The words of the liturgy, always one of the sources of our prayer, tell us today that when we call on God, God listens. This does not mean that we will always get just what we ask for. We must not imagine that the Lord of the universe is like a button we can press at our whim with the result that we obtain what we want. We do not manipulate God. But God really listens.
God is not like some people we meet whose minds are on something else when we speak, who ignore us, and treat us as being of no account and want to get rid of us. For God cares about us. We are important to him and he is wholly with us when we speak with him. His heart is always open to us whenever we pray, just as we are to be open to others.
