Hi, I've been on lantus for a few yrs and several pills also, today my doctor took me off all my diabetic meds and told me to increase my lantus from 40 u and day to 55 u a day. I didn't realise how much he wanted me to take a day intill after I had come home. Now I am afraid to take 15u more of lantus at one time! Is this ok. What will happen to me if I do?
I had told him I would like to not have to take so much medicine and thats when he started taking me off most of my meds ( all of my diabetic meds), He is a new doctor for me, an  internist. We moved a few months ago. I just need to know what could happen to me when I add 15 extra units of lantus to my body tomorrow! Please answer as soon as possiable. Thank you in advance.  Kathy

I will be making a schuelu tomorrow and staying to it for sure, this scares me. If I end up in the hospital I'll let you know. lol I took my sugar yesterday fasting and it was 118 and this morning fasting it was 142 then 2 hrs later still fasting it was 128. So really have no ideal what they have been running. Pray for me please. Thank you so much. Kathy

If I were you, I would start out increasing the Lantus by 2 units a couple of days and see how your readings look  I was first diagnosed as Type 2  a year and a half ago and was put on pills.  Then went to endo when readings were still too high.  She started me out at a very small amount of Lantus and gradually took me off the pills.  Taking me off the pills made no difference.  Blood tests show I am really LADA Type 1 and am insulin sensitive instead of insulin resistant.  But I would still increase Lantus slowly so your blood sugar doesn't bottom out.

Thank you for your concern and help. I'm now through my second day of my new meds and everything seems to be ok. I have slept more then usual but that could be from the new sleeping pill he gave me. I've also noticed my appitite has increased. Every few hours I'm hungry. I hope that doesn't last. But I guess I was scared for nothing. I'm so grateful for this site and the great people on it. Thank you all so very much. Kathy

at first i was taking 80 units of lantus but that was too high and i woke up with low blood sugar blues. when the dosage was reduced to 60 units, glucose level is higher but i don't have the shakes.

lantus is much weaker than novoline. so a change of 10 or twenty units might cause some problems but you wouldn't be in any real danger like going into a coma. taking blood sugar readings will give the results of the insulin dosage. if you wake up with a reading of above 80 than that lantus dose is ok. but make sure you eat some carbs.

i recently went off of metformin. readings are higher but still under 200. most are under 150.

Thanks for bringing up lantus. I started that & humalog about 6 months ago. Started w/low doses  & now take 16u of humalog before meals, 80u of lantus and now  metanformin 500mg 2x daily. Now having better control but worried about all that meds. Had just started w/an endo who added the metanformin (sp?). I am very brittle. Stress seems to be my biggest problem. What are your thoughts. I was on 70/30 humalin & wish I was back on it but they say NO> I was dumb enough to ask about the lantus/humalog. A cousin is the same as me w/the 2 combos.
bun.

the problem is people aren't the same. so what i say about my experience maybe of no use to you. or it might be helpful.

right now i am taking 60 units of lantus at night. take novolin as needed. novolin is fast acting and short lasting. it is very powerful stuff. if i were to take 16 units of it, i would go into coma. don't let the dosage scare you. lantus is much weaker than novolin. humalog is also weaker than novolin. taking metformin might reduce the amount of insulin you need.

if your diabetes is under control, i wouldn't worry about it. stress may cause you more harm than the meds your taking might cause. your blood tests will tell you what is going on. keep in mind, diabetes if uncontrolled is a killer. it almost killed me. i was extremely concern when i woke up from that coma. but learn a bit about diabetes and am more relax about it.

I have both diabetes types. I currently take 50U Lantus, sliding scale starting at 15 for humulog and avandia pill. Be sure to test your glucose at least before or after each meal. You may have more lows.

I'm 72 units of Lantus at night, sliding scale Novolog, and Avandia. The one thing I didn't see mentioned and is really important is to remember your mid snacks. Mid-morning, mid-afternoon, and before bedtime if you experience lows during the nights. I have the problem with spiking levels at 3am in the morning. Drives me nuts. I wake up wiht a hot flash and I know I have spiked. They says it's the liver getting insulin ready for the day. It can stop now.

For those of you on Lantus and Avandia, I am just curious to know what dose of Avandia?  I had been on Avandia, 8 mg, for several years, and last year began using Lantus and more recently added Novolog (currently at 74 units Lantus and 16 units Novolog), and in addition I am on the same amounts of Avandia (8 mg) and Metformin (3x850 mg) as before I began the insulin (though I did drop the Glyburide).  I think I should be able to cut back on the Avandia and/or Metformin, but my endocrinologist has resisted this so far.  My blood glucose control is very good these days, but my weight gain is bad since going on insulin(s).

Thanks

I taking 35 units of Lantus along with Metformin 1000mg twice a day,Avandia 4mg twice a day also Glucotrol XL 5mg twice a day.  The Avandia has cause me to have fluid retention so bad and I have also gained more weight.41 lbs in just 2 months.  I have my blood glucose under contol but my weight is so bad since being put on insulin ans avandia. I have appt tomorrow with my endo dr.  Can't wait to discuss this with him. This will be my first visit with him since my old endo dr left 3 months ago.

After complaining to my doctors about my swollen ankles for a couple of years, my endocrinologist finally cut back my Avandia dose from 8 mg to 4 mg daily (about 4-5 months ago).  The swelling in my ankles has gone down significantly, and the discoloration I was seeing of my skin in my ankles and tops of my feet has also begun to fade.  I am also no longer having pain in my shoulders (though whether this was due to the Avandia, I really don't know).  I had to increase my Lantus dose about 10 units after I cut back on the Avandia, but I am happy with that.  I would like to get rid of the Avandia completely as I think I am still having some fluid retention, and I think it is still hindering weight loss.   I am going to ask my doctors about this the next time I see them.
