I have had 72 units of humalog and it still is not working. I had what I have eaten before without having a high but now it has gone up over 200 and keeps going up. I can not use novalog cause it did not work either. My insurence company is going to refuse to refill my insulin if I use it too fast. They do not understand that it takes a higher dose to work all they think is that I am abusing it and not following drs orders. I can not find an endocrinoligist in my area who takes medicaid and I can not aford a copay because medicare only pays 80 percent. I will have to travel over 100 miles from home to find a doctor who will treat me. I can not drive due to having seizures so it makes it hard to go any place that far away. No other dr will put me on the pump so how can I get one without and endo? Lori and Adam Chewbacca |

Lori, do you take 72 units at a time ? is that in a day or at a meal? I really don't have any any answers for you , have you talked to your Dr about this..what does he or she think ? I hope someone else see this that has more experience with insulin than I have. Maryb |

It was 24 units at a time with a total of 72 units within 4 hours. The doctor will not do anything about it except say maybe I should go on the pump. Like I said I can not find anyone to do it since I am on medicare and medicaid. I can not afford a copay so if the dr does not take medicaid then they will not see me. |

it sounds to me as if you do not have enough basal insulin. Have you discused with your Dr about increasing this? |

Lori... Hon, I'm confused....you said that you took 72 units of humalog....humalog, the fast acting insulin? I don't know if my memory is failing me....I used to take humalin (sp?..sorry) long lasting insulin with humalog, fast acting. You took 72 units of fast acting insulin with no lowering of your bloodsugar reading? |

As far as your insurance company not being willing to pay for the insulin if you use it too fast, I can offer a suggestion. My husband has the same insurance just under a different name because we live in Tennessee. We have had times where the insurance company either wouldn't pay for the diabetic medicine needed or wouldn't pay for enough of the medicine. We had to get the doctor to contact the insurance company and explain that he needed the insulin and other meds because nothing else worked and his body did need the large amounts that was prescriped. I know it's a headache but usually after the doctor talks to the insurance company, they will back off and pay for the needed medicine. As far as getting to an endo, I would look into seeing if there was any diabetic support groups in your area. You may find someone there who is making the trips to the closest endo and be willing to offer you a ride. I wished that you lived in my area because I would be happy to take you myself. Another thought would be maybe you could check with your church and see if some people there would offer you rides. Call your local Chamber of Commerce and see if there are any groups locally that could help. I know in the town where my mother-in-law lives that they offer something called Dail-A-Ride by a group named ETHRA {East Tennessee Human Resource Agency} and they will actually come to your house, pick you up, take to anywhere you need to go, and bring you back home. Just an idea. |
