Hey everybody, my name is Dave and I have been a type one diabetic for 26 out of the 28 yrs I have been on this earth.  I am pleased to report I have no kidney problems (I made it past the 25 yr cut off!) and the only complication I have is mild non prolific retinopathy.  But... I feel like ever since I've been on Lantus I cannot feel my low BS, sometimes I'll walk around at a BS of 29 or 32 and not really feel it, does any one else have this problem?

Also, is there any one on this messageboard who is a CDE?  I am a newly graduated BSN RN and I am looking to become a CDE, does anyone have any advice how I can aquire my 2000 teaching hrs?

Peace,

Dave

Thanks for posting the link to the Glucose Training/Recognition site.
I was going to suggest the same thing and am going back to that site to look around again.

Hi Dave since I was put on synthetic insulins my low or high awareness disappeared completely. When I was using the "old" beef style Lente I could notice the differences but not anymore. For me when I do go way low the only warning I get is if someone with me notices.I also at times wonder if some, not all,of my other complications can be linked to synthetic insulins because they did not start until after I was put on synthetic insulins, about two or three years afterwards. When I was going to my Endo's office and talkng to other type1s,I got the impression that the number of complications were growing dramatically as people were being put onto synthetics. The number of lows and calls to 911(trips to the ER) have gone up by huge amounts.....just ask the ambalance people. But of coarse insulin manufactors just deny this idea and say it is rare or plain and simple it does not happen and that their insulins are far better and safer than the "old" styles.Sorry I got off topic,no I do not use Lantus as it is not aviable up here but this question does apply to all syntheic insulins.

hi!  I have had no awareness since my first child 9 years ago,  they are so bad that the rescue squad has to come to my house often.  My husband and i have a system that we call each other often during the day and if i don't answer he knows that there is a problem.  My sugars have gone as low as 5 and as high as 675 without any notice of symptoms or not.  I started on lantus about 3 weeks ago.  Hope this message leaves you well, and i am sorry your experience with this happens to you.

I used to think that just being a type 1 for 46 years caused the hypo unawareness, but it sounds like the type of insulin contributes to it. When mine get down to around 40, my vision changes. That is my first definite symptom, though a "foggy brain" probably pecedes it.

Hi Dave,

My husband is Type 1 and was on Lantus for about 18 months but had to get off of it because it was too aggressive.  His sugar would plumet so rapidly that he didn't realize what was going on and go on rampages.  The last episode made him go to the hospital and get 14 stitches in his head because he "blacked out" due to low blood sugar and tried to throw himself thru our picture window.  With Lantus and him, there were no warning signs that his sugar was dropping and he would mentally black out and spaz out.

I AM A TYPE 2 ON INSULIN FOR OVER A YEAR.  I USE APIDRA (SIMILAR TO HUMALOG, I THINK.  FAST ACTING.)  PLUS LANTUS.  WHEN FIRST STARTING LANTUS, I EXPERIENCED LOWS, FEELING EXTREMELY HUNGRY, SWEATS, DIZZY.  MY ENDO SUGGESTED I SPLIT THE LANTUS INTO 2 SHOTS, 12 HRS APART, INSTEAD OF 1 LARGE DOSE.  VERY SELDOM HAVE A LOW NOW AND BETWEEN THE 2 INSULINS HAVE GOOD CONTROL.
I USUALLY FEEL SICK TO STOMACH WHEN BS GETS AROUND 60.
THIS MAY NOT HELP A T-1, BUT, IT COULD BE A ALTERNATIVE FOR USING LANTUS.

Dave,

I have this also, it showed up at around the 19 year mark.  From my own research and other message boards, hypo unawareness is caused by frequent hypos, where the body starts to act as thouugh it's a regular thing, therefore is doesn't release the warning signs (sweating, confusion, etc).

I used to start sweating profusely, even if it was mid-January, with any low going below 4 (72), but not anymore.  Like you, I can be walking around at work in the 3 (54) range and not feel a thing.   Last January, I passed out at work from a severe hypo, despite feeling fine 5 minutes before that - I was standing at the photocopier, and down I went - no time to do anything.

According to research findings, hypo unawareness CAN be reversed by avoiding ANY lows for a prolonged period of time.  The main thing that I have done to combat this, is test a LOT more (I now test a minimum of ten times a day).   While I still have frequent lows with my physical job, I can react quicker to avoid any ambulance trips to the hospital.

I am type I and been on both animal and man made insulins.  I noticed  I can't feel my sugars as good as I use to on the animal insulins.  I complained to doc's (late 80's) who said a 60 is a 60 (for instance) no matter how you get there, and refused to blame it on man made insulins.  I do wonder.  Having said that, I think lantus and levemir give us a better chance at avoiding night time lows over N insulin as they don't peak the same.  Lantus and Levemir are safer for sleep.  We can take our short term insulins during the day and test. We can't test in our sleep.

I still use the animal insulin's and after 43 yrs on insulin I still have full hypo awareness. Not sure if this statement adds anything to the discussion.

Hi Dave,

I am T1 for 20 years and was on humalog and Lantus.  I began not having low blood sugar symptoms when my doc changed me to Levemir.  Now I have low blood sugar warnings.

So maybe it is the Lantus.....

My husband is type 1 on novo rapid with meals and NPH at night. He usually feels it but the other day I found him having seizures and barely consousious. His blood sugar when the paramedics got here was 1.2 (don't know what it is on your scale. They could not find out what happened. Now instead of 25 units of NPH he only needs 10. Nobody knows why. My sister in law also has type 2 and she feels it sometimes but not always. She is on the same insulin.

Dear Dave,
Have been a Type I diabetic for 45 years with no major complications.  Have been on Lantus for the last 5 years.  I also, have been experiencing low blood sugars (between 25 and 40) with no awareness what so ever.  My doctor said after being a diabetic for so many years, the low blood suger symptoms "Mask" themselves.  This has lead to numerous problems.
Really hope ther is an answer to this problem.

my son has been on lantus since he was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes almost 5 years ago.  He is only 5 and he can tell when he is low, he gets hungry and insists on eating, also he gets the sweats and what he calls "pooped out".  last month he was having a little more lows so we just decreased his dose by a unit and he is doing fine now.  his A1C test turned up at 7.5% which is really good for his age.
