Seasons of the Witch - Ancient Holidays
And some not so ancient too!
July
July was named after the great leader Julius Caesar, who was born in this summer
month. Because the warm weather continues, activity levels are high, even
though the days are beginning to shorten. Consequently, numerous festivals
during this month focus on family, friends, and social interaction.
For magical purposes, July directs our attention to personal growth and
improvements. This includes increasing your knowledge, continuing efforts for
prosperity, creating new ideas and works of art, and also taking time out
periodically to really enjoy yourself. Our society sometimes mistakes
much-needed leisure time for laziness, but this month's energies know better.
Go and have fun, carrying the Goddess with you for a little extra energy.
The energy of July builds on the clarity of June. As we become more aware both
of the creative fire within ourselves, and of the promptings toward greater
awareness that come both from the Archangels and our personal guardian angels,
we become more attuned to the pulse of the Universe and our own part in bringing
about heaven on earth, the awakening of all beings to our true potential as
co-creators with each other and the Divine One.
.Coll--Hazel
This month's tree is the Hazel. Its color is brown, or 'Coll' in the Gaelic
tongue. The letter of our modern alphabet that represents the Coll is 'C'. The
Hazel is associated with meditation, divination, and great magick.
Irish legend states that the salmon swimming near the banks of the river Boyne
ate nuts fallen from the hazel trees along the shoreline, thereby gaining the
mystical knowledge within. The salmon itself is associated with divination,
hard work and perseverance, and is considered one of the most important magickal
animals.
The Hazel is considered a "chieftain" tree; meaning that it is one of the most
important and revered in all of the Ogham, because of its association with
wisdom and enlightenment.
Since July is the ninth month in the Celtic calendar, the Bardic value, or
numerology association, is "wisdom and knowledge". The symbol of the Coll in
the Ogham is presented as a vertical line with four horizontal lines protruding
from the left center. It is also often drawn as a horizontal line with four
equal vertical lines protruding upward from its center.
For those born in the month of July, the Hazel signifies poetic skill, sharp
intuition, wisdom and an affinity for water.

Japan: Fuji, the ancient Goddess of fire and the grandmother of
Japan, is honored with prayers and burnt offerings.
Nepal: Naga Panchami - festival devoted to the Snake-Gods called
Nagas. Snake images are displayed on altars, offerings made at
snake holds, and parades with live serpents crowd the main
streets in many villages.
1975: Day endangered species became internationally protected; a
day to celebrate all the world's creatures. The Convention on
International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and
Flora was signed/adopted on 3/3/1973, but wasn't enforced
7/1/1975.

Everything from the Sun Ritual
Incense of the day: Geranium
Everything we have comes from the Sun. Without its light and heat, there would
be no life on Earth. Use this time of long, hot days to give thanks for all that
you receive. Don't ask for anything, just express your gratitude. Dress in solar
colors of orange, red, and gold. Fill a bowl with things that remind you of the
Sun: chocolate coins covered in gold foil, packets of sunflower seeds, stickers
with happy faces, postcards of astrological art, and so on. Place the bowl on
your altar, and light the biggest gold candle you can find. Name the things for
which you feel grateful. Then say:
Helios and Lugh,
Amaterasu and Sekhmet,
I thank you for your many gifts.
Let me learn to be as generous as you.
Blow out the candle. Keep the bowl by your door and give away its contents to
people who visit your home.

This recipe helps to remove and prevent mold and mildew buildup.
1/2 Cup Baking Soda
10 drops Tea Tree essential oil
10 drops Lavender essential oil
10 drops Geranium essential oil
Combine all ingredients and using a damp sponge or cloth, scrub bathtub and/or
shower.
For serious mildew buildup areas, combine 20 drops of Tea Tree and water in a
spray bottle,
and spray area everyday for 5 days, then 2x a week

Here is how I saw the Goddess:
first of all, there was her flowing hair,
rich and abundant, falling onto her sacred
neck; than I saw the garland on her head,
woven of all the flowers of creation,
delicate as dewy morning, light as foam;
then there was her crown, a little circle
in the middle of her forehead, like a moon
chining whitely there, and from the moon
rose up small serpents, on each side;
and above the moon, ears of corn
reminding us of all the brings to fruit.

Lucius, hero of North African author Apuleius' classic, mocks the goddess in his
youth. In punishment, she turns him into a donkey. In this form, he has
adventures and misadventures, until she finally finds he has grown sensitive
enough to rejoin humanity.
Apuleius' story is all our stories. We find ourselves on earth, spirits
inhabiting mortal bodies. Our task is to somehow find our way back tot he
goddess who put us here. We can spurn our bodies; we can believe ourselves more
spiritual than mere flesh. Or we can live a totally body-centered life, denying
the spirit. Neither is sufficient. To serve the goddess well, we must rejoice in
the earthly temple in which we find ourselves, but we must never forget to
strive toward the realm of spirit. We are both body and spirit, and the goddess
wants us to remember both
