My experience making my own oils:
You will need:
-a small pot
-a cereal bowl, or other ceramic bowl, which when resting in the small pot, doesn't hit the bottom of it
-a carrier oil, I usually use grapeseed or olive oil
-your dried herb
-mortar and pestle
-cheesecloth
-funnel
-small (or large) bottles, for storing your oils!
-stickers or labels, just so you can tell which oil is which
-ammonia, to clean your mortar and pestle
Put some water into the pot. Don't use too much water - the amount you want, is that when the bowl is resting in the pot, the bowl DOES NOT sit in the water. You want a double-boiler effect, not direct heat! Heat water to boiling. While the water is heating, grind the herb(s) in your mortar and pestle. This way, you can ask the herb to be extra protective, or whatever you're using the resulting oil for! Check your correspondences of the herb before you use the wrong one!
Each time I use this method, I'm using about 1/8th of a cup of oil, with 3 huge tablespoons of dried herbs.
After grinding the herbs until they are pretty much pulverized, put about 1/8th of a cup of grapeseed oil in the cereal bowl, and put the bowl on the pot. Then you can dump out the ground herbs into the oil. I let the double-boiler do it's work for at least 2 hours. Allow to cool, or let it rest over night. Then, line the funnel with the cheesecloth. Pour the cooled oil into your chosen jar. Squeeze the cheesecloth bundle with all your might, into the jar still using the funnel. This way, there is less waste.
I find this method a very inexpensive way of producing quality annointing oils, and I feel that because I made it, the resulting oil has more strength for me.
Oh yeah, and to really, really clean your mortar and pestle, you can put a little bit of water into it (couple tablespoons), and add a couple more tablespoons of ammonia. Be sure to do this in a well-ventilated area, as ammonia REEKS. But, it also is a de-greaser, which is what is probably staining your mortar and pestle. For example, I've ground frankincense in my mortar, and it's come perfectly clean after soaking it with ammonia and water overnight.
