I must be driving everyone nuts by asking too many question lately, but oh well.  My question is, now that I'm on the pump, using Humalog, do I still need to give my bolus 15 minutes before I eat or can I give it, while I'm starting to eat?

I would say, everyone is really different on that issue.  Some give split doses, before and after a meal (and I think I have heard of people doing this who have gastroparesis).  Some give before, some after or even during.
I for one, never know exactly how much I am going to eat.  If I gave a full dose, I might not eat the right amount of food.
I would say you need to work it out and see how things go along.  You've still got to do a two or three hour check to see where you stand after the bolus.

If you gave it 15 minutes before on injections, keep doing this with pump.

There is no such thing as a dumb question...except the on you DON'T ask!  And you can never ask too many questions.  If you are concerned about something, by all means ASK!  OK?
As for the pump, not an expert on that one for sure.  But I do use humalog.  It works pretty darned quick.  So unless you know for sure how much you are going to eat, I would wait on the shot until you sit at the table (or very close to it).  I've made the mistake of taking a shot too long before a meal, gotten delayed for one silly reason or other, and wound up in a big mess of hypo.  I'm guessing that humalog is humalog, and will work just as fast or faster frim a pump.  So I think you should inject your bolus just prior to eating.  Or even shortly afterward.  Just my opinion, and what works for me with the needles.  HUGS!  sheryl

I agree with Person.  If 15 minutes before worked with shots, it will work the same way with the pump.  I always tried to give my bolus 15-20 minutes ahead of eating if I knew for sure what I would be eating and that it would be on time.  That schedule seemed to match most closely the action of the food I was eating.  The only exception is if your food is high fiber or high fat, it may affect your blood sugar more slowly and you might want to delay your bolus until your first bite for those meals.

Now I take Symlin, which totally changes the timing of my insulin.  So my advice above was for a person NOT taking Symlin or Byetta.

Another thought--take a look in Pumping Insulin, or one of the other books out there and see what they say.
Which reminds me, Pumping Insulin was supposed to release a new edition around last year.  I wonder if they ever did?

Yes, they did Gelsey.  I haven't seen it but I hear it is a good update.
