Hi I just started on lantus last week and i do have a couple of questions. I am under doctor supervision until we find what work for me. I find so far i'm alot higher for now then i would like. But i am finding i'm hungry alot ectt....I'm had a headache for over a week. My one question is i like to have small snacks thoughout the day for weight sake and now i'm scared to eat thinking my sugars will skyrocket. I also do take Humalog at meal time. 2) when the doctor finally tells me its ok i'm wondering how i would adjust my humalog with my meals. Mostly i'm concerned about what to eat. Can anyone help me or if anyone else has any other advise on this insulin. THanks Col |

Col, I don't have enough info to give you any useful suggestions -- have you been taking insulin before and just changed to Lantus and Humalog? What doses have you taken? Are you Type 1? When I started Lantus a few years ago, I was taking 2 shots a day of mixed Regular and Lente. My doc told me to start my Lantus at 80% of my total daily of Lente ( long acting) insulin and to total my Regular insulin doses, divide proportionately for each meal and take my Humalog at 80% of that dose with each meal. Then I adjusted as needed for a week or two until I got dialed in. As it turned out for me, I ended up taking the same units of Lantus as my previous total dose of Lente. My Humlog is adjusted with each meal depending on diet, exercise and pre-meal blood sugars readings. I have devised my own sliding scale that is constantly adjusted as needed. I have only had to adjust my Lantus dose once in 2 years. I have found Lantus and Novolog (I changed from Humalog a couple of years ago) to be one of the best things that I have ever done. I have so much more freedom and flexibility now -- I even occassionally skip a meal with no problem. My A1C's typically run in the low 6% range. I would recommend you try to stick with it and try to get your dose dialed in. If done properly you should end up happy and healthy. Best of Luck, Type1Mike |

Hi I'm been on Humalog for years. and i've been type one for 14 years. I was takening Humalog and N and some R time to time. When i first found out i was on Toronto and NPH. My sugars are high at high but most of the day they are good. My doctor is still playing with it. But my big problem is i'm hungry and i'm scared to eat other then at meal time. My ALC are 6.9 and this time it was 7.6. I have been exercises more and they think that is a main reason. Thanks for your help Col |

Hi, I have been on lantus for a little over 2 years now. I have been a Type 1 diabetic for 46 years. My guess is that the headaches and the hunger are from the high blood sugars. I also take humalog, or novolog, whenever I eat. I yake 1 unit for each 15 grams of carbs. I am now having the best control I ever had. Seems like your lantus needs to be adjusted. Sometimes I eat 3 meals, sometimes less, sometimes more. As long as I do the humalog, I have no problems. Please let me know how you are doing. Take care and good luck. Kathe |

I am on Lantus and just started Novolog with my night time meal and my diabectic care team is helping me to level out my blood sugars because they are running high between 200 and hundred and I am also on meds called starlyx I take that twice a day. when I started on lantus I was on thirty units then the have been going up on the dose right now I am on 65 units of lantus and 8 units of novolog and 120 mg of starlyx and still my blood sugars are still high. It will take time. I get headaches to and hunger pains to. |
