Hello All- I've been diabetic since I was 10 years old (14 years on Oct. 21, 2004 to be excact). My bg's have never been in good control and my Dr's told me I'd never be able to have children. However, in July of this year, I went to a specialist and he told me he thinks it would be possible if I got my bg's under control. I was overjoyed. I have always wanted to have children and with the doctors telling me I couldn't, I was devastated. This new doctor put a new hope and a new light into me when he told me this. The last A1C I had was about 7. ( It's not great, I know, but when I was younger and had them at 15, I've made a huge improvement.) Anyway, as soon as I heard that from him, my bg's dropped, I was low all of the time (maybe a mental thing, I don't know). Anyway, I went back to him and he told me my bg's were too low and changed my basal rate on my pump. Since that day, they have been a lot higher. I've changed them back to what they were, but it's still the same thing. I have been a little more stressed out lately- my husband works 2 full-time job and is gone 5 days and 5 nights a week and I work during the day. He used to only work 3 nights. Maybe the stress and upset over the change has had something to do with the bg's. I've been discouraged. I almost want to give up. I was doing so well, and now it's like, "whatever, I don't care." Anyway, to end my long sob story, I just wondered if there is any hope out there and if there is a chance to actually have a baby- how long was anyone else on pre-natal vitamins and how long were your bg's "tight" before they would let you start trying? Please help, I need to know there is some light at the end of the tunnel and some hope left. Thanks |

HI there. If you look at previous posts you'll see I just had my baby 3 months ago. I too have been a type 1 since I was 9 and I'm 28 now. I say you can definitely have a healthy baby. Here's what my specialist told me when I told her I was wanting to try and have a baby: Have tight control of my sugars and have an A1c of 6.5 or less for at least 6 months prior to trying. It is crucial to have your sugars in good control when conceiving because this is when many birth defects can happen. Of course have tight control during the entire pregnancy. I switched to the pump for this but it sounds like you are already on the pump and that is great. It does sound like stress is causing your sugars to rise. Mine went very high when I had to start going back to work after the baby but now they are back to normal again. I would say try to relax or adjust your basal rates accordingly. It may take a few changes to get them where you need them. I feel comfortable changing my own - not sure if you do. If you are concerned then call your doctor and tell them your situation and they can help you adjust them. Make sure you see and OB specialist as they are better informed with diabetes and pregnancy. I had to come in every 2 weeks and then weekly while pregnant and had to have the NST (heart monitoring) done on the baby twice a week once I hit 28 weeks. I was under good care. Well I'm sure I"ve babbled long enough here. If you want to email me feel free to. My home email is [email protected] (it's different than what I have posted here - can't seem to change it). Good luck! Michelle |

Hi Cheddarbug I just posted on the board about my story... My name is Kerry and I have only been a type 1 for 6 months know the only thing is that I am pregnant 11 weeks to be exact! The Dr's said the same thing to me when I told them I was thinking about getting pregnant, they told me that my BG levels should be under control at least 3 months before conceving! Well needless to say I got Pregnant within 1 month and they were not under control! I am seeing a specialist called a Perinatalogist and my Endo along with my OBGYN. Ya they are very concerned about the risks of birth defects and such but I have had 2 ultra sounds already and everything looks great heart is beating and baby is growing! Don't give up.... Don't let them scare you there is always a risk even if you are not diabetic it is better to have your BG levels under control yes but you just have to take care of yourself more when you are pregnant alot more! Sometimes I feel like I can't take it any more but than I think of the baby's health and I pull it together. My last A1C was 8.6 and they were freaking but remeber I was recentaly diagnosed I have to go again tomorrow to get it check again and I know it is alot lower than that. Just don't give up it will be okay and you are on the pump that is also a plus I am not! I take 4 shots a day and will go up alot with in the next 6 months. If you would like to eamil me I would love to talk to you. [email protected] if not good luck it will all work out! |

Hi Cheddarbug-- I know how you feel. (Does anyone else here have traumatic memories of Steel Magnolias? Negative images of diabetic motherhood have been burned on my brain since childhood due to that movie...written in the 50's, no less!) At any rate, I recently became pregnant and I'm so pleased with the care I am receiving. You need to find a good team of diabetes experts who will stop blaming you and begin helping you. Taking care of yourself first is the most important piece to the puzzle. Secondly, I was just wondering if you've ever considered adoption? It is always an option once you're under control if your medical team is concerned about the complications of childbirth. Good luck! I'm keeping my fingers crossed for all of us! |
