Current Moon Phase - Waxing Moon Magick:
The waxing moon is for constructive magick, such as love, wealth, success,
courage, friendship, luck or healthy, protection, divination. Any working that
needs extra power, such as help finding a new job or healings for serious
conditions, can be done now. Also, love, knowledge, legal undertakings, money
and dreams.

Star IQ - Thursday, August 18
.
The Moon is in quirky Aquarius today reflecting our need for independence.
Occasionally we need to detach from highly emotional situations so we can
regroup and get a fix on our position. When the Moon is in Aquarius, we become
better at rationalizing the disconnection from intimacy. In addition, mental
Mercury creates an uneasy quincunx aspect with eccentric Uranus, revving up the
high frequency buzz. This aspect acts like caffeine in that it keeps us awake,
but the problem is that there's no simple way to engage it, express it or ignore
it.

St Helena - On Old British legends say that Helena was the daughter of Old King
Cole and married the British officer, Constantine, who later became Emperor of
Rome, For political reasons, he repudiated her and married Theodora, the
daughter-in-law of the previous Emperor Maximilian. When Helena's son,
Constantine, became Emperor and Christian, she too converted. She sponsored
several excavations looking for the Holy Cross. Supposedly she also located the
crosses on which the good and bad thieves were crucified which means she can be
invoked for help indiscovering thieves.

Circle of Friends
Don't let loneliness hurt your health; reconnect with a family member or old
friend. Studies show
that loneliness can have deleterious effects on your health. Surrounding
yourself with friends and family,
on the other hand, can give your heart and health a boost. Make it a point to
see three or more of your closest
friends and family members at least once each month.

STORM BATTLE
Blue gray storm clouds covered the sun
I see them floating about and getting thicker;
they look threatening and fierce,
ready to destroy us with their storms.
We look small below them and unimportant
they can smush us with cold rain and hail,
frighten us with their thunder
and the spears of the lightnings they send.
I can see behind the clouds!  There are warriors,
blue gray warriors hiding, ready to spring
throwing their spears, pelting us with hail,
flattening the earth so they can rule again.
It must be the Norse warriors... the fiercer ones,
not the bright Valkyries on their flying horses.
Perhaps they are enemies, let us call;
call to the Valkyries to protect us!
Here they come, whirling around on their steeds,
bright hair swirling, battle cries with high notes,
fighting the dark, fierce warriors
who would destroy us with the thunder and hail.
What beautiful armor, white winged horses,
bows and arrows, runes on their armbands...
swoop down so I may ride behind you
let me be a battle-maiden too, serving Freya!
Teach me your battle-cries, paint my face with runes,
proud warriors!  May I be your sister?
Like glittering Brisingamen, the sun shines again,
glowing upon your armor...
The shadow warriors dissipate, the clouds roll away,
the Valkyries have won the battle.
My warrior sisters must fly back to Valhalla,
but they will come for me in the dream-time.

Today's Goddess:   Genetaska
Crow Fair (Montana)
Themes:  Tradition; Unity
Symbols:  Amalgams (any item that mixes different components into a useful,
harmonious blend)
About Genetaska:  Since this festival has become a meeting ground for various
tribes, we
look to Genetaska to make the day productive and celebratory.  As the Iroquois
Mother of
Nations, she not only created human diversity but also maintains the peace
within it.
To Do Today: Since 1918, a great gathering of Native American tribes has taken
place in
Crow Agency, Montana.  Here people meet, dance, and revel in native traditions.
While the
event is hosted by the Crow Tribe, others attend from tribes as diverse as Inuit
and Aztec.  In
keeping with this theme, and to invoke Genetaska's harmony in your life, make
peace with
yourself or someone from whom you've been estranged.  Ask Genetaska to help you
find
forgiveness in your heart.
Also, listen to some Native American music today, or maybe visit a museum that
includes
Native American exhibits to enjoy Genetaska's diversity.  She lives within her
people's artistic
expressions of individuality and vision.
Finally, make a stew that includes squash and corn (two traditional Native
American foods).
Stir the stew clockwise and invoke Genetaska, saying,
"Diversity and harmony, as I eat, abide in me!" The Goddess will mix and mingle
the food to magical perfection.

MONICA SJOO, In Memoria
By Shekhinah Mountainwater
Monica will never be dead.  Her spirit is so present, and so powerful, always.
I first met Monica up in Berkeley about 15 years ago, when she was presenting
her amazing slides showing monuments and sacred landscapes of Europe, as well as
her incredible art.  She was a Titaness... big, blonde and Swedish...  soft
spoken yet passionate... loving, yet fierce in her feminism, her rage against
patriarchal abuses of women, the earth, and the Goddess.  She was a veteran of
the Womanspirit movement, like me, one of our visionary foremothers.  We used to
appear in the same issues of Womanspirit magazine, our first periodical, and so
have shared the task of birthing our movement.  "I'm a vet too," I told her that
day in Berkeley when I went up during her break to give her a big hug and
introduce myself.  Later I wrote a poem for her about how we and others like us
had all agreed before we got born that we would be coming in together this time,
to help bring back the Goddess...that it was time and we knew... that we would
be separated and stationed where we were needed around the planet...that it
would be hard and we would miss and long for each other.  She later wrote and
said she felt the same way.
Monica was a radical in the deepest sense, tapping into the roots of our
collective wisdom and memory.  Her art reflected this, drawing upon the ancient
icons and monoliths left to us by those earlier foremothers.  When she visited
with some of the Goddess women I knew around the US I would get complaints from
them later.  "She's not very social," they remarked grumpily.   Monica was not
into small talk or into "adjusting" or "adapting" to patriarchal ways.  She
would glower and condemn and refuse to act as though everything is really ok or
that we should just be polite and go along with the status quo.  Women I know
were uncomfortable around her because of this, but I loved her for it!
Monica was very concerned that everyone remember that the book "The Great Cosmic
Mother" was co-authored by herself and Barbar Mor.  After she visited me here
for the first time, she went on to New Mexico to meet with Barbara Mor.  Though
they had written a book together, they had never met in person.  Monica came
back from that meeting shattered and overwhelmed.  Barbara was on the streets
with her children, having been thrown off welfare because of the publication of
their book.  The "welfare" people had decided Barbara must not need the $ any
more, now that she had a book out.  In truth, authors make only a tiny
percentage of book sales, and any kind of substantial income is only possible
with a wildly vast best seller such as Harry Potter.   Far from earning a living
from Great Cosmic Mother, Barbara was on the streets.  She was furious with
Monica when they met, thinking Monica was getting all the credit and attention
for a book she had co-authored... travelling around, living a life of privelege,
doing book-related events (actually Monica was just doing her own slides and
art) while she, Barbara, was homeless with her children.
When Monica came back from that experience she said she had no idea there was
such competition and coldness between sisters in America.  Yes, I told her, it's
everywhere here, even in the Goddess movement.  Fortunately she was able to
straighten things out between herself and Barbara, and to win her trust.  She
made sure that Barbara got more space and attention in the next edition of Great
Cosmic Mother.  At succeeding events I witnessed she repeatedly reminded folks
to remember Barbara's participation and to accredit her.
Still, last I heard Barbara is on the streets... and still, I see, the book is
mentioned as Monica's work, and not Barbara's as well.
My heart is aching for Monica.  She was tormented by the loss of her two
sons...one to a car accident and one to cancer.  She was also in great anguish
about what is being done to the earth and what has been done to the Goddess and
to women in this world.  I think these sorrows killed her, far too young.  (I
believe she was in her 50s when she passed.)
We are all so blessed that Monica painted the Ariadne painting that's on the
cover of my book, Ariadne's Thread.  You can see it here:
Not only did she paint it for me, but she ended up sending me the original! "I
usually never do illustrations," she told me in her letter, which arrived from
England with the painting scolled in a mailing tube, "so this must be yours."
Giantess that she was, she usually only did mural-sized paintings.  I wish you
could see the original.  It is much more colorful and rich and powerful than the
photographed version on the cover of the Thread.  It dances deeply with the
opening poem I wrote, also called "Ariadne."  I sent her the poem before she did
the art, and I think it helped to inspire its rendition...
Hail Monica... beautiful sister... so strong...so gifted...so true.  I'm sure
you are with your beloved sons now, free of pain, free to carry on.  I love you
deeply.
Blessed Be,
Shekhinah

Hunter's Feast Ritual
Incense of the day: Eucalyptus
Yesterday was traditionally a feast day for honoring Diana/Artemis in her
huntress aspect. Why not have a traditional hunter's feast for your Pagan
friends this week? The main dish should be some form of meat, preferably venison
if available, as deer are associated with Diana. Vegetarians could create a
veggie loaf of grains and mushrooms. Serve seasonal vegetables and a good hearty
soup such as mushroom or potato-leek, along with a full-bodied red wine like
merlot. For dinner music, how about that Pagan classic "Songs from the Wood" by
Jethro Tull? Or else play something suitably sylvan in tone. Such a meal served
in summer reminds us of the coming winter, when we will eat hearty foods to stay
warm.

Crone's Corner - Forgiveness Meditation
Adapted from "Profound Healing"
Lack of forgiveness on a national level is as devastating as it is on an
individual level. The lessons are everywhere to be seen: bitter battles
are being fought around the world as one nation lashes out against
another and another lashes back. The violence is perpetuated through
endless decades of holding on to anger and rage. Walls are built up and
habits of thinking become so deeply entrenched that forgiveness becomes
an unthinkable concept.
And yet forgiveness is the only path that will clear away the revenge
and rage that feed the escalating violence. We can keep our hearts open
to compassion and forgiveness, and direct our thoughts outward with a
positive intention. Even when we're not able to do anything else, we can
hold individuals or situations in a place of compassion. This simple,
short meditation helps us to keep the energy we project into the world
positive. Perhaps the way to world peace is practicing forgiveness and
compassion, one person at a time.
Learn how:
Imagine a golden light radiating down from above; a light of healing and
compassion and wisdom. I breathe the light in with my breath. The golden
light circulates throughout my body, focusing especially on any area
that needs attention or healing. As my body fills with light it
overflows through my heart chakra. I reach out with this heart energy
and touch the hearts of my loved ones and friends--especially anyone or
anything I'm feeling critical of. As the light expands I imagine
reaching out as a group and touching the hearts of all those in the
world who feel hopelessness or despair or whose hearts are burdened or
cold. We further expand this light, reaching out into the hearts of all
individuals and groups in the world whose power and influence impacts us
all. Finally I visualize lifting the earth up into the Divine's hands
with my prayer that humanity, individually and collectively, come into
harmony with our highest good and the good of the whole.
With our hearts clear and our thoughts compassionate, we can act as a
powerful force in the world. We are all needed in the important work of
forgiveness and healing.

If you love what you do, you'll never work another day in your life. ~Nashti
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
By the ruler's command,
I speak in the solemn presence of the Goddess,
whose praises are heard all the way
to the upper reaches of the Izusu River:
I speak humbly, concerning the offerings
of the harvest fruits, which will be brought here,
to this divine banquet, to be blessed and purified
and presented to the goddess. Humbly I speak.
~Noriko, Japanese Prayer
At this time of year, in many cultures, feasts celebrating the harvests were
held. A typical part of such festivals was the offering of first fruits, which
meant that some portion of the harvest was designated as belonging to the
divine. Sometimes this portion was used to maintain the priestesses or priests
who served the Goddess or God; sometimes it was distributed among those in need;
often it became part of the feast, partaken by all in the community. What
happened to the food after it was offered was not the point; what was important
was the fact that it became, symbolically, sacred.
Our lives would be much enhanced if we would offer part of everything we earn,
everything we are given, to the divine. A drop of wine, spilled on the ground,
reminds us that we are not the owners of what we consume. The earth owns us all.
We would do well to remember that.

Feast
