I Have Decided To Follow Jesus Luke 9:57-62 KJV 57And it came to pass, that, as they went in the way, a certain man said unto him, Lord, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest. 58And Jesus said unto him, Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head. 59And he said unto another, Follow me. But he said, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father. 60Jesus said unto him, Let the dead bury their dead: but go thou and preach the kingdom of God. 61And another also said, Lord, I will follow thee; but let me first go bid them farewell, which are at home at my house. 62And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.
The words to this old hymn say it all for the committed Christian: The world behind me, the cross before me; No turning back, no turning back. Though I may wonder, I still will follow; No turning back, no turning back. Though none go with me, still I will follow; No turning back, no turning back. Make no mistake about it; the road for the Christian to travel in his walk by faith can at times be both difficult and joyous. Then there are those times we feel like we are standing still, nothing is happening. There are times of trials and tribulations that God uses to refine us like fine gold, in them we mature and grow but they can sure be painful. Then there are the mountain top experiences where we experience pure joy as He blesses us beyond belief. Through all of it we may wonder "God what are you doing?" We seek to understand the "why's" of God's ways and search out His reasons. Isaiah 55:8-9 KJV - 58for my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD 59for as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.
Jeremiah 29:11 KJV - for I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.
The truth is through all of what we go through as followers of Christ; God is searching our hearts and looking for our faithfulness because what really matters to God is the attitude of our hearts. Jeremiah 17:10 KJV - I the LORD search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.
Whatever you are going through today, know God is there searching your heart and molding it so that you can walk with Him for eternity in a place He has made especially for you and everyone He has called to become His children. This time we spend on this earth is our training ground to become sons and daughters of the Almighty God of creation.
I understand the pain of going through sickness, the pain of losing a love one, the pain of being treated unjustly and suffering. All of these things are hurtful and some severely so, but the end result for those who stay faithful and continue to follow Jesus will be an eternity of joy. We will never know sickness or sorrow again, never want or need again, never have to worry about what will happen tomorrow because we will have our Father reigning from His throne and sin will have vanished away taking all of its curse with it.
Revelation 21:2 KJV - and I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.
Revelation 3:12 KJV - him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, which is new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God: and I will write upon him my new name.
It doesn't matter what you are going through today. It is only a temporary condition for the day is upon us when we will all sing a new song. We will all begin our new lives as sons and daughters of the almighty God. We shall all know indescribable joy as we serve the one who made it all possible when He laid down His life for us. Until then be faithful and keep singing:
The world behind me, the cross before me No turning back, No turning back!
