U.S. Independence Day. On this day, the anniversary of the adoption of the
Declaration of Independence in 1776,
the official "birth" of the United States is celebrated by Pagans and
non-Pagans alike. On this day, many patriotic
American Wiccans honor and give thanks to Lady Liberty, and perform magickal
spells and rituals for the benefit
of the country.
The USA, born July 4, 1776, making its zodiac sign Cancer the Crab. Crabs are
interested in security, home, family and food. Crabs can be the most defensive
of all signs if they feel unsafe from the possibility of attack. Although
homeland security is an important issue, most Americans will be celebrating
their "crabhood" by eating at picnics with their families.

About Thmei This Egyptian goddess of law and mother of virtue watches over
human conduct, looking for right action, wise decisions, ethical dealings, and

Heartwings says, "A large, daunting task becomes easy when broken down into
smaller parts."
It was early to mid Spring when we began to discuss selling our house. In our
innocence, the first date we set for it to be on the market was May 1. At the
time we had no idea what we would need to do to be ready for an open house for
realtors and buyers. Sitting down with a realtor to make lists of what we needed
to do opened our eyes and made us realize we had a long way to go.
I wondered how it would ever all get done, let alone be finished by some time
this summer? I kept thinking of the size of the task rather than its components.
Some days I almost broke down and cried because it seemed there was still so
much to be done. Yet despite my despair, with the help of friends we were making
progress. I just had trouble seeing it.
The other day I walked into the kitchen and had a real revelation: Much of what
I had worried would never get done, had already been accomplished. What we
needed to store was packed away, the painting both inside and out was all
finished, and not too much remained to do before we could call the realtor and
have her come to take pictures for display on the real estate web site.
While we have yet not set a firm deadline for selling the house, we grow closer
to the day it will be ready. Before, because I had seen only what needed doing I
felt continually anxious and oppressed. Now I understand that although there are
still tasks to accomplish, we have been and will continue to make steady
progress. This not only gives me hope but also considerably lightens my burden.
May you learn to see more clearly what has been done and look upon it with joy.

Hear ye hear ye! Welcome to the Moonspell Faire!
Crowds are converging upon the great gates and they are about to open! Come
witches and wizzes and magic-a-makers, come lovers and poets and movers and
shakers! Come healers and psychics and artists and crafters, come stitchers and
weavers and givers of laughter! Come counsellors and actors and teachers and
muses, come dancers and jugglers and writers and schmoozers! Come sisters and
daughters and grannies and mothers, come give, come receive, or exchange with
each other!
"Look look!" cries a child as the great gates swing open and the magical
Moonspell Fairegrounds are revealed in all their splendor. Beautiful booths of
every color and design imaginable flank pathways of soft grass lined with
fragrant flowers and plants of every shade of green. Majestic trees are
everywhere, lending their shade and beauty to the scene. Banners fly from the
booths and signs announcing their wares. Dotted throughout are small theatrical
stages and gathering places, with grassy areas for seating... and an occasional
rustic inn where delicious foods are prepared and served. Heavenly scents fill
the air of magical oils from the potioners booth, or cinnamon rolls from the
baker's, or sweet fragrances from the flower lady. Beautiful music can be heard
and now and then the pealing of faery bells. Was that an elf peering at you
from behind that bush and quickly disappearing? The earth spirits are here too.
And if you happen to be at the Faire on a full moon night, you might have the
great good fortune to see the faery procession go by. Just inside the great
entry gates of the Faire there is an altar, a sacred shrine where anyone can
stop if they wish, to consecrate their visit, make an offering to the Goddess,
and ask for what they need and wish for, say a prayer or cast a magic spell...
At the Moonspell Faire we can receive or give, trade or sell. All is
accomplished in a spirit of free giving and joyful receiving. Our hope is that
some day all that is given at the faire is given freely, without price. In the
meantime we are flexible, and accept what resources are available to us in this
mad and beautiful world of ours. Perhaps you have come with a skill or talent
or item you seek to give to someone who needs it. Perhaps you have come with a
need or a wish or a desire. Perhaps you have come to exchange your offering in
trade or for monetary support. All is acceptable at the Moonspell Faire. You
can browse the booths and seek your heart's desire...or you can take up
residence in a booth, or a gathering place, on a stage or any other appropriate
spot, and create a beautiful display of your work for all to see or hear or
taste or touch or smell.
Here is how it works.
Moonspell Faire is a virtual giveaway and marketplace site. Your transactions
are accomplished by posting and reading messages, as well as responding to those
that interest you. To make the process as simple and accessible as possible, we
ask that you title the subject line of your posts as follows:
There are five categories you can choose from for typing into your subject line:
OFFER, REQUEST, RECEIVED, GIVEN, and HAGGLE. There are three subcategories:
Giveaway, Trade, and Monetary Exchange. If you are offering a service or item as
a Giveaway, then in your subject line type OFFER, G. If you are offering as a
trade, type OFFER,T. If you are offering for money type OFFER,$
The same method works for the second category of Requests. Under Requests you
can post items or services that you are in need of or wish for. If you are

something for pay, would be willing to lower their price, or take a trade
instead. Perhaps you are seriously in need of something offered for pay, but
are unable to give back right now, and you want to see if a giveaway can be
arranged. There are probably a lot of other uses for HAGGLE posts that we
haven't thought of at the moment. Plus we just love the word Haggle. It is the

I am Shekhinah Mountainwater, founding mother of the Moonspells site, where we
have been building women's community since September '04. Shortly after our
circle was begun, I began to think about ways members might be able to help each
other to have right livlihood. So many sisters are trapped in jobs they do not
love, forced to abandon the things they would much rather do with their lives.
Others, like myself, who have taken the leap into doing our chosen work,
struggle to survive. We all have talents and gifts and skills we could develop
or offer, if only we had the support and the opportunity. And we all have
riches and wonderful resources available to us that we can share. It occurred
to me that our Moonspells community could become a genuine economic entity,
within which we could give of our talents and chosen offerings, and receive what
is required for our needs. Then sisters appeared in the circle with talk of
gift economies and ancient matriarchies, and so the Moonspell Faire was born.
It is possible that some day we could have a universal gift economy. It's also
possible that we might be able to create this among our members here. The more
of us participating and giving and receiving, the more possible it becomes. We
have the potential to bypass the pressures and alienations of the
patricapitalist system, and to make a whole new paradigm. Others can pick up
the thread and start their own economic faires or systems. Such groups can link
up with one another and the abundance can grow exponentially. All things are
possible! It starts within each of our hearts with a willingness to honor our
own needs as well as one another's, and a willingness to give for the sheer joy
of giving. There was a time when folks lived this way in the matriarchal and
tribal ways of the world. With the internet we have a fabulous opportunity to
bring it back. And so, dear sisters, we offer to you the magical Moonspell

While our European allies have been dealing with terrorism for decades, we
Americans thought the anger and hatred of reactionaries and fundamentalists
would never touch our lives. English folklore includes two war legends,
probably based on true events, that we can draw on a magical people to help
affect a dangerous world for the better. The legends claim that England's
Witches and Druids stirred up the massive storm that wrecked the dreaded Spanish
Armada in 1588, and then turned back a planned invasion by the Nazis in 1940. We
can gather, raise power, and send out magic to let the world know that the
United States and our allies will not live in fear. To do this, gather as many
other Pagans as you can find. If you're a solitary you can still do this alone.
Go outside if you can, and sit on the ground of your own homeland. Raise an
impenetrable curtain of safety surrounding the coastlines and borders of your
nation. Feel the strength of the cone of power rising around you. When it has
reached its peak, release it into the imagery your mind created.

What would be true independence?: Today we celebrate a festival of birth, of a
people's freeing themselves from tyranny. But each of us remains, in our hearts,
subject to secret tyrannies. Perhaps it is a familiar pain we cling to, or a
habit we know we have outgrown. Perhaps it is a groove worn in our thoughts by
endless repetition, a way of thinking that deadens us to the spiritual
dimensions of our life. These are the tyrants, these are the gatekeepers of our
inner prisons.
Hindu wisdom urges us to focus on the great Goddess Kali, to offer her prayers
that we be freed from such tyrannies. She is a fierce goddess, bearing swords
and wearing a necklace of human skulls. Her tongue juts out at us, and her eyes
bulge. Intimidating as her image is, Kali is a loving mother, for she urges us
to cut our ties to the habits binding us in negativity. Meditate upon her, and
you will find real freedom.
