Proud of myself.  Didnt eat a single cookie or sweet treat- nothing- at the monthly meeting of the SRC newsletter.  Instead drank 4 six-oz. cups of spring water.

Shopped in 2 different stores for veggies- got a good buy on cucumbers, green string beans, broccoli, green Bell peppers, mescalin (spelling? it's a mixture of greens)
I even got Tofu.

If I keep up with this journal, it  helps to stay on the right path.

Breakfast: Pan browned a thick pork chop in olive oil, ate 1/2 of it plus 1/2 cup string beans and a small amount of  naked Cream Of Wheat  (no sweetener, no cream)

Bought 3 hot breakfast cereals in tall cylinder containers, similar to the ones for Quakers Oats.

Oat Bran- Only one minute to cook.
Scottish oatmeal-  Need to simmer for 12 to 15 minutes but a small amount keeps me feeling full for a long time.
Cream of Wheat-  2 minutes simmer, then cover & let sit for 2 more minutes, to thicken.

I'm not doing well- horrible bgs even when I just have scrambled eggs and a veggie, 2 tbsp. oatmeal, plain- but today I have a doctor's app't. & will tell her I want a referral to an endo.

I know I'm not eating well but have started on exercise Tues. & Thurs with a group and hike a mountain for one hour on Thursdays.

Called several support groups and found only one is still in existence.  Once a month.  Not enough for me.  I asked at the senior center if we could start a group.  They said maybe; would I facilitate?

Thank you, all:  Nana, Marie, Newstart and ayn-o5 for showing an interest.  Made me feel good.

It's not unusual for doctors to believe they can handle diabetes cases.  I've run into this before. People tell me the only doctor they have is their family doctor. My last doctor (in a state where I lived before)was really annoyed, acted offended- he said his mother had an A1c higher than mine and felt it was in range.  I wasnt accepting of my A1c; I'd rather strive to do better.  he felt he was capable of handling my case.  I told him I wanted a team, all the help I can get.

Sometimes I wonder if it's a money matter.  If you dont use X amount of dollars, do they get a kickback?

I'm sitting here eating a breakfast of scrambled eggs cooked with a small amount of onions.  And coleslaw made with a no fat, 3 carbs, 3 sugars sour cream.  Looks good but the taste?

Finally!  I got it yesterday.  A referral to an endocrinologist.  Cant understand why this doctor objected last visit & this time- OK.  I came right out, very strong about wanting to see an endo.

The appoinment is just a week away because of my high BGs.

Left shoulder is still very painful.  She (the  doctor) recommended 200mg Ibuprofen - 2 tablets, 2 to 3x a day for  1 or 2  weeks (!) If that doesnt work, then physical therapy.  She thinks it may be a tendon or rotator cuff problem.

I am glad you have an app. so soon with an endo. One would think the doc's would appreciate someone who is willing to work hard at good control of their numbers...

Sorry your shoulder is still bothering. If your doc thinks it might be rotator cuff, etc. may I ask why she wants you to try the ibuprofen and such for so long?

Good luck at the endo app. I hope it is someone you will feel comfortable with and be able to trust.

Nana...
my doctor doesnt know for sure what causes  the shoulder pain.  She said to try the ibuprofen to see if it gives me relief.

She also referred me to an orthopedic doctor for X-rays & tests to see if it's frozen shoulder, rotator cuff, or tendonitis.

She also wrote up a prescription for physical therapy.  Now that's painful!  I had it once before.

I dont like taking drugs.  They just cover up symptoms.  But I'll still take the ibuprophen and see what happens.

Thanks for caring!

I hope the appointment on Wed. with the endo goes well for you. Were you able to stay away from the not so healthy foods at the party?
On DLIFE a week or so ago they said that frozen shoulder is a fairly common problem among diabetics, it is just a thought. How long before you see ortho?

No, didnt stay away from crackers & cheese, 2 small thin slices scake, 2 small meat sandwiches.  About 4 hours later bg was 302!

I've been running 220 -even my fasting blood sugar. I believe the Glucotrol kills beta cells.
Doctors deny this- they say studies arent conclusive.

But it increases the risk of premature deaths from cardiovascular death.  The same University Group Diabetes program said diabetes pills fail to prevent long term complications of diabetes- kidney disease, heart troubles and blindness.

I know I worry too much.
I'd just like to have some more close to normal readings again.

Marion;  Hope you come back to read the journals or at least check on yours.  Have you seen endo yet and if so what did the doc have to say?  Are you numbers any better? and the shoulder...did they figure out what was wrong?

NANA, that was so sweet and thoughtful of you to keep in touch, to be interested & concerned.  I was very adamant with my gerontologist about seeing an endocrinologist because once before she refused me.  She felt she could handle it, same as other PCPs I've had in the past.  I need a specialist to fine tune my care, I said & I was firm about getting one.

This time, she did refer me to a female endo at UVA.  I wasnt too impressed with her- she's OK with 10 yrs experience as a doctor.  Dont know how many years as an endo specifically. Both these doctors are married with children and only have office hours on Wednesdays; they are teaching professors at the University most of the time.  I wanted a prescription and that was  29 March when she wrote it.  I came back to get it re-written as my supply was low & they said "No! Only she can do that!  Only on Wednesdays!"
My Medicare Rxs (maintenance meds) have to go only  through Caremark & through the mail as specified by my past employer, AT&T, and she's not allowed to call the Rx in to them.  RULES.

The script has to be mailed.  If she did write me a script for an emergency supply, it could only be for 30 day,  it'd cost $99 for Glucophage Xr, I found out at CVS.  Metformin would be $20.  Cost prohibitive! So I called the NEXT Wednesday & got a Metformin Xr script for 90 day supply for $20.  After 11 days I got a phone call saying the date was written illegibly; it was being returned to me.  Here I am 26 days later & no returned script.  And no diabetic meds!  I have to watch my food so very, very carefully.  I feel like I'm Dr. Bernstein's twin.

I feel frustrated and scared about having high bgs.
Usually 140 to 160  before meals.  Rarely I'll get a 125 or 129.  Post prandial is sky high like 180-225-close to 300.

The shoulder...Spurs and bone wearing down from arthritis.  She suggested steroid shots (no thank you) and physical therapy.  I did that once before in Cary NC and I could do it here with a class at the senior center for free.  Twice a week exercise with this group gives me  less pain & more range in my shoulder.
THANKS FOR LISTENING!    (Reading)

Now tell me about you, Nana.

And now for some good news.  I was once diagnosed as early osteopenia and after 2 years of religiously taking 1200 mg. calcium daily, my bone density has improved considerably.

I read somewhere that the body can only assimilate 400mg calcium at a time so I cut the caplets and take them 4x daily with meals.

THANK YOU FOR LISTENING!

P.S.  I walk 30 min. a day now; even in the rain.  Just so long as there's no lightening/thunder.

Marion: You sure are right about the "rules" concerning the insurance companies. It is so frustrating much of the time. I hope you get the diabetic med fiasco cleared up soon.  Glad to hear you stood up for yourself in wanting and endo but sorry that she isn't the right one for you.
I too have osteopenia and they have me taking 1200 in calcium now but truthfully I only take 1/2 that. Gotta stretch the meds you know and I figure half is better than none.
Smart move on not taking the steriod shot in the shoulder. I had a quack doc years ago that was giving them to me on a regular basis and now they say that is why bones are so bad.  Have you access to a warm indoor swimming pool for exercise?
Must go for now. Aide will be here soon. Hang in there and good luck getting the meds you need.

Nana: About osteopenia and taking calcium tablets- it really works.  This year my bone density test showed much improvement.  I bought inexpensive Calcium with D at Sam's Club.

In my diet, I stay away from dairy products because I get aching arthritis if I indulge.  Think of the Orientals who don't eat cheese or dairy.  They substitute soy (tofu).  I'll bet they have less arthritic pain.

Yesterday -Wednesday- I called the endo's office again asking for my script to be re-written.  They said they'd mail it.  No, I told them, I'll pick it up in 1/2 hour. When I got there (long drive, wasted gas on several trips) I asked if I could have samples?  No, they dont have any metformin or glucophage in their supply cabinet.  At my PCP's I was told the drug salesmen dont leave older drug samples once a new drug comes on the market.  Drug pushers.  They push the latest drugs, which are pricey.

In the previous post I meant the drug salesmen are the drug pushers.

I am without meds now for almost 30 days!  In 2 weeks I should have the new Rx for Metformin via mail.  No alternative except get ANOTHER -30 day Rx- and pay thru the nose.

Today I'll have to wait until later to walk outdoors.  It was 39 degrees and we had frost last night.
I went out to walk at 60 degrees, late afternoon but it was windy and felt cold.Stir fry tofu with green bell peppers and onions for breakfast but I'm hungry soon after.  Time for my usual eggs.

Eggs and one Wasa cracker- 7 carbs.
