Magical Moonstone

Date: 2005-08-29 By: Ember

Anyone with an interest in stones has probably encountered the lovely Moonstone. It has undeniable appeal, especially for its lunar associations. Moonstone has many wonderful metaphysical properties and its appearance alone inspires tenderness and a soft, loving quality. It brings soothing security and comfort and can be used to promote inner peace. But its mundane aspects deserve consideration as well, and can enhance appreciation of the stone.

When working with a stone, it is useful to know something about its scientific nature: what it’s made of, where it’s found, how it’s formed. Our Mother Earth has many facets to explore and we begin by understanding ?this involves studying an object’s properties on many different levels.

Moonstone is a variety of orthoclase feldspar called Adularia, named for a locality in the Adula Mountains in Switzerland. The word Orthoclase is of Greek origin: orthos meaning “upright?and klasis meaning “fracture?describing the nature of the stone. Moonstone’s soft-looking, pearly sheen, referred to as Adularescence, is caused by light reflecting internally due to thin layer inclusions. The stones can be colorless, white or ivory, slivery-gray or bluish in color. Some specimens have a “layered?appearance while others are translucent, but all will have the distinguishing luster that gives the stone its common name. Some will even have rainbow effects.

The feldspar group is very important. Not a single mineral, but a group of common, rock-forming minerals that all contain aluminum, silicon, and oxygen with varying proportions of potassium, sodium, and calcium. They are the most abundant constituents of rocks, making up about 60 percent of the total weight of the Earth’s crust. Orthoclase is part of the potassium group. Pure feldspar is used in the making of porcelain and as a mild abrasive.

Consider this: Oxygen and silicon are the most abundant elements in the Earth’s crust. Silicon plays the same central role as carbon does in the organic world ?its compounds make up about 87 percent of the rock and soil. This makes Moonstone a very “earthy?gem.

One of the alternative birthstones for the month of June and associated with the astrological signs of Cancer, Libra, and Scorpio, Moonstone is also linked with all the water-signs as it is a stone of comfort and representative of the Goddess. It is associated with lunar energy and is a great stone for women, especially useful for feminine cycles, and is useful for all rhythms of the body. It enhances flexibility and flow in life, easing stress and anxiety for both men and women and it has a balancing effect, especially on emotions and female hormones. Women may find moonstone helpful during the menstrual cycle, especially to ease discomfort and promote regulation. It can be carried, worn, or placed in the pillowcase while sleeping. Men find it useful in connecting with the emotional side of their personality. It is a stone of feeling, especially love.

Moonstone is reputed to be the “traveler’s stone?and may be carried to bring good fortune. I always carry one in my pocket while traveling or wear one as a pendant. It’s also good for stimulating “new beginnings?and for hoping, wishing ?to determine one’s needs instead of wants. It may also be used for the heart and sacral charkas, and to strengthen confidence and composure. In addition, Moonstone is lovely in jewelry, particularly when paired with silver. It’s also a perfect compliment to Full Moon rituals. Surround a candle with a ring of moonstones. Put them in your bath or set them on the edge of the tub. Charge them with moonlight on the night of the full moon.

Moonstone should be relatively easy to find, I have ordered specimens by mail and have found them in a variety of metaphysical and craft stores ?particularly nature shops. I found a large bag of them marketed as an educational tool for children for just a few dollars at a local campground. Often state and national park gift shops will have bins of tumbled stones where you can choose your own and pay a price per bag; many times there are moonstones in these collections. Use care when handling and storing Moonstone; it is slightly harder than glass but not as hard as quartz and can be easily scratched.

Whether you follow a path of nature spirituality or simply have a passion for lovely stones, bringing Moonstone into your life is sure to add a beautiful, magical quality to every aspect on levels both mystical and mundane.

Gems For Dreamers

Moonstone

Moonstones, gems named for their resemblance to the familiar glowing orb in the night sky, offer us more than mere beauty. Their association with moon goddesses throughout the world may explain why moonstones' qualities seem to reach out to assist all those who find themselves under the moon's light, from travelers and those at sea to lovers and dreamers. Throughout the world, moonstones have been imbued with mystical properties that extend the fabled powers of the moon into daylight hours.

In India, they are thought to give sweet, beautiful dreams by night but have gained a reputation for enhancing intuitive sensitivity and spiritual vision of the "third eye" at any time of the day. This connection to the subconscious was also recognized in the Middle Ages in Europe, where it was believed that gazing into a moonstone would cause you to fall into a deep sleep that allowed you to see the future. This extends to the power of fertility, where in Arabia, women sew moonstones into their garments to enhance their fertility. This association with fertility even extends to the fertility of crops, which is why moonstone amulets have been seen hanging in fruit trees before harvest. To further enhance the power of your moonstone, try putting them outside in the light of the full moon.

Moonstones, sometimes likened to a raindrop or tear, have long reminded people in Asia that the moon cannot be seen during the rain, just as it is difficult to see through our tears. By bringing love and abundance into our lives today and helping us to see the future, moonstones allow us to bring the hope of all good things into our lives.

Daily Om~

MOONSTONE:

A true balancer of emotions. Besides normal heart placement, can be used on will center to link to higher consciousness with protection. Specifically provides synchrony with moon-based cycles (menstrual and biorhythm). In some instances, they are known to help childless women conceive and help relieve some skin related illnesses.

I use crystals as elixir - have them, and some moonstone, in my water filter system,  and my whole family drink the water every day.

My wife was suffering from fibroid cyst and had been operated on,  but did not manage to get rid of all the growth.  After taking moonstone elixir for a year,  the doctor was amazed to find her cysts shrunk in size.

A  sister of a friend of mine used to sell cooked food as a hawker and suffered from rashes in her hands after  prolonged period of handling the mee,  (local version of spaghetti).  I asked her to wash her hands with moonstone elixir and it worked.  She could not conceive for almost 10 years after giving birth to her first child,  a son.  I gave her a moonstone ring to wear and a year or so later I met her and was told that she had just given birth to a baby girl.  You would call that coincidence,  but I find that it works.

When I travel overseas,  I have a few moonstone nuggets tucked away  in my luggage.  Said to protect me especially when crossing waters.

Blessings

Simple way of preparing an elixir is to place the stone in water over-night,  for beter results over three nights.   Some said distilled water is the best to be used for maing elixir.   If you can get spring water or river water which is not polluted,  that would be fine.  Try to use glass or porcelian container,  and avoid plastic and metal.

If you need to drink the elixir,  make sure that you cleanse the stones and get rid of the commercially applied coating of wax that  makes  the stones shining.  To be sure,  before you use the stones,  soak them in water over five days and discard the contaminated water.

There are methods of using flowers and herbs to combine with stones to create the elixir.  I remember a good combination with moonstone is  Pomegranate flower.

Blessings

MOONSTONE (ADULARIA)

Mined in Australia, India, and Sri Lanka, moonstone is found in shades of green.  A star and cat’s eye moonstone are available. The name is derived from the fact that moonstone has a pearly moon-like luster.

Cayce said moonstone brings peace and harmony and pulls the individual towards spiritual things. It has long been used in agriculture and as a protection against insanity, cancer, and dropsy. Psychic gifts develop, and one has increased access to the subconscious mind with moonstone. Moonstone has long been associated with the moon. Many are aware that the moon has various effects on our lives.

1 Q How is moonstone used for healing and spiritual growth?

“The activities of moonstone are centered on the abdomen, spleen, pancreas, pituitary, and intestinal tract. Abdominal ulcers are weakened, abdominal walls are realigned, and digestion of food improves. Any diseases that may cause ulcers can be treated with moonstone. The vertebrae are realigned, especially when the elixir or gemstone is used in con-junction with breathing exercises. The gemstone can be placed on the vertebrae. Moonstone is of considerable aid during the entire birthing process. Moonstone should be considered for use with all female problems from pelvic disorders to ridding the body of toxins. On the cellular level, there is tissue regeneration of the skin’s surface, and pituitary gland secretion is enhanced.

“This is a powerful elixir for working with the emotions, particularly those that create anxiety and stress, and that are associated with the mother. Tension in the abdominal area is released, partly because the abdominal chakra is opened. All the emotions are integrated so that one becomes truly sensitive. Then, one leams to listen and negotiate from that which the individual may truly have to offer. Psychokinetic and clairvoyance also develop.

“This is definitely more of a female stone with feminine qualities accentuated. The make-up of moonstone parallels the activities, in its change of color, of the abdominal lining and the abdominal chakra. The brow and crown chakras are also activated. The astral and emotional bodies are aligned, the meridians and nadis are strengthened, and moonstone can be worn over the solar plexus, medulla oblongata, or on the ring finger. Atomization with this elixir is effective, especially to the abdomen, medulla oblongata, and ring finger. Placement inside a conical structure for two hours, especially during a full or new moon, amplifies the properties of moonstone.?/SPAN>

I have received numerous reports of women who have used this elixir to good effect for a wide variety of female problems. Moonstone and pomegranate flower essence are quite valuable in this area.

Diamond, these posts are just wonderful! Thank you so much for sharing with us! I have a question? Is rainbow Moonstone any different in it's qualities? Or is most Moonstone of this type? And would a pendant of Moonstone and Amethyst be effective? I really, really APPRECIATE you! Have a most magickal day! Damage

Moonstone comes in a variety of colour - white, grey, pink and blue (rainbow).  I shall discuss in detail the different colours of  nstone later.  At this point,  for healing of woman related sicknesses - such as infertility and womb-related problems - pink is the most suitable.  White is more all-rounder,  whereas blue, which is most attractive, especially with rainbow inclusion,  is more spiritually uplifting.   I have never liked grey which has a heavy and dense energy but it has its own specific purpose.  Then,  there is another rare variety - the cat eye version.....

Some stone lore has it that Moonstone could help reduce weight - you carry a moonstone in your hand,  and look at yourself in the mirror,  preferably in nude,  in slimmer build.

Blessings

Almost forgotten -  both moonstone and amethyst pendant help in developing our spirituality - both helps in developing our third eye chakra.   I shall discuss amethyst, one of my favourite stones,  in another post ^^.
