Early on in my Spiritual training it became apparant to me that thoughts are things and I would need to train my mind to do Soul's bidding if I were to survive in this 3D world at full potential...

Here are some tips that I have used to help me re-train and conquer my mental processes on my journey toward Self-Understanding...

I used to put a rubber band around my wrist and when I became aware that I was entertaining a negative thought or indulging in fears/worries and the like, I just simply 'snapped' it!  I did this for about 3 months...

Then when I was aware of how habitual my negative thinking was I got even more serious about this...

I took a note pad and divided it in half...   putting the words 'Positive and Negative' on each side. I randomly set the oven timer and went about my chores around the house and when the timer sounded...   I reflected on the quality of my thought...   If it were a positive one, I put a checkmark on the side of the pad that my thought fit...    at the start of this technique - I was dismayed to find that 9 of 10 thoughts I caught myself indulging in were negative! Then I would randomly re-set the timer and go about my business once again...  At the end of the experiment - 11 Months later - I was pleased to notice that approximatly 9 of my thoughts were positive whereas only 1 was negative!  This was very encouraging to me...

Other tips...   get some motivational tapes and let them play in the background with uplifting inspiring messages...   I used to get books on tape that were put out by the path I was following...

One can also order audio tapes from their local library by Dr. Wayne Dyer and the like and listen to them...
Insiring music is a must background for me too as I am an empath!

Also when one asks their HS for help in learning to re-program the mind - it is freely given!

Does anyone have any other tips and means that they have used along the way that may help us out here?
Each one teach one!!!

Namaste...     ~eerie

It is sooo easy to lose focus...   your intent counts at this time hon!  When I was thinking about sharing these tips - I felt pretty confident that all the years of self monitoring of my thought processes had yeilded some results...   yet - just last nite I was strongly re-minded of how little I really know about doing this...lol!   It is a constant ongoing thing...   it never stops!!!  We are so programmed and re-act so strongly to outside sources...  It is always a battle for the Mind!
Stay focused!

Self talk is revealing

"If you wish to know the mind of a man, listen to his words."

-- Chinese Proverb

What passes over your lips each day?

Are your words typically negative, critical, gossiping, deceptive, illusory, justifying, blaming, manipulative and argumentative? Are they more uplifting, inspirational, positive, questioning, beautiful, loving, universal, truthful, accepting and supportive?

The throat is our center of expression. Who we are sneaks out in our attitudes and in what we say.

"Handle them carefully, for words have more power than atom bombs."

-- Pearl Strachan Hurd

"The wise weigh their words on a scale with gold."

-- Bible

Hi Eerie, thanks for sharing this section.  Although I don't think I will try the rubber band thing (my wrist would hurt too much, lol) I like teh idea of background motivational tapes and the checklist idea.  If I set the oven timer I wonder if I would try too hard to remember how many minutes I had left on it.  It seems things haved been extra tense lately and I sometimes have trouble just focussing on getting a clear breath in every now and then.  It's bad especially when I wake up.  For those first few moments I am a bit dazed, trying to focus on my dreams adn such and take me back to where I am but then I have to struggle to keep the negativity from coming back.  Oversleeping isn't good for me but it's a habit I've made for myself.

But then, I am jsut getting over the flu so I need all the rest I can get.

Hope your holidays are going well.

I feel sad and lonely.

Good to see you on the boards hon...   I will continue this soon as I am able - I reinjured the wrist that I broke after Katrina last year and am resting it in a brace till the pain settles down a bit!
One hand typing is not easy for me!

The Power of Thought...

Most people live unaware of the effect their thoughts and emotions have in creating their lives, and many people are not even aware of what they are thinking and feeling most of the time...   We live without focus, distracted by the demands of modern living and guided by outside influences such as the media. But in this age of enlightenment more people are waking up to the fact that they can create their reality through greater self and spiritual awareness...
Not only do we create our own reality, we also create a collective one. The more people there are who entertain fearful thoughts in the world, not only create fear in their own lives, but feed into a collective thought form of fear, which once focused, will manifest in this world... perhaps in the form of a war, or any other negative global reality.
The opposite of fear, and the highest form of energy, is love...  by focusing on love and giving it form, we can consciously dissipate fear and allow a more positive reality to manifest for us all. We should be ever mindful of the power of our thoughts...

The Restless Mind - The Constantly Thinking Mind
By Remez Sasson

The natural tendency of the mind is to be restless. Thinking seems to be a continuous and ongoing activity. The restless mind lets thoughts come and go incessantly from morning till night. They give us no rest for a moment. Most of these thoughts are not exactly invited; they just come, occupy our attention for a while, and then disappear.

Our true essence can be likened to the sky, and our thoughts are the clouds. The clouds drift through the sky, hide it for a while and then disappear. They are not permanent. So are thoughts. Because of their incessant movement they hide our essence, our core, and then move away to make room for other thoughts.

Thoughts resemble the waves of the ocean, always in a state of motion, never standing still. These thoughts arise in our mind due to many reasons. There is a tendency on the part of the mind to analyze whatever it contacts. It likes to compare, to reason, and to ask questions. It constantly indulges in these activities.

Everyone's mind has a kind of a filter, which allows it to accept, let in certain thoughts, and reject others. This is the reason why some people occupy their minds with thoughts about a certain subject, while others don't even think about the same subject.

Why some people are attracted to football and others don't? Why some love and admire a certain singer and others don't? Why some people think incessantly about a certain subject, and others never think about it? It is all due to this inner filter.

This is an automatic unconscious filter. We never stop and say to certain thoughts 'come' and to others we say 'go away'. It is an automatic activity. This filter was built during the years. It was and is built constantly by the suggestions and words of people we meet, and as a consequence of our daily experiences.

Every event, happening or word has an affect on the mind, which produces thoughts accordingly. The mind is like a thought factory, working in shifts day and night, producing thoughts.

The mind also gets thoughts directly from the surrounding world. The space around us is full of thoughts, which we constantly pick, let pass through our minds, and then pick up new ones. It is like catching fish in the ocean, throwing them back into the water and then catching a new ones.

This activity of the restless mind occupies our attention all the time. Now our attention is on this thought and then on another one. We pay a lot of energy and attention to these passing thoughts. Most of them are not important. They just waste our time and energy.

This is enslavement. It is as if some outside power is always putting a thought in front of us to pay attention to. It is like a relentless boss constantly giving us a job to do. There is no real freedom. We enjoy freedom only when we are able to still the mind and choose our thoughts. There is freedom, when we are able to decide which thought to think and which one to reject. We live in freedom, when we are able to stop the incessant flow of thoughts.

Stopping the flow of thoughts may look infeasible, but constant training and exercising with concentration exercises and meditation, eventually lead to this condition. The mind is like an untamed animal. It can be taught self-discipline and obedience to a higher power. Concentration and meditation show us in a clear and practical manner that we, the inner true essence, are this controlling power. We are the bosses of our minds.

(thanx to Teddy)

Here are some thoughts on Self-Talk!

Research has determined that we are constantly talking with ourselves, even though we are not conscious of this running internal dialogue that fills our head. This steady stream of self-speak is our ongoing encounter with the things we see, hear, and experience, stimuli that is translated into words that become patterns of conditioning and thought. This self-speak can be positive and empowering, or negative and defeating. Either way, it is what generates our emotions and activates our behaviors. Words are not just words. They are inner directives flowing just under our surface of awareness.

Dichotomy

Comes from the Greek dichotomia, from dichotomos, divided, from dich-, in two + temnein, to cut.

My own research shows that the process of dichotomous analysis, one of the main tools humans seem to use to make maps, has a set of properties that are often projected onto the object under analysis, leading to the confusion of map and territory. Here is the list of properties, taken from "The Sense of Dichotomy":

The Principle of Dichotomy

A fundamental tool used in prediction is the derivation of a classification system. In Western civilization, we can trace this back to the works of Aristotle (1) and the concept of dichotomy. A dictionary describes dichotomy as:

"1. (logic) division into two classes, one positive, the other negative. 2.(botony) a mode of branching by repeated bifurcation"

Your ongoing mission is to become aware of your self-speak so you can recognize and rechannel the stream that is running your feelings and behaviors. The ancient text of the I Ching uses the imagery of Wind over Water, which suggests that the rippling waves reflect all the moods of the skies. Watch your words, for it is your self-speak that creates your experience and helps you crest.

You must be master of your mind rather than be mastered by your mind.

Act as if you are serious about attaining your dream. Walk, talk, and act enthusiastically, creating a single-minded attitude of success toward the results you desire.

The warrior knew that it was not his sword that struck. Striking the opponent was achieved through a state of mind and attitude. Armed with the ultimate weapon of concentrated and focused confidence, the warrior wielded a total presence. Adopt this warrior mindset. The attitude you hold about yourself decides your destiny...

Someone on another forum asked this question...

"How do you stop missing someone?
Yesterday when I was having dinner with someone he mentioned a mutual friend who cut ties with me over a year ago. I thought I was ok with it now ... that I had done all the forgiving that needed to be done ... and I truly wish her well in life ... but when he mentioned her name it was all I could do to keep from crying right there in the restaurant ... the feeling of missing her was so profound. So how do you stop missing someone?"

As this is something I have been meaning to put on this workshop, I will share what I told her here...

Cxxx...   we always miss those we have loved! And if the memory is pleasant...  nice! It's only human to miss them!

Your question was 'How does one stop missing someone?'  I would like to share my thoughts in dealing with unpleasant or painful memories!

When we stay focused in the 'now', we are dealing with what is called 'primary experience'...  For instance we use our brain to determine if we are hot, cold, hungry, full, warm and so on...  are we safe or is there a need to re-act to anything in our immediate surroundings?  However, we are using a different aspect of the brain when we tune into daydreaming, planning, creative persuits, viewing movies, reading books or accessing our memory banks...   Then we are using our imagination which is really a 'secondary experience'...   We can get caught up in the emotional dramas of our imagination so easily!  Our thinking processes make this so when coupled with strong feelings that our imagination invokes in us...

So - to carry this further - I feel you were enjoying your primary experience of dining out with a friend and when they mentioned that other friend that you haven't seen in a while - you tuned into memories/feelings that made your 'now' not very pleasant!  I feel you took what you were recieving in memory (secondary exp.) and made it into a primary experience!

We have the choice to live in the now of primary experience or to allow the mind to wander and delve into unpleasant secondary experiences!  The simple thing to do IMO is just take control of the thought process and change your mind!

You will be where you focus your attention...

Hope this helps a bit - I don't even know if this makes sense in the telling...lol!

Namaste...    ~eerie
