I am 31 weeks pregnant and measuring acouple of weeks further along already.  They say BIG baby boy!!  Which from what I understand it is common for pregnant woman with diabeties to have huge babies.  This is my 5th pregnancy but 2nd child.  My first son was a c-section.  This one is secheduled August 1st(if I make it that far).  I guess now that I gave you some of my history.  Now the big questions...  My blood sugars are all running high.  I just got instructed I have to cut my carbs once again.  I am so hungry!!!  My dietian says I am more sensitve to carbs than most.  Does anyone else in here have those problems????  and do you all think I will have him early cause I am so big plus measuring big??  any tips for food???  all input is appreciated.
Thanks

Christie

Christine , I 've heard that running high sugars when pregnant is so dangerous on the baby and you. I have heard once you cleanse your body of the carbs you will not crave them as much.Try drinking lots of ice water maybe with a little lemon squeezed in..the lemon has carbs too but just use a little.Filling your stomach with water will help make you feel full. I hope you are able to get those sugars down.

Hi Christie....
I'm Cheryl...been T1 for 33 yrs. and I have one daughter that is 33 yrs. old.  I was diagnosed when I was 6 mos. pregnant with her.  I was due to deliver her in January and in December they gave me a stress test to see how developed she was and to see how she would react to contractions/labor.  My ob/gyn was satisfied so they let me go into labor and I delivered her a month early.  She at that time weighed 6 lbs. 14 oz. and was healthy. If you will deliver him early is up to him....lol...only he has a schedule for that... but if you're planned for a section in Aug. your ob/gyn is probably satisfied with that. But hey, congrats on that big baby boy!  How long have you had diabetes and what meds are you on to control it?
Your system is under great stress right now.....and your hunger is right there on the list.  You're trying to balance two systems.
Carbs are not diabetic friendly to most diabetics.  They tend to elevate bloodsugar levels big time.
A good rule of thumb is that anything "white" is not good.  White bread, white sugar, white rice, white potatoes.....(I know, the good things) but things can be substituted to satisfy your system.  I don't eat potatoes; I eat brown rice; white sugar..no; and for my bread, I eat one from a health food store called, Ezekiel bread.  It is a flourless bread made from the sprouts of 6 grains...your system will digest it as a complete protein and it is very friendly with my bloodsugar levels.  It's more expensive than white breads...I'm in New Mexico, US and it runs about 4.00 for a 20 slice loaf but as a diabetic, I think it is money well spent.
I hope this helped in some way....
Are you a new member here?  I just joined in Jan. of this year so I don't know all the members that have been here awhile.  If you are new, I hope that you will stay around with us...this is a wonderful group that is very supportive and very caring and very helpful and willing to help.  You just have to post any questions, concerns or smiles and laughs... we talk about life, not just diabetes.  If you test your bloodsugars, you're welcome to post them on the type 2 board as we all (t1, t1.5 or t2) post our readings there as a general thing.  It's kind of like a check-in thing.
I guess I got a bit rambley here....hope I didn't bore you.
We just had a member that had a baby... a beautiful little girl, Mikalas75 (Michelle)...maybe she will pop in to give you some advice.  Anyway, Christie.... keep us updated on how you are doing.  See ya.  Peace,Cheryl
one other thing, when you post it is better if you use a 4 or 5 size black font as some of our members have difficulty reading smaller fonts....and we tell everybody this so don't feel awkward about it....it's a diabetes thing.  lol......see ya

Thank you for all your info.  My Dr. didnt schedule any stress test as of yet.  But I really havent seen her since I was diagnosed.  I was diagnosed at 28 weeks - right now I am 31 weeks.  So I am very new to all of this.  I tend to be more insulin resistance early in the morning and am very sensitive to carbs.  I have spent alot of $$ so far on all the different foods I am able to eat.  My goal is to get them b.s. down!!!  I dont see my OBGYN till the 20th so I will let you know how things are going after I see her and what her input is.  My dietion just keeps telling me I have to eat less and less.  I guess I was spoiled with my first son.  I was able to eat whatever whenever....
I just hope he is a healthy boy as well as being big

Christie,
If your bloodsugars are high that could be the reason for your thirst.  There is nothing like a diabetic thirst...nothing ever quenches it.  Before I was diagnosed, I was drinking two gallons a day and was up most of the night getting rid of it....lol....
I checked the nutritional values of Crystal Light and it looked fairly safe...no carbs.  I don't have any experience with drinks like that as I have become a water drinker.  I use to drink diet soda like there was no tomorrow....no more...
Are you on insulin?  Does diabetes run in your family?  It does in mine.  I was so hoping that after my daughter was born that it would Poof! disappear but no such luck with me but I think that is because it is in my family.
And yes, please let us all know how you come out on the 20th and like I said (or at least I think I mentioned it up above) feel free to join us on the other boards...you don't have to only post on this one.  Post anywhere you want....lol....I'll talk to you later.  Peace,Cheryl

Christie~~
Welcome!  Please make yourself at home here, and enjoy!
The greatest risk to a developing fetus is ketones.  And ketones follow high sugars.  Do you have a way of checking for ketones when your sugars are high?  Of course you are experiencing hunger...they say you are eating for two!  But you need to keep your choices healthy for both you and your baby.  And while your doctor has probably told you this, any extra weight you gain will just be a fight to lose once you give birth.  Try to keep that in mind as those cravings hit.  Crystal Light is water plus...so you are staying hydrated, but...is all that artificial sweetenr really that good for a developing baby?  Please check with your OB on that one, OK?
And yes...while healthy eating habits and practices will benefit any child, it is not a lead pipe cinch that your child will be diabetic.  And with any luck, this disease will be cured before he has to worry about such things.
Praying for you and your healthy baby to be!  HUGS!  sheryl

Hi Christie, it's Michelle who just gave birth to Allie 3 months ago.  Well it's important to be seeing a specialist or your current doctor often.  I went every other week and had NST (stress tests) done twice a week while pregnant.  You want to make sure the baby isn't getting too big and most importantly that your sugars are under tight control.  Your goal is under 90 fasting in the morning and under 140 post meals (I tested 2 hours after meals).  I know it's hard and it constantly fluctuates especially the further you go along but you have to keep trying.  My guess is you will need insulin and probably more of it the further you get. I  too had lots of resistance in the morning.  I'm not sure what your diet is consisting of but milk is usually a culprit of spiking sugars in the morning so eliminate that if you drink it.  I like the sugar & carb control yogurts by Danon. They only have 3 grams of carbs in it.  I also bought low carb bread.  Watermelon never got my sugar high but each person reacts differently so it's hard to tell what will work for you. Bananas are super high in sugar so stay away from that. I  guess what you need to do is eat more portions of protein and smaller portions of carbs.  I know it's hard and can get quite boring but for the time being it's just something you need to do. So eat more lean meats and cheese and nuts.  For me potatoes always got my sugars high while pregnant but I could eat rice and pasta and I was fine.  Make sure you eat throughout the day...3 meals and 3 snacks if you can.  Maybe we can help more if you give a breakdown of what you eat now and maybe some of use can help you better once we have that information.  bottom line is to check your sugars often -  preferably before and after each meal and before bed.  And drink water.  It's very important.  Hope this helps.

Michelle

My appt went okay.. My Dr. really seemed okay with my b.s.  I am 32 weeks now so 6 more weeks left before my c-section.  The baby is measuring right on, I have lost some weight.  I say it is because I am only allowed 3 carbs per meal and 1 carb for snacks.  I am just being healthier all around.  I am also on glyburide now, 2.5 mg..  Per the blood sugars still being slightly elevated.  If you want to know anything else please let me know
