Mantra For Honoring The Divine Om Namah Shivya Pronounced: (Om Nuh-muh Shee-vah-yuh) “I bow to the Divine within?or “I honor my innermost Self?or “Reverence to God.?/P> Om namah shivaya is a very popular and highly sacred mantra in the Indian tradition. Its basic meaning is “Om. Reverence to Shiva.? However, in the nondual spiritual tradition that informs the practice of yoga, Shiva refers not to a god but to the divine power of Consciousness itself, which is the ultimate basis and essence of all reality. Because that Consciousness is our own true nature, Shiva is equated with the innermost Self. For this reason, the mantra can be fairly translated as “Om. I bow to the Divine within.?/P> ~~~~~~~~~ Interpreted by Christopher D. Wallis, A Sanskrit Scolar at UC Berkeley and cofounder of the Yoga Foundation. |
