When do you know its time to go to the ER? How long do you give yourself time to bring your sugars down before you know you need help? With this chest infection, My numbers have been really high, but Ive been able to bring them down reasonably fast. But, it worries me sometimes. |

Terry, I'm so glad you got your sugars to come down. That can be very scary. It happened to me one time that way too but they finally started coming down and I didn't have to go to the ER. I would say if your sugars are very high and you throw up, and you have ketones or you don't have anything to test for ketones but you suspect you may be spilling ketones, it is time to head to the ER. If they stay high for over 3 hours and are not even starting to edge their way back down with lots of insulin, again, test for ketones, but if you don't have any ketostix, may be time to head to the ER. I know we hate the ER. I have never had to go there for DKA yet since my diagnosis 26 years ago, but if I had to, I would. Julie |

Terry, I've gotten as high as 425 here recently , I felt every tired and cranky. But I didn't go the ER. I think like Julie said if you start to getting sick to your stomach & or have keytones in your urine than for certain get to the ER. Hope you get over that infection soon. Being sick & certain medicines can certantly play havoc with our sugars. Maryb |

How high are you talking. My husband had the meter say ketones and refused to go to the hospital. His sister had just had breast surgery and we were all together talking. He move away and stayed with the kids watching tv and it came down within minutes. Another time he hit 33 on the meter and wouldn't go to er. It came down eventually. He was running extremlt high for a number of years since he refused to take meds. He lost 50 pounds in a few months. He said it was healthier to lose the waight but he looked like someone from a concentration camp even though he weighed 150 pounds. Last October he had a heart attck and we were told since he was so high in the blood sugars for so long, all the nutrients he was peeing out and his body was feeding on his mucles. He had a painless heart attack with some diabetics can have. Hope you take care of yourself. |
