starting new ventures, new beginnings. Also love and romance, health or job

Star IQ - Wednesday, July 20
As the Moon moves through status-seeking Capricorn, it picks up energy from the
fading opposition between Mars in Aries and Jupiter in Libra that accelerated
the past few weeks. We experience a last flash of this powerhouse, but now we
want to put it to work. A tense half-square between the nicest planets, Venus
and Jupiter, reminds us that it's not easy to recapture the grandeur of the
past. Nevertheless, a similar half-square between impulsive Mars and electric
Uranus tempts us to take risks unnecessarily.

Seasons of the Witch - Ancient Holidays
And some not so ancient too!
St Margaret - Famous in the medieval ages as a saint for women (she was one of
the voices speaking to Joan of Arc), she has faded off the church calendar,
probably because of lack of evidence for her existence. She is called Marina in
the East. There's also a Saint Pelagia, whose nickname is Maragarito.
Both Marina and Pelagia mean sea. The name Margaret itself derives from the
Greek word, maragarites, meaning pearl. These names link Margaret to the great
Sea-Mother known under many names including Mary, Marina and Miriam. Pelagia is
one of the names of Aphrodite in her aspect as the goddess of the sea. And July
is the month of a Greek festival celebrating the wedding of Adonis and
Aphrodite.
Margaret's story is similar to that of many virgin martyrs. She's said to be the
daughter of a pagan priest at Antioch who rejected the advances of a prefect who
then denounced her as a Christian. She suffered many ordeals, including being
swallowed by Satan in the form of a dragon, but she caused his belly to burst
and stepped forth unharmed. She was invoked by pregnant women for protection
from the dangers of childbirth and for those who were dying for escape from the
Devil.
Margaret is often represented standing over a dragon, like other saints,
including Martha (whose feast day falls on the nearby July 28th). The Dragon
Project researchers believe the image of slaying the dragon, which is always
accomplished with an iron pole, has something to do with earthing energy which
is floating about loose and might hurt the crops or the animals.
The Chinese say that the dragon is thunder (and this is the time of
thunderstorms), a creature of the waters who rests in pools in the winter and
rises up as the rain in the spring. The dragon is a symbol of the force
operating beneath the surface of the earth which emerges at the proper time.
Given the association of Margaret with water and the time of the year at which
she is honored (the height of summer), it is possible that the dragon is really
a sea-serpent. Perhaps when Margaret strikes the ground with her iron staff, she
brings forth a life-giving spring or calls forth the flood waters of the Nile.
The wheatfield poppy supposedly sprang from the blood of the dragon she slew.
Long before, it was dedicated to Diana and Demeter as the source of healing
sleep and death. St Margaret's flower is the Virginian dragon's head.
Her feast day was sometimes seen as the start of the dog days, as in this
mnemonic: Margaret is the dog's mouth, Laurence (Aug 10) brings his tail.
St Wilgefortis or St Uncumber - Like St Distaff, whose feast day follows the
Twelve Days of Christmas, she is a fictitious saint. Legend says that
Wilgefortis was a daughter of the King of Portugal who did not wish to marry.
When her father tried to press marriage upon her she prayed for help and
sprouted a copious beard, which drove all prospective suitors away. Her name
Wilgefortis may be derived from Virgo Fortis (Mighty Maiden). She is also known
as Liberata, Livrade, Kummeris and Uncumber (in England) and invoked by women
who wish to rid themselves of troublesome husbands or importunate suitors. Rago
says you can achieve the same thing by picking parsley at dawn and wishing aloud
for release.
Her story and feast day may derive from the stories of the Corinthian Aphrodite
who grew a beard and impregnated women.

SILENCE
All through the convent halls,
there is only...silence.
even the sound of quiet footfalls
on their way to prayers,
are barely heard.
I chose this silent, isolated place
still in heartbreak's throes...
fleeing from your voice, your face;
but now I think
I shall go mad.

Goddess For Today: Hina
Moon Day (United States)
Themes: Moon; Communication; Cycles; Mediation
Symbols: Lunar (silver/white items or any corresponding plants/stones); Coconut
About Hina: This Tahitian Goddess is the Lady in the Moon who shines on us with
her changing faces. As the dark moon, she presides over death. As the waxing
moon, she is the creatrix who made people from clay and the moon, her home. As
the full moon, she embodies a mature woman's warrior spirit. As the waning
moon, she is the aging crone full of wisdom and insight.
According to tradition, coconuts were created from the body of Hina's lover, an
eel god, after he was killed by superstitious locals. She also governs matters
of honest communication, and when properly propitiated, Hina sometimes acts as
an intermediary between humans and the Gods.
To Do Today: On July 20 in 1969, American astronauts visited Hina in person,
landing on the moon's surface and exploring it. In spiritual terms this means
taking time to explore the magical nature of the moon today. If the moon is
dark, it represents the need to rest from your labors. If it is waxing, start a
new magic project and stick with it so the energy grows like the moon. If
Hina's lunar sphere is full, turn a coin in your pocket three times, saying
"prosperity" each time so your pocket remains full. If the moon is waning, start
taking positive action to rid yourself of a nagging problem. Eat some coconut
to help this along by internalizing Hina's transformative powers.

Heartwings Love Notes 166 Figuring Out What to Do Next
Heartwings says, "When you don't know what else to do, just ask for help."
From the time I was a child I have had to deal with the remnants of former
enthusiasms. Whatever projects I took up, I always acquired more of what I
needed than I could use. Inevitably my interest in the project would wane yet
the piles of unused material would not. I never seem to learn my lesson, because
now I am dealing with all the items Stephen and I collected for our erstwhile
antiques and collectibles business.
While Stephen has always collected and dealt books and post cards, a few years
ago he and I went into the business of buying and selling antiques and
collectibles. All went well until our group shop closed. Although we tried
several other locations, none was as profitable. Finally because our basement
was filled with our unsold stock, we opened a shop there. Over time, and with
more advertising, it might have succeeded better. However, in the meantime we
decided to move.
Closing the shop was simple, finding ways to deal with the accumulation has been
more difficult. To begin with, we had several yard sales. We managed to recycle
a quantity of our personal possessions as well as much of what we had bought to
sell. Still, there is a quantity of our better stock left and we need to find
ways to recoup the investment of our time and money.
I puzzled over this dilemma for a while. Then I decided to turn my problem over
to Divine Providence. My theory is that if I have done the best I can, the
Universe will do its part for me. Now I have given up worrying over what to do.
I have also resolved to be patient. I might as well, because that really is all
I can do. Fortuitously, someone just called who wants to buy some of our
remaining stock. Thank you, Divine Providence, and blessed be.
May you find joyous solutions to all your dilemmas.
Blessings and Best Regards, Tasha Halpert

Tree Spirit Honoring Ritual
Incense of the day: Musk
Today is the Lacuria, an ancient Roman festival honoring the spirits who lived
in trees. This is a time when land was cleared to make way for new fields.
Land-owners wanted to propitiate the spirits and prevent them from interfering
with crop production. Normally a pig would be slaughtered and a ritual prayer
given. To honor the tree spirits in your area make an offering of red wine,
grape juice, or even water to a grove or single tree while uttering: "In honor
of the Lacuria."

Crone's Corner - Trouble Counting Sheep?
Insomnia is a relatively common sleep disorder, affecting about one-third of the
adult population worldwide. Insomnia can cause severe sleeplessness and is more
common in women, but the quality of sleep decreases equally in both women and
men as we age.
Typical symptoms of insomnia include problems falling asleep, waking up
frequently in the night with difficulty falling back to sleep, waking too early
in the morning, and feeling unrefreshed when waking in the morning.
The causes of insomnia are varied. Noise, temperature changes, medication side
effects, jet lag, and a change in surroundings can all cause insomnia, as can
PMS, menopause, menstruation, or pregnancy.
If you suffer from insomnia, try to stick to a routine at bedtime, and go to bed
at the same time every day. Avoid caffeine and nicotine before bedtime, and get
plenty of exercise during the day. A dark room free of noise may also
help-consider buying a "white noise" device if your bedroom is noisy. If you are
having trouble falling asleep, try relaxation techniques like breathing
exercises, meditation, or yoga.

What the Fates foretell will come about.
The very order of the universe obeys
their commands, and so we pray to them:
Goddesses, may you add good destinies
to all you have in store for us.
May our fields be fertile, our herds vast,
and may your sister Ceres wear
great garlands of wheat this harvest time.
~Horace, Hymn for the Centennial
The Fates: they were three spinning sisters, the Greeks and Romans said, who
created the thread of life, one who measured out its length, and one who cut it.
Our fate was not entirely in our hands, for their powers were beyond us. Our
forebears did not believe that individuals could control their own destiny; they
would not coomprehend our superstition that the time of our death is determined
by the amount of exercise we engage in or the number of antioxidants we consume
(or do not consume). No, they were aware that only some aspects of life are
under our control. And the hour and year of our death is not one of those.
Living with awareness that we do not choose nor control every aspect of our
lives is not, however, a morbid or depressinbg attitude. Rather, it frees us to
concentrate on what we can, in fact, control. We can decide where and how to
give our affestions; we can determine what acticities are worthy of our time; we
can decide what values to make our priorities. If we cannot control the time of
our life's ending, we can certainly control how its precious moments are spent.
