Mercury and Venus are now both in lively Leo. Due to its retrograde cycle,
Mercury remains in showy Leo until early September. This extended visit gives us
time to project our ideas in ways that are fun for all. We take pride in our
words, but must guard against a tendency toward arrogance. Enthusiasm for
learning is as important as our desire to teach what we know. Today, wordy
Mercury and sensual Venus are opposed to Chiron, the wounded healer. Strive to
overcome pain that could get in the way of pleasure.

Seasons of the Witch - Ancient Holidays
And some not so ancient too!
Sts Peter and Paul/Elegba -Midsummer and St Petertide are the favorite seasons
for "rush-bearing"in England: rushes or new-mown hay are brought in to be laid
on the floors of churches. In northwestern England, rushcarts with towering
flower-bedecked loads of plaited rushes are the focus of processions.
Good Day to you, you merry men all
Come listen to our rhyme
For we would have you not forget
This is Midsummer time
So bring your rushes, bring your garlands
Roses, John's Wort, Vervain too
Now is the time for our rejoicing
Come along Christians, come along do.
Bishop's Castle Rushbearing Song, Shropshire
Photographer Jeffrey Bezom describes the way the festival is celebrated in Poroa
de Varzim in Portugal where St Peter is honored as a fisherman. The houses are
decorated with garlands of lights, nautical banners, tinfoil boats and colorful
ribbons. Stages are trimmed with nets, oars and rigging for life-sized
paper-mache Peters in fishing boats. At sunset, the townsfolk, dressed in black,
march to the beat of drums, following an empty coffin draped with flowers and
lace. Some carry candles and others poles topped with large realistic wax heads
representing the beloved dead of the town. Onlookers strew their path with
rushes and mint and thyme. Later, they drink green wine, run about with torches,
dance around huge bonfires and jump through the flames, feast on fresh grilled
sardines and set off fireworks.
Obviously this celebration has acquired some of the aspects of midsummer as well
as acknowledging St Peter's role as the gatekeeper of Heaven. He is often shown
holding two crossed keys. The primula veris is also known as St Peter's wort
because it is said to resemble a bunch of keys. He is also associated with the
yellow rattle and wall-barley which is called St Peter's corn in Germany.
In the Vodou tradition, Elegba is honored on the same day since he is also a
messenger between the two worlds.
This is another day for weather oracles. A French proverb says that if it rains
on this day, it will rain for thirty more dangerous days. Folklorist Alexander
Carmichael who collected folk customs from the Scottish Highlands and compiled
them in a book called Carmina Gadelica records a saying used by fishermen to
predict the weather from the winds on this day:
Wind from the west, fish and bread;
Wind from the north, cold and flaying;
Wind from the east, snow on the hills;
Wind from the south, fruit on the trees.

Life with Mother; A Journey of Love, Death, and Rebirth is a personal memoir of
a family's life-changing experiences when they were faced with the loss of a
dearly beloved mother. Maytorena, a trained counselor, has written an important
and timely book for families and those who care for the elderly at the end of
life. Poignant and direct, the book validates the feelings and experiences of
parental loss. This is a journey of love, death, and personal rebirth and
recovery from grief. Life with Mother offers help to those who are in the
process of caring for a dying parent. It includes tips and suggestions for
seeking out support, maintaining family relationships, and dealing with the
systems-both public and private-that provide the services needed when caring for
a dying loved one at home.
As someone who was a caregiver for my mother, Life with Mother was also about me
and anyone who has assisted an elderly parent who is transitioning from life to
death. If you know someone who is a parental caregiver, Life with Mother will
enable you to be a better friend and perhaps even provide more support. Cate
Cavanagh, social worker and advocate

Goddess For Today: Tesana
Mnarja (Malta)
Themes: Harvest; Light; Fertility; Abundance; Hope; Beginnings; Growth;
Opportunity; Restoration
Symbols: Dawn; Red; Fruit
About Tesana: In Etruscan, Tesana means "dawn." As the first pink rays of
light begin to reach through the darkness, Tesana is there, offering the hope of
a better tomorrow and the warmth of a new day. Through her steadfast
attendance, the earth and its people bear life and become fruitful.
To Do Today: Mnarja is the primary folk festival in Malta and originated as an
orange and lemon harvest celebration. The name Mnarja means "illumination," and
all the ritual fires ignited today symbolically keep Tesana's fertility burning.
So, light a candle this morning at dawn's first light to welcome Tesana and
invoke her assistance. Choose the color of the candle to reflect your goal:
pink for hope, white for beginnings (a clean slate), and green for growth or
restoration. If you like, also carve an emblem of your goal into the wax,
leaving the taper to burn until it melts past the symbol (this releases the
magic).
In a similar prolific tone, the customary food to encourage Tesana's fertility
and continuing good harvests today is rabbit. If this isn't meat you enjoy,
make rarebit instead; this was a substitute for costly rabbits in the Middle
Ages.

Journey Protection Spell
Incense of the day: Honeysuckle
Today's spell is designed to protect you on a journey, whether it is by road,
air, or sea. This could be travel related to your work or simply for your
personal enjoyment. Find an item that represents your mode of transportation.
For example, if you are flying, your symbol could be an airline ticket or a
small model airplane. On your altar, light a white candle to represent safety
and protection. Close your eyes and focus on the image representing your trip.
Hold this image as you visualize a circle of white light around you and the
transport vehicle. In your mind's eye, imagine yourself reaching your
destination safely. Continue to hold the image in your mind, and then imagine
return-ing home again safely.

"Finding your passion is about connecting the dots between your head and your
heart." ~ Maria Marsala
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Stretch out your tent. Pull out the curtains of the entry
to form a welcoming pavilion. Make strong the stakes
and test the tautness of the cords. For your lover approaches.
Tonight, you too will be spread open in welcome love.
Fear not, for love extends across the years and the nations.
Fear not, for your lover is passionate and compassionate,
your lover brings the spirit into your life.
~Isaiah 54:2-7
In mystical literature, the spirit's highest self often appears as the lover,
the beloved one of the heart. Sometimes this lover appears as a God, but
sometimes there is no apparent divinity, just the beauty of human love.
What is the mystery this language embodies? That the soul becomes one with
itself in the great transformation that is life. As we move through our life's
seasons, we meet and marry our inner opposites. We who are outwardly oriented in
our youth become more withdrawn as we mature; those for whom the inner life is
more important are drawn to the outer world. The talkative grow more silent, the
silent more loquacious. Spiritual literature encourages us to embrace our
opposites, to love them passionately and compassionately, for they are what move
us toward wholeness.

"It's work. It's a small idea that becomes a bigger one,
and then where is the language for it?
It's one word at a time. One idea. It's constant revision.
Trying to make it look inspired.
Trying to make it appear effortless. Trying to make it appear comfortable
and exciting and at the same time
revelatory. And that for me is not a question of inspiration.
It's a question of very, very hard, very sustained work."
~ Toni Morrison
