Hello - I'm back with another question.  Don't run, it's only a question...............

How do you remove the infusion set without screaming bloody murder and a baby whinning it hurts.  I understand it must me a male thing, cause males tend to whine if something hurts.

I needed to remove and change my set at work today.  The pump had an alarm no delievery and to change the set.  I had checked everything, before changing.  I had no insulin coming out of the cabling.  So I thought the best way to do it was to replace it.

I have been experiencing when removing, I have hard time in removing it off the skin that is on there and taking it off hurts.  At work, in removing it behind curtain where it's reserved for me to do what I need to do.  I was a dork and didn't close the door and while taking it off, I must have been whinning and complaining that it hurt while going inch by inch in taking it off.

One of the nurses came in and asked if the patient was ok and I said it was me.  She had asked me what I was doing and I told her I'm removing the infusion set and she said your worse than my husband.  She had said just rip of it.  Well she did somewhat just that, and I pretty much attracted nurses and a few doctors.  Walked out and they just laughed, now I"m being mocked around the floor.

Due to I work with kids, one kid asked me so the doctor got you too by that needle too, hurts doesn't it.

My guess my question is, how do you remove it so it doesn't hurt.  What is a good way of doing it.  I can take baths and get it wet and it won't come off.  I take a bath at night and in the morning, so it goes through about 4-5 baths and still sticking as to when I placed it on.  In which I had thought in taking a bath it would do arm and it would fall off like a bandaid.

Just wondering.

Pretty much grab it and rip it off.
But usually the edges on mine are prying up anyway, so there isnt as much to tug on.
Make sure you are not having any sensitivity problems with the tape etc.
I used to, way back when I first went on the pump.  I started using that IV3000 stuff, which is like second skin.  You can put your set right through it.  You might want to try that.

There are medical adhesive removers like Detachol, Bond-Off, Uni-Solve and others. You can saturate the tape, let it work, then dribble it between the set and your skin while peeling it off. Rubbing alcohol and nail polish remover are two others that some use as adhesive removers.
I don't use them. They take too long for me. I just let-er-rip too (ouch!)

Seriously, get a little edge up with your fingernail and then rip the sucker out FAST like removing a Band-Aid.  I used to do the slow, inch-by-inch removal in the beginning and it does hurt to do it that way, but just ripping it right off doesn't hurt at all.

For me, it just hurts too much to just rip it off.  I used to use an alcohol swab to saturate it, then slowly peel it off.  Now I use sweet almond oil.  I dab some on my finger and rub it into the white outer part.  Then, slowly, it just peels away without pain.  And my skin is moisturized too.

Take care
Chris

Hi there.  Of course I typed in a reply and the "website wasn't working."  So here I go again.  I don't know how everyone else does this but I always change my site in the morning when I take a shower so it's wet and easier to take off - like a band aid.  I think I've only taken out when not in the shower a couple times when something happened and it needed to come out. I just know that on the 4th day it's time to change and do it in the shower.  Seems to not hurt as much.  All the other tips were good too.  You can try baby oil to help remove the glue and not be so sticky.  A nurse gave me that tip.  I know I use it for removing the ring of glue sometimes left behind and it wipes off real easy.  It's probably a bit more painful for men since you have more hair!  HOpe you find something that works for you.

I need to find a way of taking care of it.  I have to change my sites every 2 days.  I have the 300ml and my insulin lasts for 2 days in the reservor.  I had tired filling it up with more insulin and tried an extra day, but the site gets sore on the third day.  So I'm just staying at changing every two days.

I was thinking, I think it would be nice for the non-pumpers to see the whole transitions from start to finish of prepping the infusion set, the resevior, insertation.  I know, for me when doing the studing and even thinking of going on the pump, I was looking for movies of people prepping themselves for the infusion.

Just a though

Went to work for my 12 hour shift - they had a teddy bear that we use for children who are undergoing surgery with a bandaid on it to show where their surgery will be.  They are able to keep the bear after surgery.  Well, came to work and on the nurses desk, they had a bear, with an infusion set, connected to a block of wood that looked just like my pump.  Was told the idea came from one of the kids that had over heard the commotion when I had the infusion set removed.  The doctors & nurses had signed a card with their names.  The card was created by the kid who suggested it - he said, he feels better after a laugh of me scretching after one of my co-workers, greatfully removed the infusion set, and called me a wussy.  Well, taht men are wussys for pain.  You know, that same story that women can stand pain of birth and men can't.

I'm glad I had made the kids day - he's been dealing with cancer for along time, and has been in and out of our department.

They did have a clip of someone using an infusion set, I think it's on the Insulin-pumpers site or it's on the old Diabetes Mall (now Diabetesnet.com)

Hello

i dont use the pump...yet! but i was thinking, as the majority of pain comes from the hairs being pulled, how about waxing the area?
