Funny how lots of things are right in front of our face but invisible till someone shows
us. Persephone is on top of The White House in Washington D.C. In Greek mythology
she is the Goddess of the Underworld and the wife of Hades (The Devil !).
Of all the statues to put on top of the most important building in the world. If everything is
symbolic what does that symbolize in a Christian Country? A Greek mythology scholar would
say,
The religion of the ancient Greeks did not separate gods into categories of good or evil, but most people today tend to think in terms of "God" and "Devil" archetypes. Because of this, Hades (as the ruler of the underworld) is usually portrayed as a Satanic figure in popular culture. -Wikipedia.org
The only thing about that type of reasoning is this isn't ancient Greece and
Government symbols are chosen very carefully. This is a Christian country right?
This article says that the translation of Per- sephone means "destroyer of light".
Every year Hades fights his way back to the land of the living with Persephone in his chariot. Famine (winter and fall) occurs during the months that Persephone is gone and Demeter grieves in her absence. It is believed that the last half of the word Persephone comes from a word meaning 'to show' and evokes an idea of light. Whether the first half derives from a word meaning 'to destroy' - in which case Persephone would be 'she who destroys the light'. -Wikipedia.org
