Hi! Here is another piece I wrote for my old group on divination, hope it is useful!

Divination, what is it, and how does it work…the subject for today. To explain this, I will have to quickly lay down a foundation to build upon. I will try to make this part brief, as it really is a whole subject unto itself. Everything in life is made up of electromagnetic energy, this energy must do something or be contained in something, as the nature of energy is the opposite of stagnation, it must vibrate and move to exist. All things in life are an interaction of electromagnetic energy patterns.

Each pattern is for the most part unique and it’s own, though it must interact with the whole to exist. Any energy isolated completely, will be broken down eventually and transformed into something else. Nothing can exist completely unto itself and stay itself. Energy may die, but will never cease to exist; it will merely disperse, or become something new. Now, in relationship to divination, let us look at how this works. We will use the Tarot as an example. We are sitting down, doing a reading; we focus our minds toward our question…”Will I make it into the school of my choice?�?OK, now the energy is going out in an instantaneous search throughout the universe, just like a search in your computer search engine. It is now finding all of the energies connected to you and this question. Energy will always go to where it is directed, and because it was formed as a question, it will return to you.

 Such things as your grades, your current financial situation, your personality, staff involved, etc., all are looked at, and the energy pattern they are forming as a whole. Perhaps while all of this is happening you shuffle the cards and continue focusing on the question. Suddenly the information comes through, and you stop to lay down the cards. I personally have a different way of doing this, but this is how most people do it. Now, you open your mind to the incoming information, becoming the medium for the information to relay to, and view the patterns the cards have formed. At this point you and the cards are connected, and your mind translates the information given you in your mind, and that given to you in the cards, in combination with one another. Depending on how “clear�?you are depends on the accuracy of your interpretation of the information given. If you had a lot of other thought during the reading that had nothing to do with your question, this will cloud the reading.

If you are stressed, have a headache, etc., your ability to read the universal language could greatly impair the truth of the reading. Also, if you are biased in the situation, you can interpret the symbols off of your own hopes or fears. Relax, clear your mind, rely on what you know of the Tarot, the symbolism before you, and do not analyze it at first. Just allow the information to speak to you, be a vehicle for the information, not the driver. Any attempts to control the situation will end in a tainted reading. It is best at this point to record the information as it comes to you, on tape or by pen. Do not look at it and it’s meaning yet…then translate, do this for each card. Then combine the total results to see and understand the whole picture. Now realize this is NOT what WILL happen, this is only what will happen if you continue to follow the exact path you are following, and do not make any alterations.

The energy will only translate to you the current factors involved, this is a guidepost, and certainly not written in stone. The idea here is to realize you are in control of your own destiny, not the victim or play toy of the universe. You helped to create many of the factors involved, and now knowing what the situation is, you can make alterations and adjustments to guide things in the direction you desire. Let us look at another example; lets say that you are told in a reading that a car accident is in your future. Look at the factors: Are your tires in good condition? Have you been driving recklessly or unfocused? Is there bad weather due? The tarot is merely giving you information, what you do with it decides your fate. Some people will view the situation as a fact, and in this situation the car accident is unavoidable. However, all that is needed is some common sense, and the effort put out to avoid an accident, and it will no longer be a valid factor in your life. All divination and psychic abilities work in this manner, and nothing is written in stone. One thing that I failed to mention, that is crucial to the interpretation of a reading, is your own spiritual and philosophical viewpoint, and the point upon your journey that you are at.

For example, a Christian woman once gave me a reading. She began to do a life reading on me, telling me I was a “dark�?person, and I “used�?people, and by the time she was done had ascertained I was “evil�? From her perspective, this was all true. Energy is mutable, and the symbols given will be perceived according to our perspective of them. This is something a person needs to be aware of when getting readings from others. The amount and depth of information will also greatly vary according to the evolution of the person giving the reading.

   Now there are many methods and vehicles for divination, each with it’s own system and perspective.  Some methods are pure in form, as they do not rely on a preset belief system, such as reading tea leaves, or casting objects such as sticks or stones. These form patterns we interpret as pictures, and thus interpret via our own perspective. Another such method is automatic writing. In this method we ask a question, and write down the answer as it comes to us. With this method, and all methods really, we should erect protections, so as not to allow wandering spirits to intercede in the process, giving false information. With automatic writing, sometimes a spirit will enter the being, and do the writing. Avoid this, it is dangerous. As long as you do not feel a distinct personality different from your own, you should be fine. Of course there is the direct use of psychic abilities without a translating vehicle, but many feel a need to have something they can touch and relate to.

Using a vehicle gives us confidence, as we are creating the illusion in a sense, that it is the vehicle, not ourselves, giving the information. Using a vehicle can also root the energy into the physical more deeply, and provide a more fun and relatable experience. Many psychics will use a vehicle only for the sake of those receiving a reading, giving the recipient a sense of connectedness and confidence in the information given. When looking for someone to give you a reading, ask quite a few people for recommendations, look for names that are repeated. Ask the psychic or reader what their personal belief system is based on, make sure it is somewhat aligned to your own. Get a sense for the person, and whether you are compatible, and feel confident in their abilities. Always make sure you receive the reading from the perspective of just “information�? not fact. Record the reading by tape recorder or by hand. When using a tape, listen carefully later for unusual voices that do not belong, sometimes you can hear spirits whispering. Psychic energy tends to attract these entities, and pets also.

Avoid those who “channel�? most of these beings that are being channeled have a specific agenda, and this will cloud the truth of the information you are wanting. In all cases, review the information, and make sure it is valid for you, do not accept it just because this person seems to know more than you. Take some time to digest it; sometimes these things do not make sense till later. Keep a journal of these readings, and look at them from time to time, see if any puzzle pieces have fallen together you did not previously see. Do this also in the case of personal readings you have done for yourself.

    When doing a reading for your self, take time away from others, and relax first. Just empty your mind, and let go of all the stresses or pent up emotions you may feel. When you feel clear, proceed with the reading. It is a good thing to maintain your divination items in a special place, and have a small ritual you do with each reading. For example you could light a candle and some incense, play some mellow music without words, and lay out a special cloth you keep with your tool of divination. “Clear�?the cards of any old energy by shuffling them without forming a question. See them becoming “clear�? and in the process feel yourself becoming clear. Other methods of cleansing your items are placing them in salt for a day or two, or burying them in dirt for a day. To charge them, leave in sunlight for a few hours, or do visualizations seeing the sun’s and earth’s energies filling them. As you continue, make sure by this point you have created protections (I will discuss this at a latter time). Call upon any forces, deities, etc., that you desire or the universe as a whole, to aid you in the reading.

Begin to shuffle the cards in the traditional manner, or the hand-to-hand method, letting the cards fall in a shuffling manner from one hand to another. I use the latter, waiting for cards to flip out onto the working surface. I do not use a direct layout system, but “feel�?the cards proper place in my readings. This is more advanced, so when using traditional methods, lay the cards in the proper order of the system you are using as they flip out, or when you flip the cards over. If you are using traditional methods, stop shuffling when you feel your question is answered. Some people cut the deck, some don’t. Make sure you state your intentions to the universe beforehand, of what method you will use. This will ensure a clear ordering of the cards. Continue the reading as I described earlier. Now, when the reading is over, thank whatever forces you may have called upon to help, or thank the universe as a whole.  Make sure at this point you take down your shields!!! If you constantly build new shields over old ones, you will attract unwanted spirits, and cause chaos or excess buildup of stale energy. Protections should be fresh and clear every reading. Some good ways to ponder readings are as follows: Draw pictures of the images given to meditate upon.

Write a story about the information given, look at different ways the story could go, how you could “change�?the pattern. Talk about the reading with a close friend; ask if they have any ideas or perceptions regarding the reading. Pretend like you are giving the reading to someone else, and give yourself the advice you would give to another person. Set the reading information aside, and come back to it in a day or two. Make a “map�?and map out possibilities, after all life is a journey. Be creative, and enjoy your readings, never face them with depression or fear, convert such energies into excitement and possibility.

    The actual meaning and history of the Tarot is a very indepth study. For years I meditated on the Tarot, and the meanings they possessed unto themselves. The Tarot is several things. It is a history of the world, it is the journey of personal development, and it is the ancient secrets of magic and the occult. All in all, it is a book without a binding, mutable, and yet always the same. Its mysteries will draw you in, and enchant you, but beware. As in all forms of divination, they can become addictive, and you may find yourself forming a dependence on them. This is not healthy; remember “all things in moderation�? Excess of any kind will form imbalances, and in the case of divination this surfaces as an inability to make spontaneous choices on your own. Tools are great, but they are only that, tools.

Remember always that it is you that it is truly behind the tool, in truth you do not “need�?it to function, or find the answers you are searching for. View divination as a tool to teach you the art of seeing the whole picture, in this way you can more quickly develop your own intuitive abilities. Eventually perhaps you will outgrow the tool, or perhaps it will always remain as a close friend. Whatever the case may be, remember you create your fate; your destiny is in your hands.
