Hi,

I’m looking for info on the Johnston and Nimmo families. I’m descended from Lettie Mae Johnston, and am interested in any info about her ancestors/family.

Thank you!

Heather,
Lettie Mae Johnston's parents were Moses Artillus Johnston and Mary Elizabeth Nimmo. Moses was known as "Tilly" and was the younger brother of my great grandfather, John Henry Johnston. I don't have much info on the Nimmo family but I have a good deal on the Johnston line back to John Johnston b. 1810 in KY. What are you looking for exactly? Do you have Nimmo data to share?

janice and heather, i'm directly related to the nimmo's through the swift line. my great aunt married a nimmo and had children. I have stories thorugh my uncle, ed rider, about his cousins the nimmos. i can share that info with you, but i missed the emails that you two have been writing so i'm not sure if youre looking for the johnstons or the nimmos.

Hi, Gina! I haven't heard further from Heather so not sure what she's looking for. I'm descended from the Johnston-Alford line, Mary Elizabeth Nimmo would have been a great aunt by virtue of her marriage to my great grandfather's brother Moses Artillus. However, I was intrigued by your reference to being a descendant via "the Swift line." Do you have any record of Mary Swift, b: abt. 1810, propbably in KY, d: aft. 1880 in Washington Twp., Webster Co., MO? She was married to John Johnston (my 3x great grandfather) & he mother of Elias S., Eliza A., Mary J., James, Miranda Catherine, Paris C., Terrisa A. and Amy A. Elias S. was the father of John Henry. Thanks! -Janice

Hi Janice,

Thanks for writing. I have info on the Johnston’s only up to 1833, with info about Elias and Margaret. Any other info you have, pictures, stories etc. Would be greatly appreciated.

The only thing I have on Mary Elizabeth Nimmo is that she was listed in the 1880 Dallas Co. census as living with her uncle John Beckerdite at the age of 6. I couldn’t find much else on the Nimmo family beyond that.

Thanks,
Heather

Heather, do you have Family Tree Maker 2005 or an older FTW version? I have a rather large file I can send to you but you can't open it without the software. If you have it, send me an email direct ([email protected]) and I'll send it back to you without tying up this forum. In the meantime, I created a photo file on this site entitled "Johnston Family" that you can look at for pictures of Elias and Margaret's family headstones, etc. You can get some birth & death dates from them also. In a nutshell, Elias was the oldest of 9 children and he and Margaret Cross (his 1st wife) had 6 children. My great grandfather John Henry was the oldest of the 6 and your ancestor Moses Artillus was the youngest. Elias served in the Civil War. After Margaret's death, he married Narcissa Elizabeth (McCurry) Stivers, a widow. They had one daughter Essie L. who died at 14 years of age.

I'll look forward to hearing from you. -Janice

Janice,

The Nimmo's I was wondering about were from Dallas/Vernon Counties.Bessie May Nimmo and Wily J. Nimmo. they had 3 sons and 1 daughter names: Fern, Forrest, Gylyness and Eithel. Now then, you ask me about a Swift relative and I lost the email. Could you email me again on the Swift you were asking me about?

Thanks,

Gina

Hi Gina,
Sorry but I don't have any addiltional info on the Nimmo line. The one Nimmo I have is Mary Elizabeth Nimmo b: 1872, place unk.; d: 1910, Dallas Co., MO. She married Moses Artillus "Tilly" Johnston 21 Jul 1889 in Dallas Co. They had 5 children: Margaret, Irenia J., Jesse, Oscar Paul and Lettie Mae. I don't recognize the names you've listed but perhaps Heather does, as she apparently has a good deal more Nimmo data.

The Swift connection I'm looking for is based on Mary Swift, b: 1815, KY; d: aft. 1880, Washington Twp., Webster Co., MO. She married John Johnston 10 Nov 1831 in Monroe Co., IN. They had 9 children, the eldest is Elias S. Johnston my 2X great grandfather and the youngest was Moses Artillus, as noted above. Mary is my 3X great grandmother and although I've found several Swift family possibilities, I have nothing to connect her to any of them. Do you know her parents' names, their b: and d: dates and places, etc.? Any data would be very helpful, thanks! -Janice
