16 Myths of a "Diabetic Diet"By Karen Hanson Chalmers MS, RD, CDE et al. I found this book to be invaluable in helping me to understand the part that diet plays in the management of diabetes. Some of the myths explored include: - Sugar - People with diabetes can eat as much food as they want as long as the food doesn't contain sugar
- Sugar Substitutes - People with diabetes should only eat food that is sweetened with artificial sweeteners
- Carbohydrate Counting - Diabetics must use the exchange system for meal planning to manage their diabetes
- Weight Control - People with diabetes must be at ideal body weight to be healthy
- Dining Out - Diabetics shouldn't eat in restaurants
I highly recommend this book. Paperback US$14.95 Available through the ADA at www.diabetes.org or your local bookstore ISBN 1-58040-031-0 Recommended by Dick Shryock , 11/19/2000.

Pumping InsulinBy John Walsh, P.A., C.D.E. and Ruth Roberts, M.A.. I am reading a book I heartily recommend for any type 1 on multiple daily injections or the pump. I never read it before because I thought is was only about pump therapy. WRONG!!! It has so much useful information about insulin injections that I am sorry I didn't read it when I first started MDI a zillion years ago. There is so much I didn't know about low blood sugars, even after all these years! It contains all the basic information about pumping, including step-by-step instructions for setting and monitoring basals, boluses and corrections. In addition, it has useful information about insulin therapy in general, such as high and low blood sugars, the action of insulin, carb counting, and exercise. It has chapters on pregnancy and children and teens as well. A big thumbs up from this book critic! Recommended by Juli , 6/27/2002.
