stitch

Story about Athena

In Greek mythology Athena was the ultimate career woman. As goddess of war Athena was a grand strategist. Athena was referred to as virgin because she was able to remain independent, unswayed by the spells of Aphrodite, the goddess of love, and the consequent pull of marriage and motherhood. Romance and marriage did not come to play in Athena's mythology. In greek mythology Athena was, in essence, the prototype of the contemporary "career woman".

Athena fancied using her wisdom in the role of judge, negotiating and problem-solving in order to keep the peace.

Associated with the urbane life and the city, during peacetime the greek goddess Athena devoted her considerable skills seeing to the progress of civilization, including her patronage of the arts and literature.

Crafty Story about Athena

There is a story about Athena and Arachne. Both women were in a contest to see who was the best weaver.

Arachne’s tapestry was very offensive to Athena because it depicted adulterous affair of her father, Zeus. Athena could not believe Arachne could do something so mocking of authority. Athena slashed the tapestry to pieces and drove Arachne to hang herself. After Athena calmed down a bit she took pity on Arachne and let her live. Athena transformed Arachne into a spider so she could weave her brilliant webs for eternity.

The goddess Athena was celebrated as the patron of weavers, potters, goldsmiths, sculptors, musicians, and horsemen. Athena was credited with the invention of the yoke and the bridle, the sailing ship, and the flute and trumpet.

Prayer to Athena~

I call Upon Athena the respectable, the one that Zeus engendered of himself,
Noble, happy and brave goddess in the fight,
Present and invisible, inhabitant in the beautiful valleys and the mountains.
You hit of your lance the spirits of the people, mother of the arts,
Strong and fearless young girl, in the changeable aspects,

Inspired friend, the queen to the green eyes,
Beautiful goddess to the brilliant glance which carries victory,
Warrior and virtuous, ardent and terrible for the bad men,
Compassionate Virgo and defender of the noble souls,
Day and night, in the moments when I call upon you,
Hear my prayer and give me the peace of the heart,
Health and abundance for a happy life,
You whom I so often call.
