I am taking 16 units around 7pm and find that after 12 hours say 7am my sugars start to rise rapidly. When I give myself insulin around 7 am (7units) the sugars rise to around 200 by seven in the evening. That is an increase from 130 at lunch time. It looks like I need to add another insulin shot around lunchtime splitting the doses. I am curious as to what others have experienced as I am fairly new to insulin. I have been on oral medications for approximately 5 years and their effectiveness has begun to wear off. I am seeing my Endo this week and will be asking him the same questions, but I would really like some feedback from the group as to wether this is normal and what your experiences have been as you started insulin. By the way I am using Humalog 75/25 mix pen.

Thanks, Dick Fr...

The insulin you are taking is 75% long acting and 25% fast acting. So when you take that 16 units at night you are not getting enough of the long acting to hold you until morning. About 12 units of it is long acting and the other 4 is fast acting. And the 7 units you take in the morning gives you about 5 units of long acting and 2 of fast acting, which doesn't seem to be enough to carry you through the day. I was on that insulin at one time and I never was in good control, I was either so high I wouldn't register or so low I was practically on the floor. Have you ever thought about asking your doctor about Lantus? It is a long acting insulin that lasts for 24 hours for most people, and it's taken at night usually and then they use Humalog or Novolog for meals. I hope you get it all straight soon, I know it makes you feel bad when your sugars are high. I'm sorry to be so honest about that insulin but I just don't like it. I started on the pump a couple years ago and it has been wonderful!!

Thanks for the feedback. It gives me an insight and talking points when I visit my Endo this morning.
