Current Moon Phase - Waning, Balsamic Moon:
Balsamic: The end of one cycle and the beginning of another.
Keywords for the Balsamic phase are: transition, release, transformation,
renewal, purity. It is the phase in a cycle when you must let go of everything
you have been working on that does not deal with current cycle issues. During
this phase you reflect on the passing cycle and prepare for the new. Trust in
renewal. It is important to separate from others now so that you can clear the
intellect of negativity. LET GO. Become still and meditate.
.
Waning Moon Magick: From three-and-a-half to ten-and-a-half days after the full
moon. From the Full Moon to the New is a time for study, meditation, and magic
designed to banish harmful energies and habits, for ridding oneself of
addictions, illness or negativity.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Star IQ - Friday, September 30
The Moon is in analytical Virgo today, reflecting our desire to do what makes
sense, but other influences encourage us to be more radical. Normally, we would
attempt to contain irrational impulses but this Virgo Moon tensely opposes
electric Uranus, stirring up unconventional and even surprising feelings. We may
not want to trust our emotions now, for they are rather unpredictable. The
uneasiness is increased by the Sun's irritating quincunx with erratic Uranus, so
it's difficult to know where our actions will take us.

If mists in the new moon,
  Rain in the old;
If mists in the old moon,
  - Shepherd of Banbury.
...
The full-orb'd moon, with her nocturnal ray
Shed o'er the scene a lovely flood of day.
- Wheelwright's Pindar, Olymp. Ode X
...
Ye stars and moon, that, when the sun retires,
Support his empire with succeeding fires;
And thou, great Hecate, friend to my design;
Songs, mutt'ring spells, your magick forces join;
And thou, O Earth, the magazine that yields
The midnight sorcerer drugs; skies, mountains, fields;
 ~ Ovid, "Metamorphoses," Dryden's translation.
...
Are you content being so far away
From all the other beings in the universe?
Is it sublime to have an unrestricted view
Of these others?
Do they have their own will? Do you?
And, so, do I?
~ Karen Ley Smith, "Earth's Moon."

The Moon in opposition to Mars,
you are advised to begin nothing of weight that day.

Seasons of the Witch - Ancient Holidays
And some not so ancient too!

September 30
Greece: Festival of Themis - celebration of the Goddess as ruler
of Delphi. Themis is a very ancient Goddess of justice. Oaths
were taken in her name while wearing her sacred purple mantle.
Also, the last day of each month is sacred to the Goddess Hecate
(Hekate). In ancient times, worshippers would leave a "Hecate's
Supper" with specially prepared foods as offerings to Hecate.
The offerings were also gifts to appease the restless ghosts,
called apotropaioi by the Greeks. These offerings are best
prepared for the goddess on the eve of the new moon, to be left
behind at crossroads at night, without looking back.
Celtic Tree Calendar: Gort (Ivy) - September 30 to October 27 -
Magical Associations: Healing, protection, cooperation, exorcism
Voudun: Maitresse Délai
Feast Days of Christian Saints: St. Jerome, child of a rich
pagan family, became a translator of Latin texts of the bible.
After 30 years, he produced the Vulgate translation still used
today.  Patron of archeologists, archivists, Bible scholars,
librarians, libraries, schoolchildren, students, translators.
St. Sophia, name meaning 'wisdom', is described by the church to
be a personification of an allegory: the legendary mother of the
virgin martyrs Faith, Hope and Charity. According to a 2nd
century legend, 3 days after the death of her daughters, Sophia
passed peacefully away as she prayed by their tomb.

Proerosia - This Greek festival for Demeter was held at Eleusis on the 5th day
of the Greek month
of Pyanepsion. The name means "Preliminary to the Ploughing," and it was
probably a grain sowing rite.

October 1

In some Saxon calendars, allegorized by the figure of a husbandman carrying a
sack on his shoulders, sowing corn.
In other old calendars, the sport of hawking is represented.

The month for making beer, wine, cider, because of steady temperature.

Sacred to Goddess Astraea, daughter of Zeus and Themis. She lived among humans
in the Golden Age but when civilization deteriorated she withdrew to the
upperworld.
This is the Irish month of Deireadh Fomhair. The Frankish name, Windurmanoth,
means 'vintage month'. American backwoods: Hunter's Moon. Asatru name: Hunting.
Weather lore of October (Northern Hemisphere): the more bright red berries (haws
and hips) that can be seen in the hedgerows, the more frost and snow there will
be the next Winter.
The second 'Summer' in October is called Indian Summer in America, St Bridget's
Summer in Sweden; in Italy, the Summer
of St Teresa; in Germany and Switzerland, the Summer of St Gall. In England, it
is called St Luke's Summer.
Much rain in October said to correspond with much rain in December. A warm
October makes a cold February.

If October bring much frost and wind,
Then are January and February mild.
~Traditional English weather proverb

In October dung your field,
And your land its wealth shall yield.
~Traditional English proverb
Birth flowers: Calendula and cosmos.
Birthstone: Opal, signifying hope. Said to bring bad luck to those not born in
this month who wear it.

Today's Goddess: Lakshimi
Lakshimi Puja (India)
Themes:  Devotion; Luck; Wealth; Relationships; Prosperity; Love; Harvest;
Autumn
Symbols:  Lotus; Rice; Coins; Basil
.
About Lakshimi:  A favorite Goddess in the Hindu pantheon, Lakshimi brings
devoted love into our lives, along with a little luck and extra pocket change to
help things along.  When called upon, Lakshimi opens the floodgates of heaven to
meet our heart's or budget's needs.
To Do Today: This annual festival celebrates Lakshimi and honors her ongoing
goodness, which manifests in an abundant autumn harvest.
If you are a merchant or store owner, it's customary to appeal to Lakshimi today
for the ongoing success of your business.  You can do this by placing a few
grains of rice, some basil, or a coin in your daily tally sheets.  This neatly
tucks Lakshimi's fortunate nature into your finances.
For those wishing for Lakshimi's luck in love, gather a handful of rice cooked
in basil water (the cooking process adds energy and emotional warmth).  Sprinkle
this on the walkway leading up to your home and your preferred vehicle, saying,
Lakshimi, let true love find its way to my home; "Let me carry luck with me
wherever I roam."
Keep a pinch of this in an airtight container, and carry it with you into social
situations.
It will act as a charm to improve your chances of meeting potential mates.

Money-Drawing Powder
Incense of the day: Carnation
When business is going through a slow period and income decreases, prepare a
money-drawing powder. As a talcum powder for the body after bathing, it draws
money toward you. Sprinkled on business documents and cash registers, it assists
in gener-ating improved activity and profits. Sprinkled on the floor around a
shop, the powder attracts enthusiastic customers. Make this potent powder using
one tablespoon of powdered cinquefoil (five-finger grass), one ounce of powdered
sandalwood, a quarter teaspoon of powdered cinnamon, one teaspoon of powdered
yellow dock, a quarter dram of patchouli oil, a half dram of frankincense oil, a
quarter dram of myrrh oil, and five ounces of your favorite talcum powder.
Powder the herbs with a mortar and pestle before adding the oils and blending
with a metal spoon. Add talcum powder to the combination and mix it thoroughly.
Put the powder in a jar or other glass container. Take it to the altar and
consecrate before use.

Crone's Corner -Fulfilling Your Promises
Promises are merely empty words if they aren't backed up by action.  And
action is generally proceeded first by deliberate resolve, then verbalized
commitment (often to someone besides ourselves) , and finally, a carefully
laid out plan of steps to be taken. Promises that are made, but not kept,
quickly hamper any progress we dream of making. They hang like weights on
our shoulders, reminding us if our weak resolve.
Only actions can fulfill our promises. Perhaps we'd do well to make a
promise, any promise, only for a day. We can always renew it tomorrow.
The additional and unexpected gift is that a promise kept no matter its
magnitude, enhances our self-image. And since we can only live one day at a
time, no promise need be made for longer. All of us can manage to fulfill
one promise, for one day, if we believe in it and in ourselves.
And to this I quote Frances Marion: "Promises that you make to yourself are
often like the Japanese plum tree---they bear no fruit."

"The Goddess Companion"
Money and fame pass like a shower in spring
or like dew on the grass in the morning.
They are there, they glisten, then they pass forever.
Look at that king, so glorious and honored!
Now watch as he dies and cast into dust.
Show mew the kings of the past! All dust!
Give me instead a cave high on a mountain.
Give me my solitude. Let me pursue wisdom.
Give me just that, and I will be happy.
~Chinese Song Of Kuan Yin
What happened to that fashion which, just last year, we could not live without?
The toy that was so irresistible?
The possession that would make our lives perfect?
Previously precious objects form mountains in American garbage dumps. Rulers who
killed to have their way lie in
the same earth as the underlings they sacrificed. What perspective can we have
when we look back at the lives
of those who passed before us! Why can we not bring such perspective to our own
lives today? What do we really
need, what can we live without? What, in the solitude of our own souls, truly
nourishes us?
The beloved bodhisattva Kuan Yin is said to have reached enlightenment through
meditation and prayer of solitude.
In solitude, too, we can begin to disencumber ourselves of this world and its
demands. With Kuan Yin, we can seek
happiness in simplicity.

Feast
