NANA, that was so sweet and thoughtful of you to keep in touch, to be interested & concerned. I was very adamant with my gerontologist about seeing an endocrinologist because once before she refused me. She felt she could handle it, same as other PCPs I've had in the past. I need a specialist to fine tune my care, I said & I was firm about getting one.
This time, she did refer me to a female endo at UVA. I wasnt too impressed with her- she's OK with 10 yrs experience as a doctor. Dont know how many years as an endo specifically. Both these doctors are married with children and only have office hours on Wednesdays; they are teaching professors at the University most of the time. I wanted a prescription and that was 29 March when she wrote it. I came back to get it re-written as my supply was low & they said "No! Only she can do that! Only on Wednesdays!"
My Medicare Rxs (maintenance meds) have to go only through Caremark & through the mail as specified by my past employer, AT&T, and she's not allowed to call the Rx in to them. RULES.
The script has to be mailed. If she did write me a script for an emergency supply, it could only be for 30 day, it'd cost $99 for Glucophage Xr, I found out at CVS. Metformin would be $20. Cost prohibitive! So I called the NEXT Wednesday & got a Metformin Xr script for 90 day supply for $20. After 11 days I got a phone call saying the date was written illegibly; it was being returned to me. Here I am 26 days later & no returned script. And no diabetic meds! I have to watch my food so very, very carefully. I feel like I'm Dr. Bernstein's twin.
I feel frustrated and scared about having high bgs.
Usually 140 to 160 before meals. Rarely I'll get a 125 or 129. Post prandial is sky high like 180-225-close to 300.
The shoulder...Spurs and bone wearing down from arthritis. She suggested steroid shots (no thank you) and physical therapy. I did that once before in Cary NC and I could do it here with a class at the senior center for free. Twice a week exercise with this group gives me less pain & more range in my shoulder.
THANKS FOR LISTENING! (Reading)
Now tell me about you, Nana.
And now for some good news. I was once diagnosed as early osteopenia and after 2 years of religiously taking 1200 mg. calcium daily, my bone density has improved considerably.
I read somewhere that the body can only assimilate 400mg calcium at a time so I cut the caplets and take them 4x daily with meals.
THANK YOU FOR LISTENING!
P.S. I walk 30 min. a day now; even in the rain. Just so long as there's no lightening/thunder.
