I started reading before I went to school    my father used to read me the comics every Sunday    I loved Dick Tracy and Little Orphan Annie    one Sunday he was taking too long to get to it and I started  myself       I know this because my grandmother told this story many times    I always  "had my nose stuck in a book"     many times I did not have to do work around the house because I was reading     my grandmother and father thought reading was very important     when my babies were having the 2am feeding  a book was always there     when I took the children to the playground I had a book       1 of the episodes I remember from Rod Serling    Twilight Zone tv program    was the one where a man who loved to read was in a world where he was the only person   he went into a library and he was so happy   he had millions of books to read  ----then his glasses got broken     I thought that was the saddest thing

I taught myself to read before I started school by reading billboards.  I would ask someone in my family what the billboard said and before long I could read.  I was extremely shy, so my teachers had no idea that I could read when I started school.  They put me in the slowest reading group.  When it came time to ask us to read a page each of Dick and Jane, I could read the whole book.  Then I got moved up from the Bluebirds to the Yankees, skipping the Roses.

in high school     I could not wait until we got the new English and American Literature books       I would read all the stories  as soon as I got it    and soon after did not have to take it home each day to do homework      one of the stories from english classes I still remember is To Make A Fire

I'll look for that story, Tabby.  Who was the author?  I love short stories.  I am in 3 book clubs and one of them is a short story book club - we read 3 short stories a month and discuss them.  A good author can pack a whole lot into just a few pages.

Thanks, Tabby!

THAT'S IT     thanks Julie     I am going to read it again       that book had a collection of short stories and I remember all being good      but that is the only one I remember the title--the story was 1 that stays with you    I think another was about a man who collected snakes when he was young and he grew up to be a famous zooaligist[sp]another was about a cat on board a ship who fought a black mamba          for those wondering I was not around in 1908 [smile]

Tabby, I did try to find the other two stories but I couldn't find ones that fit your description.  I haven't read the Jack London story yet.  I know I will enjoy it.  You have a wonderful memory.  Those stories left a lasting impression on you!
