Current Moon Phase - Waxing
The beginning of a new cycle. Keywords for the New phase are: beginning, birth,
emergence, projection, clarity. It is the time in a cycle that you are
stimulated to take a new action. During this phase the new cycle is being seeded
by your vision, inner and outer. Engage in physical activity. Spend time alone.
VISUALIZE your goals for the 29.6-day cycle ahead. New Moon workings can be done
from the day of the new moon to three-and-a-half days after. The new moon is for
starting new ventures, new beginnings. Also love and romance, health or job
hunting.

Star IQ - Wednesday, July 13
The Moon is in socially graceful Libra, lending an air of pleasantry to our
interactions. The Moon is conjoining expansive Jupiter today, so we need to be
mindful that everything appears better than it is. Additionally, mental Mercury
tensely opposes imaginative Neptune this morning, increasing our tendency toward
self-deception or opening the possibility of being misled by someone else. On
the positive side, however, messages from our subconscious mind arise through
our fantasies, showing us a path to our dreams.

Seasons of the Witch - Ancient Holidays
And some not so ancient too!
Kronia - In ancient times, the Greek month of Hecatombion was also called
Kronion, in honor of the old agricultural god Kronus, whose symbol was the
reaper's scythe. On the full moon (like the full moon of September which is also
a Harvest Moon), the farm year ended with masters and slaves gathering to enjoy
a harvest dinner together.
Obon Festival begins - Japanese Buddhist festival to honor the departed souls
who return and share a life with us during these days. It is also called the
Festival of the Lanterns, because of the colorful paper lanterns light the way.
On the last day, the souls of the dead return and are given food offerings,
accompanied by a silent, gliding circle dance, the bon-odori. Spirits with no
relatives are honored with little boats bearing paper lanterns which are set
afloat on the Tide of Returning Ghosts to drift out to sea. (Also celebrated in
some places on Aug 13-15.)
School of the Seasons
Remember the ancient ways and keep them sacred!

CLEANING
Just when I thought I saw it all,
you amazed me once again;
bringing more things out for me to do
more washing, more cleaning,
more projects left unfinished...
all stacked up while I was gone.
The next time I leave you
and go home crying to my mother,
I will call a good cleaning service
and charge it to your gold card;
reminding you that when I leave,
I take the credit cards with me!

Goddess For Today:  Scathach
Highland Games (Scotland)
Themes: Sports; Strength; Excellence; Kinship; Art; Tradition; Magic;
Protection; Victory
Symbols:  Tartan (plaids); Celtic Music
About Scathach:  This Celtic Mother figure endows strength, endurance, and the
ability to "go the distance" no matter our situation.  In Scotland, she is also
a Warrior Goddess who protects the land using magic as a weapon, as implied by
the translation of her name, "she who strikes fear."  Warriors from around
Scotland were said to have studied under Scathach to learn battle cries and
jumping techniques (possibly a type of martial arts).
To Do Today:  In Scotland, the second weekend in July marks the gathering of
Scottish clans to revel in their heritage through numerous games of skill,
strength, and artistry (including bagpipe competitions).  If you have any
Scottish or Celtic music, play it while you get ready to energize your whole day
with Scathach's perseverance.  If you don't have the music, for a similar effect
find something to wear with a Scottish motif, like heather perfume, a plaid tie,
things bearing the image of a thistle or sheep, or anything woolen.
To make a Scathach amulet to protect your home, car, or any personal
possessions, begin with a piece of plaid cloth and put some dried heather in it
(alternatively, put in several strands of woolen yarn).  Tie this up and keep it
where you believe her powers are most needed

Moving Forward- The Spiritual Way
By Cate Cavanagh
You may be at the point where you hate how you feel.  You may even hate
yourself, despairing of your life experiences, of poor or dysfunctional
relationships and floundering within the personal darkness that has become your
life. Here you are imprisoned within hopelessness, fear and self-doubt.  You are
lost and wonder what you can do to begin to reclaim yourself, your life, your
soul and your spirit power.  You say you are ready to overhaul yourself and make
a new you or get rid of the old you.  But, are you really ready?  What will it
take to move forward leaving the shreds of what has been your life behind?  In
my series on miracles I offered spiritual exercises to strengthen the resolve to
reclaim the soul.  Now, we get to the calisthenics of change.

The first thing necessary is to get off your pity-pot.  We have all been there
so the first thing to realize is that you are not the only one to have boulders
in the road nor are yours the worse possible.  In recent days, all we have to do
is look at London.  This tragedy could have happened to us or to someone we
love.  Remember the tsunami?  Remember 911?  For every tragedy, many are spared.
A friend of mine is a psychologist who told me of a patient who came over from
Viet Nam in one of those boats.  As she and her family and friends got closer to
the US shore, there was a terrible storm at sea.  Her patient was the only
survivor.  Before her eyes she saw everyone she loved die horribly, drowning in
the sea.   Imagine her grief.  Imagine the stress syndrome she suffers.  In
China, the famine was so bad people ate the bark from trees.  So, the first
thing we have to do is accept that suffering such as this did not select you
personally.  We need to accept, especially today in our new world, that we are
all possible victims to tragedy but, we need to also look at the types of
suffering we indulged within ourselves, propagated by the fear of moving forward
as well as how we may have participated in the continuation of our problems.
This is no easy task.

I often do a self-inventory to access how I have put the past behind me and far
along I am in the recreating of a happier life for myself.  Whereas there may be
karmic debts in play for a lot of things, that does not relieve us of the
responsibility to seek change wherever we can.  We can change our lives but our
lives will never change if we do not actively do the work required.

The first exercise, which is the most difficult of all in my opinion, is
accepting accountability for where you are.  You may be dysfunctional because of
an alcoholic or abusive parent.  The rage and self-doubt of this childhood may
haunt you into adulthood.  But, now that you are an adult, what have you done to
heal yourself of this unfortunate upbringing?  As children we are powerless.  As
adults we are not.  We do have the capacity to decide what of our life
experiences we wish to keep and those we wish to get rid of because they serve
no purpose or get in the way of our happiness.  As adults, we need to look at
how long we allowed the fear, anxiety and self-doubt to torment us, crippling us
into inaction.
The moment you say "Enough!" you have taken the first step to accountability and
freedom.

My father was an alcoholic.  In his drunken rages he would often tell me how I
was stupid, that I would amount to nothing and that I knew nothing.  I fought
this at the time but, as I got older, I confronted him verbally.  Our fights
could be heard in the whole neighborhood.  But, in order to prove to myself I
would not be stupid, I applied to college and attended on a full scholarship.  I
worked while in college so he would not be able to say I was dependent on him.
Although I lived at home while attending college, I was financially responsible
for myself.  Okay you say, how was I accountable in this situation you may ask.
I realized I lived in this unhealthy environment longer than I should have.  I
stayed because of love for my mother and yes, for my father.  I stayed and
suffered the attacks on my psyche because I kept hoping one day my father would
tell me how proud he was of me.  He never did.

This unhealthy relationship with my father affected me internally more than I
realized and it took years of work to establish faith and trust in myself.  I
struggled financially while other friends of mine financially flourished.  What
was the difference?  They had supportive parents that instilled hope and
confidence within them whereas I, hearing the childhood voice of my father,
never felt confident going for certain jobs.  You see, I felt I was not smart
enough, no matter what I had achieved.

It is now many years and many self-inventories later.  I have come to realize
that most of my challenges were prolonged because I chose not to take action.
Did I realize this at the time?  Of course not.  We often cannot see better ways
to handle our boulders when they are on our path.  In our weakened state, we
would no more successful than Cysiphus who kept pushing a boulder up a hill only
to have it roll back down again, over and over again.  But we are talking about
moving forward and in order to move forward, we must look back and see what
options we might have taken in order to see that there are always options and
choices available to us.  The second thing we must do is be willing to look for
new options as we move forward on our journey that is the new life we will
build.

Do you have overwhelming credit debt?  I did too.  If your debt is up because
you were frivolous, choose not to be frivolous any longer.  If you are in debt
because you needed those cards to literally survive, look at those choices that
led you to financial despair.  Did you not complete high school leaving you to
work minimum wage jobs?
Did you choose to rent an apartment beyond your means?  Have you become disabled
with restricted resources?  I realized I had participated in the circumstance
that led to my disabling condition for example.  I worked with paraplegics who
were also mentally retarded and psychiatrically impaired.  This one day I was
assigned to house duty to stay with a resident who was suffering multiple
seizures.  With many seizure victims, incontinence is an outcome of the seizure.
The resident I tended was an extremely obese but wonderful man.  He had a gran
mal seizure, followed by feces incontinence.  I put him in the lift and got him
into bed where I proceeded to give him a bed bath.  He held onto the rail as I
rolled him on his side to care for him.  Suddenly, he lost his grip and all 350
pounds of him fell onto my hands, forcing both of my thumbs backwards to my
pinky fingers.  How was I accountable for this incident that led to my disabling
condition?  Because he was obese, his plan stated that two people were to work
with him.
We were short staffed that day and I called for assistance that did not come.
Since I believed strongly in preserving the dignity of the individual, I chose
to not have him sit in his own feces for an indefinite amount of time.  Noble
reason for sure but, the result was Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy which attacks
the whole nervous system over time and from which many have died as a result of
the afflicted central nervous system becoming impaired.  What did I choose to do
afterward?  Notice I said choose- having determined my role in this incident, I
chose to work on self healing.  The result is I have moved forward from being
totally unable to use my hands and arms effectively to the resumption of chores
on my little farm and being able to write again.

Going back to debt, we can continue to live in poverty trying to pay off that
debt or make the undesirable but possibly necessary choice to declare bankruptcy
in order to better survive until other options enter our awareness.  I am not
ashamed of having been poor in my life nor am I ashamed of having to declare
bankruptcy in order to survive at one point in my life.  Poverty also impairs
self-esteem.  It makes us feel unworthy and ashamed.  As long as we allow these
feelings to continue, we are actively participating in further failure and
calling unto ourselves situations that will continue these destructive feelings.
The same can happen with a disability.  A disability forces us to look at how
our lives are changing.  Depression and anger part of the disability mental
cycle as is sudden income loss.  If this has happened to you, file for whatever
entitlements you can receive and be persistent rather than wallow in self-pity
and despair.  If you think you are entitled to Social Security, file right away.
Look at other survival options such as Public Assistance.
Be assertive and always look at options, even if it means rooming with a family
member or a friend, there are always options.

Who is first in your life?  By necessity, everyone around me had to come first
so I understand the responsibility of being a caregiver very well.  Sometimes we
cannot share responsibilities with others for one reason or another but, we can
know that our caregiver situation was a choice we make (or an option) for
whatever the reason was.  If you are a caregiver however, you must find time to
cater to yourself.  Go to a movie with friends, take that long, soaking bath,
get up early and take a stroll as often as you can.  Pray for strength.  These
are all options for the soul we can choose to make while we meet our
responsibilities whatever they may be.  We can stay centered amidst chaos if we
choose to control the chaos by making time for ourselves.

Moving forward is not a short cut to happiness nor is it easy to begin.  I can
tell you, however, that once I began moving forward I was able to see
alternative choices more easily.

Keep in mind, being conditioned into self-doubt and low self-esteem and fear can
become a comfort zone.  The fear of failure can immobilize us into inaction.
Look at your fears and begin by deciding which one you are going to get rid of
first and then go down the line until you have mastered them and your perception
of your life.

When it gets too hot in the kitchen, just get out!  Move forward into the
exciting world of self discovery and change.  It may not be comfortable at first
but the effort is definitely worth it.

Protection Charm Sachet
Incense of the day: Sage
When feeling threatened or intimidated by others or for reasons unknown, prepare
and use this charm sachet immediately. It may be carried on the person, put into
a handbag, or placed in your
living room or bedroom to ward off malevolent energies. It is also helpful to
those susceptible to attacks of nervous energy or prone to fragile emotional
states. Cut a square of red cotton cloth, and in the middle of it place a pinch
of white pepper, a portion of sage, a little garlic powder, a tiny dash of
cayenne pepper, a wee bit of tobacco, a thorn plucked from a cactus, and a red
jasper tumbled stone. Fold the square into a rectangle, and sew up the sides
with a needle and red thread. Dab the four corners and the middle of the charm
bag with basil oil before you use it as a charm. If troubled by nightmares,
sleep with it under the pillow at night.

Crone's Corner - The Perfect Iced Tea Recipe!
Bring 1 quart (4 cups) of purified water to a boil.
Add 1/3 cup of loose tea blend to a muslin bag
Stir and let stand for at least 5 minutes
Keep at room temperature and server over ice when ready to serve.
Makes 2 quarts.
1/3 cup (of loose tea) may sound like a lot, but you must account for the
melting ice in your glass,
so it is a bit stronger but will mellow out as the ice melts down.

Generosity finds joy in the abundance of giving. ~Jackie Woods
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In the beginning, the air and land were not separate, nor
were masculine and feminine split apart. All was one, like
an egg, full of potential and without limits. But slowly
earth, being heavier, settled out of heaven. At first it
floated about on the air, like a fish swimming near the
surface of the water, but finally it formed entirely and sank
beneath the heavens.
~Nihongi, Japanese Scriptures
In Japan, this is the great festival of Bon or O-Bon, the day of the dead, who
have returned to that invisible and formless world that proceeded creation.
Before the festival begins, all homes must be ritually cleaned. Then, a
welcoming feast brings back the souls of the departed; a procession to the
graveyard wakes them, then a torchlight procession leads them back home, where a
feast is spread out. At these banquets, poets traditionally praised the sensuous
beauties of the world, so that the dead could remember again their days on
earth. Dances to honor the ancestors are performed by young women. Finally,
gifts are offered to the dead, and they are sent back to sleep again in the
graveyards. Those who died with no remaining relatives are honored with boats
carrying paper lanterns, which are set adrift on rivers and lakes.
In the flourishing time of summer, such a festival is a good reminder of the
inevitable end of all life. When the roses bloom, the tomatoes ripen red in the
sun, and the air is full of fragrance ad song, it may seem that winter lives on
another planet. In happy times, too, we can forget that pain is as much a part
of life as joy. The wisdom of Japan reminds us of death in the midst of life
and, conversely, of life in the midst of death.

ordinary magick, the principle that the mundane and the Divine are not separate,
but peacefully coexist in all things. Know Mother Earth as the ultimate healer,

we need to do is trust our innate wisdom.
