Columbus P. Williams

Columbus Patterson Williams, 74, a deacon in the Baptist church since he was 17 years old, died at noon Saturday, Sept. 16, 1933, in his home at 422 Cherry St., Springfield of an illness which began when he suffered a stroke of paralysis three months ago.
Mr. Williams, a native of Dallas County, was formerly a judge of the Dallas County court and was widely known here.  He was a farmer here and worked as a carpenter in Springfield.
Church work was his chief interest.  Besides his long service as a deacon, Mr. Williams had served as a Sunday School teacher, and was superintendent of the Mt. Pleasant Sunday School in this county for many years.  He joined the Grant Avenue Baptist Church upon moving to Springfield and was elected deacon there, serving until the time of his death.  He was a member of the Modern Woodmen of America.
Mr. Williams is survived by his wife, Mrs. Cordelia Williams, of the home; seven children, Mrs. Nell M. Elsey and Hosea Williams, of Springfield, Mosea Williams of Seattle, Wash., W.P. Williams of Willow Springs, Mrs. Paul Newhouse, Frontier, Saskatchawan, Canada, Ira L. Williams of Seattle, Wash., and Mrs. J. Lynn Drummond, Warrensburg; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.  Two brothers also survive Mr. Williams.  They are G.B.M. Williams and R.H. Williams of Charity.
Funeral services were at 11:00 Monday morning in the Grant Avenue Baptist Church, Springfield with the Rev. T.H. Wiles, pastor, officiating.  Burial was at Mt. Pleasant cemetery in this county.
