Hi everyone, I am a type one diabetic and i am 40. I have had 2 miscarriages last one in December. I was told it was due to my high sugars and of course age. Everyone keeps telling me it would be a miracle  if Iwas able to conceive and carry a baby at this stage of the game. I want to fight though i relly wnt this. I am taking such good care of my sugars and taking prenatal vitamins and eating right. I just need some hope and advice from  anyone who is in my situation or knows someone is. Thank you and I hope to hear from someone soon.

Best thing to do would be to look into an insulin pump if you haven't already done so.  And once you have done that I would suggest keeping in very close touch with your diabetic nurse educator...and hopefully that person will have a close working relationship with your ob gyn doctor!

I cannot speak for the age factor as I had my daughter at age 23.  But I can tell you that with type one I had high sugars with the beginning of each trimester.  My endocrinologist at the time told me it had to do with the changes in hormones that occur at the beginning of each trimester. I would have been thrilled to have had a pump at that time!

I wish you luck...and I would be interested to hear how you are doing!!!

Hi Johnna ~ I am almost 40 but type 2.  And also feel my clock ticking but I am fighting it.  I am currently working very hard to loose weight and keep great control over my levels.  We haven't started trying to consieve but I am almost ready.  I believe in miracles!!!!  And I know it can happen for us.  I don't know much about the pump but for type 1 I hear it is the best thing to do.  You should talk to your doc about one.  My last A1c was 6.0 so I am on the right track.  And I have recently lost 25 lbs.  I'm not giving up and neither should you!!!!!  I don't have any experience to speak of I just wanted to pass along positive thoughts and prayers to you.  I wish you the best and hopefully we can be role models someday for someone else who is wanting to concieve at 40.  Best of luck to you and hopefully I will see you around again soon!!!  susan

I decided to join this board after I read your post, I usually just lurk here.  I've been type 1 for 41 years, I got my first pump 22 years ago when I became pg with our first daughter, I was 33.  We had our 2nd DD when I was 36.  Both pregnancies were pretty normal, lots of testing and 10 times the normal amount of insulin, but the pump makes all that so much easier to manage, both girls were born by natural childbirth and best of all healthy.  I have always had a Minimed, just got a new one in Aug.  I hope you can get one, it will make a huge difference in your A1C's and you really need to get yours down, my last was 5.9.  My dr even wanted me to have a good A1C several months prior to getting pg.  I wish you all the best.  Deidre
