Hi Dolly,

I  believe the general rule of thumb is that the "open" insulin bottle you are using can be kept at room temperature for up to a month.  You must keep it from extreme temperatures -- do not leave it in a car in the summer where it can reach very high temps.  Also, do not allow it to freeze.  This is a practice I have followed for over 21 years with no problems.

I know some people keep their insulin in the fridge all the time.  It may make sense to do that if a bottle would last you more than a month.  Injecting cold insulin can be uncomfortable though.

Stay cool,
Type1Mike

guess it depends on which kind of insulin your using. I keep the humalog out (when I have taken the cap off) until I use it which takes a few months cause I'm super sensative and I only take about 15 units top per day so hense keeping it out a few months. I have never had any go bad but you have to really watch it.  I had always kept the lantus in the fridge no matter what but I had a chance to experiment (have alot of vials) to see if it does go bad if kept out of the fridge and if I used it longer than the 28 days Aventis says it last. I haven't had any of that get weaker too. I wouldn't suggest anyone do what I have done and do but so far it's worked for me. I keep ALL the insulin in the fridge except the vials I am using.

If the insulin has not been opened, then it can stay in the fridg until the expiration date on the package. Once you have openedand used the insulin, you should refer to the manufacturer's instructions. Example: Novolog 70/30 mix has a 14 day limit as compared with Humalog 75/25 which has a 10 day limit. However the Humalog and Novalog pens have an expiration date of year end of 2005 if left unopen. You can always call the company toll free number and they will assist you as well as send you good info.

Hope this answers your question. Dick Fr...
