Just want to get some backup to show my doc who doesn't believe coffee (more specifically caffeine) can raise blood sugar. My sugar can increase as much as 8 mmol/L with 3 mugs (black), though I usually use a SMALL amount of skim milk...Canadian Diabetes Association has info on their website that "caffeine has been shown to raise blood sugar" http://www.diabetes.ca/section_about/caffeine.asp I'd like to hear any comments about individual results with coffee...Thanks. |

My morning coffee does rise my sugars...but I think it's the cream and so does my Dr. I will test it after drinking black coffee and see it still raises my sugars. Maryb |

This has been debated on places like the Insulin Pumpers list forever. For some yes, for some no. Depends on the cream, and also often is that thing they call feet on the floor--your Bg can rise first thing in the morning when your feet hit the floor. For myself, it doesnt do anything to me at all and I consider it one of the best treats I can get. And now I have Starbucks making me a pretty darn good cup ofg iced coffee....... |

Hi Mark, I usually have a large double cream with Splenda every morning (Timmys') and I always have to bolus for 20 carb. I was told years ago by my doctor that the combo of fat (cream) and caffiene put like a protective barrier, if you will, on your cells, making it harder, therefore longer, for the insulin to get in. That's the way he explained it to me in laymans terms. Hope this helps Take care Chris |

Hey guys, check this link for explanation on why coffee's caffeine raises blood sugar levels. I've tried the drinkin coffee black test, and my sugar still goes way up after two mugs of instant coffee. Not the milk or cream. My sugar can go up as much as 8 mmol/L from 3 mugs. |
